Erase Errata might be a little more abrasive than these (just the way I like it), but At Crystal Palace is some of the catchiest stuff ever ("Ca. Viewing", "Ease on Over"). There's plenty of great poppy girl post-punk (see: Kleenex/Liliput, Delta 5, Slits, Mo-Dettes, Raincoats). Afrirampo's self-titled (5 song) EP is also highly recommended.Neon wrote:All-or-mostly-girl-pop-bands-that-of-course-are-not-as-good-as-Shonen-Knife-but-are-still-good:
Just got an iaudio x5 mp3 player today. So far amazing, FLAC Obscura yeah. MP3s are unacceptable.

I got King Crimson's The Great Deceiver and it is awesome. It sounded especially good this cold morning.
And how about:
Neil Young - Everybody Knows this is Nowhere
Yowie - Cryptooology - Downloaded (again) finally, to listen to the album I bought that came out the package unplayable (:x). Phenomenal album, insane.

Crap, I've really been wanting this one and have been thinking about ordering it, actually, and now I'm afraid to do so. Could be a whole batch of bad discs out there.Rob wrote: Yowie - Cryptooology - Downloaded (again) finally, to listen to the album I bought that came out the package unplayable (:x). enemymine - s/t ep
oneida (passim)
great unraveling - s/t
dillinger escape plan - calculating infinity
bjork - vespertine
ativin - pills vs planes
all natural lemon and lime - straight blue line

I was gonna wait to respond till I had heard everything, but Erase, mo-dette, and Afrirampo are the shit. Went ahead and ordered Yowie. What the hell.
Tonight's favorite:
unwound - the future of what
I decided on a Creative Zen Vision: M. It's compatible with Napster to Go (unlimited downloads to your MP3 player for $15 a month). Right now I'd rather have my Napster to Go than my tv cable service. TV mostly sucks. As for the Vision: M, I have had some minor problems already, but overall I'm pretty happy.Rob wrote:Just got an iaudio x5 mp3 player today. So far amazing, FLAC Obscura yeah. MP3s are unacceptable.

I've downloaded this album but do plan on buying it:
Blue Man Group - The Complex
I love weirdo/experimental music and fell in love with the group as soon as I heard Piano Smasher at the end of R-Type Final. (I don't care if the song is inapporiate! You japanophiles can bugger off)

I love Necrotism, Carcass at their peak by far. The lyrics are sick though.
Meshuggah's I is just 21 mins of pure metal to the face. I love the time signature of the first chugging section, quite disorientating. Can't ever put my finger on it exactly, anyone know the notation for it?
As for the Vision M, it's what i have and i've very pleased with it. Shit load of MP3s plus South Park makes Stu a happy man.
Been checking out:
Low vs Diamond - New double 7" EP
Joan Baez - Diamonds and Rust (such a beautiful voice, must check out her early folky stuff)
Neil Young - Lots and lots of earlyish bootlegs and live shows. There is a cracking version of Mellow My Mind on one of them played on a banjo-tar which really hits the spot.
The Fall - Reformation Post TLC (Das Boat anyone?)
Some Webbed Hand netlabel stuff - check it out for chilled electronica
Art For Spastics V121 (check out this mp3 blog for quality underground punk/metal/experimental)
Bert Jansch - Black Swan
John Coltrane - Live Trane: The European Tours (Bliss but heavy going)
Number of 1cc's : 5

OK, I had to expand on my Indie list above, as it just seemed silly without so many of my favorite bands on it. So here's a slightly improved one, though the order is a bit random, really.
Indie
1. unwound - leaves turn inside you
2. arab on radar - yahweh or the highway
3. drive like jehu - yank crime
4. unwound - new plastic ideas
5. polvo - today's active lifestyles
6. six finger satellite - law of ruins
7. oneida - secret wars
8. a minor forest - flemish altruism
9. slint - spiderland
10. don caballero - don caballero 2
11. faraquet - view from this tower
12. deerhoof - reveille
13. polvo - cor-crane secret
14. shellac - at action park
15. natural dreamers - s/t
16. lync - these are not fall colors
17. rodan - rusty
18. modest mouse - building nothing out of something
19. hella - the devil isn't red
20. fire show - above the volcano of flowers
EDIT: I wouldn't have known about this music without Rob's patient help, so it's with hesitation that I present this as my list.

Six Finger Satellite's lack of popularity is inexplicable. Severe Exposure is like a 90s Fun House, Law of Ruins is all on its own.
Today:
White Heaven - Out -- CMoon was right, when I thought I had enough Japanese psych
Fushitsusha - Gold Blood
The Birthday Party - Live 1981-82
Boredoms - Soul Discharge
Mercyful Fate - Don't Break the Oath

Thanks doc, I'm trying to check out more indie stuff myself, your list will help tremendously. Especially modern, it seems like all my favorite music was made during or before 1995
Current favourites
Neutral Milk Hotel - in the Aeroplane over the Sea
Iggy Pop and the Stooges - Raw Power
Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks
Pixies - Surfer Rosa & Doolittle
Disrupt - Unrest (very heavy stuff)
Daniel Johnston - 1990 (my favourite of his)
Sonic Youth - Murray St.
Does anyone member when the new Dino Jr. and Pixies get released

I was listening to the new Converge album and thought to myself "Jacob Bannon sounds a lot like the guy from Only Living Witness'> Then I looked in the liner notes and it actually is the guy from Only Living Witness. Made me bust out this CD again. Great album.

Oh jesus, I leave for a week and we're up to like 32 pages now or something?
Just picked up Windir's Arntor. Again, it doesn't seem like anyone has heard this stuff (not that it's particularly obscure, but just out of print.) Good, fast, heavily melodic black metal that insists on head banging for its full length. No real trudging around or the normal black metal antics. Honestly, short of the vocals and minor chords used, its almost power metal (short of the power ballads of course hehe)
Rob> Glad you are digging White Heaven, that one in paricular is among the best post le ralizes denudes albums I can think of. I hope you also end up enjoying Gold Blood, that album to me is almost like some kind 'black classical' (heh, if you can have black metal). It is some kind of fucked up chamber music (although Fushisusha has always been doing that.)
Also weird you metnioed Don't break the oath--I was just dubbing that off for a friend.
The Great Deceiver set--oh shit, yes, I've had that going a bit as well. Finally put it on my Ipod. Some of the sets are killer.
Did someone mention Neil Young--I still can't get over the holy trinity of Tonight's the night, on the beach and Zuma. I think (from what I've heard), I still need to get the whole 'arc/weld' thing (for some reason, it is always too expensive!)
Has anyone heard of a heavy metal band called 'Wolf'? I just heard a track by them and they seem to be TRUE heavy metal, right out of the 80's. It is surprising how refreshing that can be sometimes.
Anyway, I have a huge pile of free improv and japanese noise to get through now, so I'll report back later...
Edit: Prof. G> Glad to see someone else giving props to Bach. I love classical, but I could piss it all away just for Bach alone. Before you blow thousands of dollars on Bach (and that is easily possible) I suggest looking into one of the complete sets (there is a polish knock-off of the hanssler edition that can often be found on ebay for around $300-$500, which is a very good deal (that's 172 CDs btw, all good performances, none of this 'nobody orchestra' bullshit.) There are also lots of smaller sets that will help you save some cash if you aren't into going that route. A lot of them out on Archiv and DG come to mine (I actually have one of his masses I could part with if you are interested.
The thing with Bach is that once you are in the door, there is no real end to it. He is so consistantly brillant that you are stuck with an all or nothing proposition, and 'all' means hundreds of hours of music. *sighs*

Eugenics: you know it's right!
Double post for the Bach lovers:
Mass in B minor
Well-tuned piano (all three books)
complete organ works (who can choose?)
Art of fugue
Musical offering
6 cello suites
the violin sonatas (IE BWV 1014-1024 or something like that)
The goldberg variations
and of course, the sonatas and partitas for solo violin (bwv 1001-1006)
The fact that these alone would span over 20 cds, and yet only scratch the very surface of Bach's catalog illustrates the point I'm trying to make regarding Bach. Namely he didn't just produce quality but he did so in massive quantity. It is enough to keep any serious listener busy for a VERY long time.

Maybe you've just put this thought in my head, but I swear it crossed my mind. It seemed great and enrapturing on first listen, much fuller than the thin, tinny Pathétique (only other I've heard, for some reason the most popular one at rym).CMoon wrote: Gold Blood, that album to me is almost like some kind 'black classical'
I've just stuck to the first two discs so far, disc 1 is the clear winner. I probably shouldn't have read the book, since it's disappointing what didn't get included (if the impressions of one person are anything to go by). Disc 1 = good. Disc 2 = comatose. Not included, any show described as top form, the last show with Cross. The Great Deceiver set--oh shit, yes, I've had that going a bit as well. Finally put it on my Ipod. Some of the sets are killer.
We're all having a Neil Young listening party at the moment. I also have Rust Never Sleeps enqueued in Netflix to keep it going.Did someone mention Neil Young--
(Anyone: any great music DVDs to recommend? I'm loading up on anything that looks interesting.)
Yeah, they're quite good (I can listen to them while not liking Iron Maiden, so they're doing something right). Evil Star is my favorite.Has anyone heard of a heavy metal band called 'Wolf'? I think I was at least partially influenced to dig out Wire and the Melvins by recent-ish discussions in this thread. Thanks, gents...

AWESOME list-- pretty much my favorites right there. I also like the occasional cantata. Bach is pretty well in his own league imo.CMoon wrote:Double post for the Bach lovers:

CMoon, if I have your attention: Wtf is up with Providence? It seems like you guys have had more than your fair share of good bands over the years. Is the music scene pretty interesting now, as far as you know it?
