Erase Errata might be a little more abrasive than these (just the way I like it), but At Crystal Palace is some of the catchiest stuff ever ("Ca. Viewing", "Ease on Over"). There's plenty of great poppy girl post-punk (see: Kleenex/Liliput, Delta 5, Slits, Mo-Dettes, Raincoats). Afrirampo's self-titled (5 song) EP is also highly recommended.

Just got an iaudio x5 mp3 player today. So far amazing, FLAC Obscura yeah. MP3s are unacceptable.

I decided on a Creative Zen Vision: M. It's compatible with Napster to Go (unlimited downloads to your MP3 player for $15 a month). Right now I'd rather have my Napster to Go than my tv cable service. TV mostly sucks. As for the Vision: M, I have had some minor problems already, but overall I'm pretty happy.

I love Necrotism, Carcass at their peak by far. The lyrics are sick though.

Meshuggah's I is just 21 mins of pure metal to the face. I love the time signature of the first chugging section, quite disorientating. Can't ever put my finger on it exactly, anyone know the notation for it?

As for the Vision M, it's what i have and i've very pleased with it. Shit load of MP3s plus South Park makes Stu a happy man.

I was listening to the new Converge album and thought to myself "Jacob Bannon sounds a lot like the guy from Only Living Witness'> Then I looked in the liner notes and it actually is the guy from Only Living Witness. Made me bust out this CD again. Great album.

Just picked up Windir's Arntor. Again, it doesn't seem like anyone has heard this stuff (not that it's particularly obscure, but just out of print.) Good, fast, heavily melodic black metal that insists on head banging for its full length. No real trudging around or the normal black metal antics. Honestly, short of the vocals and minor chords used, its almost power metal (short of the power ballads of course hehe)

Has anyone heard of a heavy metal band called 'Wolf'? I just heard a track by them and they seem to be TRUE heavy metal, right out of the 80's. It is surprising how refreshing that can be sometimes.

Anyway, I have a huge pile of free improv and japanese noise to get through now, so I'll report back later...

Edit: Prof. G> Glad to see someone else giving props to Bach. I love classical, but I could piss it all away just for Bach alone. Before you blow thousands of dollars on Bach (and that is easily possible) I suggest looking into one of the complete sets (there is a polish knock-off of the hanssler edition that can often be found on ebay for around $300-$500, which is a very good deal (that's 172 CDs btw, all good performances, none of this 'nobody orchestra' bullshit.) There are also lots of smaller sets that will help you save some cash if you aren't into going that route. A lot of them out on Archiv and DG come to mine (I actually have one of his masses I could part with if you are interested.

The thing with Bach is that once you are in the door, there is no real end to it. He is so consistantly brillant that you are stuck with an all or nothing proposition, and 'all' means hundreds of hours of music. *sighs*

The fact that these alone would span over 20 cds, and yet only scratch the very surface of Bach's catalog illustrates the point I'm trying to make regarding Bach. Namely he didn't just produce quality but he did so in massive quantity. It is enough to keep any serious listener busy for a VERY long time.

Maybe you've just put this thought in my head, but I swear it crossed my mind. It seemed great and enrapturing on first listen, much fuller than the thin, tinny Pathétique (only other I've heard, for some reason the most popular one at rym).

I've just stuck to the first two discs so far, disc 1 is the clear winner. I probably shouldn't have read the book, since it's disappointing what didn't get included (if the impressions of one person are anything to go by). Disc 1 = good. Disc 2 = comatose. Not included, any show described as top form, the last show with Cross.

Did someone mention Neil Young--

We're all having a Neil Young listening party at the moment. I also have Rust Never Sleeps enqueued in Netflix to keep it going.

AWESOME list-- pretty much my favorites right there. I also like the occasional cantata. Bach is pretty well in his own league imo.

CMoon, if I have your attention: Wtf is up with Providence? It seems like you guys have had more than your fair share of good bands over the years. Is the music scene pretty interesting now, as far as you know it?
