Most dramatic explosions

Oh yeah...Layer Section has some nice boss explosions...one that falls into the canyon below is pretty cool as someone mentioned (something similar) earlier in this thread.

Zanac on the NES had some pretty subdued, but highly effective flash-type explosions when you took out a massive enemy base. I was always impressed by that, particularly when you really struggled to clear a level.

The final shot, a quick white flash, and then the imploded remains of the base were all that's left followed by the happy "stage clear" tune. Great stuff back in the day.

Agreed! Although oldskool, Stargate smart bombs where every pixel on screen explodes into a rainbow of fireworks still makes me giddy.
Even to this day, when the screen is full of enemies, I always blink at the most intense moment, immediately after a smart bomb... starring at the Sun would be less intense! :P
