G-Darius simply incredible

Post by Diabollokus »

Played this today via taito legends 2.

Never been more impressed by a 32 bit shmup, I might actually enjoy this game more than silvergun or border down. Just when I'd started to lose shmup interest this comes along and puts me back on track. 10/10

This game needs more love!

Exactly my impression when I first played this game (but I do think BD is better now however). It's like a less complex BD with Darius atmosphere, lots of cool gameplay ideas, amazing bosses and a solid scoring system that blends very well with the classic Darius style of play. I wish I could play it now, but my cabinet isn't functioning at the moment...

I played it this morning up to second stage and saw I think Giant emperor/queen/fossil boss my jaw dropped when it bit into the ship at the start of the fight then moved in and out of the screen not to mention the music...Border down yeah, presentation wise superior and I love it but dam big mechanical fish are hard to beat.

Yeah, G-Darius is astounding thanks to the awesome music/bosses/atmosphere. The score system is pretty messed up and requires patience to appreciate, but then again score systems and gameplay arnt what Darius games are all about.

To compare it even better with borderdown, why not play it in your Dreamcast? It plays a bit choppy and is not recommended for serious play, but the graphics get cleaned up a bit and it looks a bit smoother.

Nothin' but love for this game. 'So overdramatic for fighting fish. I like the long fights, as the patterns are mostly different through the whole fight. 2 straight hours of them tests the patience though. Thank god the real game only hits you with 5. One of the better soundtracks, but that's not sayin' a lot for this genre.

Yeah, G-Darius is great. I would agree that it's only major drawback is that the bosses take a really long time to defeat, & some of them are prohbitively difficult. Otherwise, it's an awesome game.

are the ps2 and ps1 versions the same?
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Yup. A major two thumbs up for G-Darius. It was, is and always be the best horizontal shmup for the PSone; at least in my opinion. The number of different levels to choose from is more than enough replayability. Much luv for this gem. Taito in it's finest hour.

Why contrast it with border down? These are complementary games, and in my mind two of the best side scrolling shooters ever (oh, I'm sorry, am I supposed to say 'the side scrolling shooter ever'?? you silly kids!)

Can't imagine liking one and not the other.

Those who have the taito legends 2 version and the psx version, do you strongly prefer one to the other?

The PSX version can run at a slow frame rate at times if you ask me. Is the PS2 version the same? Still a great game though.

fired this up in my cab yesterday and got stuck untill the wee hours.. fantastic game indeed, i just love the laser-counter system in this.
graphics are amazing, altho a little too amazing, once you get to the two last stages its kinda hard to see what the hell is going on, theres laser coloured shit flying around absoluteley everywhere.

that and i really need an autofire circuit for my cab :x

damn i wish they had made R-type Delta for the arcade :(

The PS2 version runs much faster. Might even be too fast really. Makes the game much more difficult.

I like Border down but quite dislike G-darius. G-darius looks like ass and I hate the enemy-capture system.

It's about time this game gets some recognition. It's a few hundred years too late though, isn't it?
Maybe the game was just too much when it came out.

I find myself running the between-stages music in my head at least once a day. Superb.

Anyway, gobsmacking game!

oh for fucks sake this is hardly a "hidden gem" theres plenty of appreciation around.. its one of those games that pop up on topic about once or twice a year.

I for one actually bought it on release way back and have been enjoying it to and fro ever since..

gobsmacking = baffling, amazing, over-the-top-great....

Did I sound upset? Was just meaning to point it out.
Shite was the word used when I tried to start a topic on this, in the old network54 forum, when the game came out.

Use your capture ball to grab a smaller enemy craft. Hang around the boss just dodging for a little while, and wait for them to power up their big laser.

Absorb your captured enemy, and release your laser. Battle the boss' laser (button mash like crazy), and you'll be rewarded with an even bigger laser if you win. I believe this can be repeated more that once on later bosses.

Anyways, use that approach and bosses are made short work of.

I love G-Darius. It's probably one of maybe 3 all-3D shooters I really enjoy. Typical Tatio musical brilliance to go with the fun game too. I picked it up on PSX quite some years ago for $10 out of the bargain bin, and it remains my best cheapy score to date. My only complaint is I find it a tad easy, but that hasn't ever stopped me not picking it up every few months and giving it a run through.

Yeah the PS2 taito legends 2 version runs very well, no slowdown, pretty hard as mentioned though near the end stages. Unfortunately its too easy to credit feed on this version.

I like the capture system, started to do the laser reflections on bosses now kills em much quicker.

This is a problem with the player, not with the game or the version. ;)

If you're referring to how the game looks, G.Rev already topped themselves:

Yeah, G.Darius is fun. Scale and believability of the boss fights were good.

Every now and then I play my copy through ePSXe. It allows you to play original PSX discs on your PC, and bump everything up to high res with nice texture filtering.

G-Darius at 1024x768 and full anti-aliasing/anisotropic filtering on my 21" SVGA monitor looks damned sexy. :)

It's a cheap thrill, but I get a kick out of playing all my old 3D PSX titles through hardware emulators that allow nice hi-res modes. Doesn't change the gameplay of course, but it's still a laugh.

There's no need for button mashing. All you have to do is keep your finger pressed down on the rapid/shoot button and keep it aimed directly on the boss' laser. Then it will expand on it's own. Have a laser battle against two lasers at the same time (with the bosses that spit out two lasers at once) and you'll be seeing something incredible.

The PS2 version has less slowdown, but the arcade G.Darius is supposed to be like this. One eBay seller did gripe about the PS1 version's game speed not being the same as on the PCB.

Midlevel loading in the PS1 version causes a BGM pause which doesn't happen on the PS2 one.

Quad-countering Fire Fossil later on in the game is awesome. So is Haruka's milking spree on Great Thing (one hell of a nice replay, with a suicide to get more capture balls).
Kinect? KIN NOT.
