Yea soukyugurentai stage 3 boss, the tank. Just a huge leap in difficulty, you really need to switch on at that point, then kinda switch off again for stage 4, then on again for stage 5! then off again for stage 5 boss. Then on + + for stage 6.

And any stage 5 plus boss in Dodonpachi and DOJ.

Probably gotta be the floating fetus at the end of Blazing Star. Not that its a very difficult boss, but its fucking ugly. How anticlimatic. You go through all those levels just to kill a giant baby. I can't make sense of it at all.

I found three bosses to hate so much

Strikers 1945 II Stage 5 and 6 boss: They're both pain in the ass to defeat that's just damn,

Strikers 1945 III City train boss, when you made it to 1-4 after bullet hell which was worst in 1-3, when i was near defeating him he just shot me down!

Speaking of which, I really hated the last boss in Gradius 5 (not the brain, but the long tank with the insect-like legs). That had to be the lamest last fight ever. Especially after the boss rush of the level previous. So anti-climatic.

Let's add the Chapter 3 boss of Dodonpachi. He's not a difficult boss, I KNOW I can deal with his junk, but for some inexplicable reason, I almost ALWAYS die on him. It's starting to anger me.

Same thing with Guwange. Giant baby. Ugly.

The tank boss from esp rade, but only if you get that as your third lvl. It seems like his patterns are so much faster and although i practice this fight all the time i still die on it whenever im having a good run at the game.

Destroy small crap from one side only. Don't touch second side. Maybe less points but more secure.

If R-type level 4 boss is giving you a hard time it's because you don't know the easy win tactic, which is even doable from the checkpoint.

It involves getting to the right of him as he flies on with the force on your back, and jamming the force inside the top of the lower section (still attached to your ship) while firing rapidly. if you do it right you'll hit the bottom piece's weak spot before it seperates and destroy it. Once you've found the right height to be at ti's childs play. then you can easily pick off the front part with your blue lasers or your bit, and then the rightmost part is harmless from the left.

First I hated DOJ's first boss. Then I hated stage two. Then I hated stage three. Then I hated myself.

All in all, I think I hated the stages in DOJ a whole lot more than I did its bosses, but the stage one boss annoyed me to the end. It put a stop to many otherwise great full chain stage one runs.

I came to hate Guwange's 2nd level boss, too. I'd always seem to take a hit during the fight, either due to greed or by fumbling its final bullet pattern.

Ah! And Perfect Cherry Blossom's Youmu. Oh, how I loathed her.

Unless you're going for awesome scores, losing a bomb on the 2nd boss is no bad thing. Certainly a lot better than losing a life and getting your chain halved.

Good guwange discussion of tactics from the shmups tourney here (first 2 pages are for several cave games):

Strikers 1999 - the tank boss during the 2nd round. Pure evil. I just can't beat him consistently. And going for the tech bonus is completely undoable for me.

ROBOTRON wrote:Viewpoint last boss...no bombs? Forget it.
He can be quite a pain in the behind, but he is doable without bombs and without dying. His second (?) form is the hardest, when he basically gets to use all of the bomb types you've been using (and then some) against you, but that's all a matter of piloting your ship correctly...the flame walls being the biggest things that need to be watched and maneuvered through.

I honestly found the Stage 4 boss of Viewpoint to be the hardest in the game, and it took me *for-stinking-ever* to figure out how to defeat him without bombs or dying. The battle with Four-Face and me was probably the longest I've ever spent working to be perfect against any one boss...and it was *extremely* gratifying to beat him down like a redheaded stepchild. I was always *very* irritated by him using the little additional faces as shields in his fourth form, making hitting him very hit-and-miss on his small vulnerable spot. Stinking *hated* when he'd send them after me bashing each other whilst simultaneously shooting many bullets at me...I died SO MANY TIMES!!!!

Man, I love that game. Still my favorite. I'm not *nearly* as good at it as I was back then, but I can still strut my stuff when it comes to playing that one.

While I'm here I might as well add Dratrion from Dimahoo to my personal list...I guess I'm just missing something, but for some reason I just lose everything there, even if I've cruised up until that point. I don't usually watch replays, but I'm tempted to look up one for him...

BulletMagnet wrote:Madzella (Batsugun): I think I hate this guy more because he's a level 2 boss than anything else. Deep Purple is almost no problem, and then this sonuvagun shows up the very next stage...in his initial "airplane" form he jerks back and forth rapidly whenever you blow a piece off of him, throwing the screen off and making it tougher to dodge his patterns...once he's in "pod" form not only does he toss near-impossible-to-dodge spam in front of him as he forces you into a wall, but has lots of annoying little helpers to mess things up even more. I don't have half as much trouble with Mad Steel Darkness (stage 3 boss) as I do with this guy. I usually have to bomb at least twice when I fight him.
For a long time I thought it was impossible to beat this boss without bombing. I was just like "WHAT THE FUCK, THIS GAME IS COMPLETELY CHEAP!"

But then I got it. What I say may make no sense, but as I believe you probably have a playing style similar to mine (Liking the same games and everything), it may help you... when you feel like going to RIGHT, go to LEFT and vice-versa. You have to make him shoot in a pattern where it's possible to dodge its shots. I can't remember now exactly how to do that, but I figured it out when I begun moving in the opposite direction my instincts told me to move.

Hope it makes any sense :)

Level 4 Boss in Ikaruga. It was a bitch to memorize/learn from, and almost absolutley no way to finish it the very first time (with no prior experience).

I'd say I hate the level 5 ( goddamn asteroids! ) boss, and the turret laying boss in level 6 in Gradius V. Never really had a problem with the third boss, died a few times on the legs on my first runs tho.

Geobite is launched only if the player is at the side of the screen when the boss satellite deploys.

Yeah, definitely keep your ship in the center over the pod launchers until the boss ejects. That will get you the other boss - much easier.

Though I've been triggering Geobite alot on purpose lately just for fun. Always costs me 1 or 2 bombs, sometimes a life.

The tank boss from esp rade, but only if you get that as your third lvl. It seems like his patterns are so much faster and although i practice this fight all the time i still die on it whenever im having a good run at the game.
That was happening to me too but you just need to keep up the practice :) He is damn hard but if you work at it you'll get his patterns down. I just finally got through him recently without using any bombs or lives.

I know what you and segasonicfan mean, his ST3 form is so much worse. I dread running into it. I can no-miss/no-bomb ST2 quite easily now, but ST3 usually requires two bombs from me to avoid a miss on those fast curtain patterns.

On the subject of ESPRade, Ms. Gara is the biggest "wall" in shooters for me right now. Specifically her first phase (statue). Everything after that, I can see a way through. But when that screenfull of bullets shows up, I just fail to comprehend it and get slaughtered (after using up my bombs, of course). I hate that goddamn thing... I need to put some time on him for sure.
