Gradius on DS?

Post by Monk 0 Nuggets »

Amongst the games on show are Yie-Ar Kung Fu, a fast-paced fighting game starring a host of innovative characters and fighting styles; the horizontally-scrolling shoot ‘em up epic, Gradius; and Time Pilot – a single-screen shooter set through the ages. The full roster of titles will be revealed shortly.

I don't know... DS is not a good platform for shmups. For example Gradius Advance is a bit of a pain to play on a Lite, the screen is just too small for proper bullet dodging and the dpad's a terror. I used to play the Gradius games constantly on my mobile phone years ago, but only because there was no real competition (that I was aware of back then). Nowadays there are loads of damn fine (non-shmup) games available for the DS that are optimized for mobile gaming, so I play those when I'm roaming and get my shmupping dose at home with proper hardware and ergonomics.

Dunno about the rest, are you guys so hardcore that you need shmups for every device at all times?

One of the news stories said this comp would include Twinbee. Guess not?

I just tried Gradius Galaxies on my NDSL last week. I don't find a problem with the screen - it's beautiful, in fact. But true about the D-pad sucking. I could lose all my lives crashing into walls. I was never this bad when using my SP.

I'm also not so big on classic compilations that only include incredibly old games that you could run with a GBA flash card and pocketNES (screen resolution differences, I know... but why would I play the original Gradius when I have Gradius Galaxies)

No, no, it's there. For some reason, Konami had to "Americanize" it by changing the name to Rainbow Bells. Wouldn't the title Stinger have been sufficient? ;)

RainbowBell, not Rainbow Bells. Joking aside, "Stinger" wouldn't have been sufficient becuase it was the US name for the second NES Twinbee, not the first one. The name change is puzzling since it is an arcade collection, but, telling from screens and videos, it seems the actual content within the name changed games was left untouched (except maybe for the voice in Super Basketball, which said the title of the game).

They also changed Super Basketball to "Basketball" and Tutankham to "Horror House". Those changes are especially puzzling since both Super Basketball and Tutankham got US arcade releases and Tutankham got several ports to systems like the 2600, Colecovision, stand alone handheld, and Atari 800.

I don't have DS Lite, but I found Gradius Galaxies, Steel Empire and Nanostray to play fine on the fat DS. It heard it does diagonals better than the newer model. I also like how the D-pad on it is fairly big. Also, the screen size didn't bother me. The clarity of the screen makes up for the small screen size IMO.

No offense but could the mods close this now? We already have a thread for this comp on the main page:

I think an original Gradius game on the DS would rock. (Just as long they don't do any stupid gimmicky crap with the touch screen)

Imagine a Gradius game with touch screen control. Use item button is tipping once on the left side, missile on the right. In some sections, both screens are used (i.e. in the Maoi stage) so that you can dive from one screen into the other. Wow, that'll be great!!
