PSX shmups?
yeah we hardly ever talk PSX shmups here, altho this console has hundreds of em, lets give it a go.
i picked up some that atleast i've never heard of before while i was in japan.
meta-ph-list is an rpg-ish shmup thats in english to boot, tries really hard to be RSG mixed with layer section but doesnt quite reach all the way, still perfectly enjoyable and i will certainly give it an honest go..
two-tenkaku should have been on the SNES if it hadnt been for the shitty 3D cinemas between levels, playable, easy, uninspired and the music is just fucking wierd!
i quite like it tho, pick the dodonpachi style ship and just breeze thru this colorful shmup.
??? (simple 1500 the shooting), i have no idea what this game is really called but heres a screenshot of the box, http://japangames.se/html/konsoller/pla ... T0026.html
plays like thunderforce 5 with only the lockon weapon all the time, pretty decent, downright bad music tho and 3D-story-cinemas that make you want to jump out of the nearest window..
theres plenty more, keep em coming..[/url]

Unremarkable but not awful, worth picking up if you can get it cheap...only then, though.two-tenkaku

Yeah, it has the crappy 3D cutscenes as well.
This is the first time I've heard anybody say they've actually played Metaphlist. I always thought it was some Starblade-like 3D thingy, not a proper shmup. Sounds interesting! Is it nice eye-candy at least? Do you think you could take a few screenshots?

I'm one of the few here who thinks that the PS1 has the best shmup library of any console, but I'll be the first to admit that it has some of the worst as well. At one time I thought I'd collect all the shmups for PS1, but now I think that's a pretty odd, unmotivated goal. I have plenty to keep me busy in Strikers II, the Raidens, Toaplan Shooting...

For what the Playstation was orginally made to do, some of these programers did a fucking good job for some of these shmups.
Lets start with DonPachi and DoDonPachi. We all know how not so good the Saturn ports were. This unknown publisher called S.P.S came out of no where and ported both Cave shmups onto the PSX with perfection. While DoDonPachi on the PSX doesn't allow you to play different ships during TATE, the gameplay and the graphics were very close to the arcade. Now, I really don't believe the PSX can do something like this (with all of those sprites on the screen), but SPS was able to do it with that little RAM.
Now, Strikers 1945 II. The Saturn port was slow as fuck, we all know that. When Psikyo ported it onto the PSX, they did a better job. While it was slow in some places, it was noting like the Saturn port.
Now, lets talk about the infamous Soukyugerentai port on the PSX. It's true that the port has slowdowns in it (not a lot) and some graphic loss (very little), but considering the small RAM of the PSX and the game was based of the ST-V board (which was based of the Saturn board itself), the port was impressive (but of course it wasn't perfect, but it's still VERY playable). Also it's cool to see some graphical effects which you figured was impossible on the PSX.
Then there was Thunder Force V while the Saturn version was a little better on the graphics department, it was just about the same as the Saturn version.
Also some of the more mainstream shmups are on the PSX. From Raidens to the R-Types, to Taito's Ray shooters (well, two of them), to Gradius (Gaiden, and all of those Deluxe packs), and to Square's famous shmup, Einander.
They were a good number of shmups for the PSX, so don't say that the PSX had none, because it got a good number of them.
I consider the PSX and the Saturn libary of shmups to have the same quality. Doesn't matter which system you pick, you'll still miss the other systems shmups somehow.

Notables
Raystorm
Harmful Park
G Darius
Thunder Force V (IMO it is superior to the Sat ver., the PSX can handle the poly's alot better, though the sat ver. is a little faster and harder., and yes i have both to compare)
Raiden
Raiden DX
Strikers 1945 II (original release, not watered down success reprint)
DoDonpachi (kills sat ver)
Einhander (good game regardless, very tough)
But i will say this the Saturn has a much more impressive lineup (because of the variety) and not because of RS

Raystorm was orginaly made on the FX-1B hardware (just a Playstation with more RAM I think).lawnspic wrote:I just saw this thread after playing some Raystorm, was the ps1 based on namco system 11 hardware, and was Raystorm originally on that hardware or was it Gnet. The sat version(layer section2) is horrible BTW
Porting a 3D PSX game onto the Saturn is going to bring up terrible results (talk to Layer Section II about what happen).

True, it was originally made for sat and then made for the PSX. I never got the term "port" because a game has to totally be rewritten for another piece of hardware. So i would be more comfortable with the term "Playstation version" instead of port. I like both versions but i prefer the Psx to the Sat and not by much. I think the Sat ver. is a little more hardcore, i came close to a 1 life clear on the Psx ver., and im sure that would not be the case with the Sat by a long shot. I just think the Psx ver. is better looking thats all due to its 3D strengths.SAM wrote:Except, for Thunder Force V, which is made to run on a Saturn.Fighter17 wrote:Porting a 3D PSX game onto the Saturn is going to bring up terrible results (talk to Layer Section II about what happen).

Those cutscenes are hilariously bad, one of the reasons to own the thing. The game itself is only slightly above average due to some interesting weapons mechanics, but the cutscenes are the most elaborate of any shmup on the system (released in the US, anyway), aside from Philosoma. And unlike the Philosoma FMV (which can be extremely cool at times), the Shooter: Space Shot cutscenes are just atrocious. However, that's half the fun of owning the game. The end-game scene is worth the price of admission alone.CIT wrote:Yeah, it has the crappy 3D cutscenes as well.

its a proper shmup allright, kinda has a zero gunner 2 mechanic where you rotate your ship around to kill enemies from all directions.CIT wrote:Yeah, it has the crappy 3D cutscenes as well.

Sanvein was originally going to be for the Taito G-Net...
For louisg, louisg wrote:Can I stand up for Sanvein? If you like those Kenta Cho games, Sanvein might be worth a look. While it's not without some flaws,it's pretty entertaining, available in the US, and somewhat under the radar.
Sanvein was originally developed for the Taito G-Net motherboard at the same time as Success' Psyvariar Medium Unit G-Card game but they decided to release Psy-MU instead and regulate Sanvein to the backburner...eventually was released for the PSX console in Japan & the USA (as a $9.99 USD PSX budget game release). ^_~
Sanvein as a Taito G-Card would been ace to play on a Taito G-Net setup... ^_~
Tetsuro Sato did the BGM tunes for both Psy-MU + Psyvariar Revision and Sanvein -- I thought that one Sanvein BGM tune did indeed sound very similar to Psy-MU BGm tunes and was surprised to see his name in the Sanvein ending credits..... ^_~
Another PSX shmup title from Japanese developer, Aroma, by the name of "Geppy X - 70's Robot Anime" spans an impressive four PSX CD-Rom discs chock full of shmuppy goodiness -- has some jiggly breast scenes during the anime FMV cutscenes as a "fan service" nod to anime fans..... ^_~

I have never seen a copy online or in any game stores. Drives me crazy when I see tons of Zanac Neo but no f-n Toaplan collection.
didnt buy one tho, gameselection is kinda lame if you ask me, if you look at the toaplan library there are 10games id rather have than the ones on the collection..
