Post by lawnspic »

I was thinking about getting these two, anyone know if they are good or not?

I didn't play Gatchaman, but if you love the Sonic Wings series, get Special.

Special got a good number of planes you can play with, and plus it's Sonc Wings 1,2,3 all mixed in!

I have SWS on the Saturn, supposedly the PS1 version is mostly the same: plays something like an early Psikyo game (it's from Video System, after all) but less challenging than most, relatively simple, and has a large aircraft selection to choose from, and a bunch more to unlock. The SS version also has a boss attack mode, not sure about the PS1. If you can get it for a decent price I'd say it's worth trying out.

Gatchaman, if my memory serves, is okay presentation and gameplay-wise, but there are only two "difficulty settings", and they're WAY on opposite ends of the spectrum: the default one gives you a life meter, and makes the game very easy (1CCed it on my first try, the only game I've ever been able to do that on), and the other places only a single hit between you and the game over screen. It's been awhile since I played it, so my memory might be a bit rusty...only buy if cheap.

Thanks for the help, SWS sounds good from what you said.

There should be an FAQ for it on GameFAQs which covers pretty much everything about it, if you need more detailed info...I think a member from here might've written it, but I honestly forget.

Aye, our very own Herr Schatten wrote it.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Sonic Wings Special: Very nice! Just like the Neo Geo games, but with tate.

Gatchaman: Easy, short, repetitive. A budget release.

I had just received Sonic Wings Special after an Ebay purchase. Not bad, but I to me it was nothing special...hopefully its a better choice than picking Steam Hearts.

I'm probably one of SWS's biggest fans.
Check out details on my site.
4 difficulty levels.
PSX and Saturn are exactly the same as far as modes and options are concerned.
PSX version is better because the saturn version misses a few graphic lines. It's not entirely screenfilling, whereas the PSX version is.
The original PCB is based on PS hardware, so the PS version is the closest. The Saturn version has slightly different music, not necesarily worst, just a little different. Sound fx on the SS version are worst than the PS version.
No better shmups exist on the saturn for this price. (flamebait, hehe  resist, the urge.....)

Yeah, there seem to be quite a few Saturn ports that have worse sound-effects than their PS1 counterparts.

Well, this topic made me play Sonic Wings Special again. A shmup from a simpler time; not in a bad way. Pretty good looking, considering this is PS1.

Gatchaman is, as others pointed out, damn easy at the default setting. However, it has great style.

Sonic Wings Special has what I consider to be the best ship roster out of the entire series. Good gameplay, too.

Yes but avoid it, there's no save feature.

If SWS is anything like the Saturn version make sure to get the one that included the bonus mini disc so you can have a copy of the worst soundtrack ever made.

Why, does it include a soundtrack of 1942 for NES? ;)
