BEST port of Xenon 2?...

Post by dave4shmups »

The SMS port is really slowed down (or is that just Emukon?), although the Mega Drive port is runs really well, as does the GB port. How in the world could the SMS port be slower then the GB one? Weird.

So, what is the best port of this great shmup?

I'd hardly call it great, but the Amiga original is easily the best.

All the ones you mentioned suck, I'm afraid.

I mean, the SMS one could get kudos for being able to replicate such graphics, but the rest is unplayable.

The Megadrive version almost got it, but it's crippled because it completely lacks the last stage, not to mention the many weapons available only in the last shop.

So yeah - best option to play it is an Amiga, or a CD32.

Both versions I've played (Amiga and Megadrive) appeared to run at about 30fps or so if I remember correctly - which is not exactly ideal. Control responsiveness and collision detection just aren't good enough at that framerate IMHO. (Nice graphics though.)

If I recall the best conversion of Xenon 2 from the flagship Amiga version is the Atari ST port, as the visuals were practically identical except for a missing parallax layer. And while unfortunately it didn't feature the Amiga's spectacular audio intro track (none of the other ports did either), the Atari ST version at least replaced it with a reasonably similar new remix specially created for the ST. All of the other ports were of lower quality, the next best probably being the PC version with even more missing parallax layers and graphical details and essentially a lack of audio.
