I wouldn't be shocked if there ends up being a version planned for the Nintendo Wii sooner or later, given this system's power advantage over PS2 (supposedly at least on par with original Xbox if not stronger still). It'd be a shame for Arika to let the code go to waste without porting it to another system.
Any Cave shmup alone would sell me a Japanese Wii system, barring the release of a "WiiLoader" for import games on a US unit.

They could put in a fake scanlines option for 31khz mode, like the recent Sega Ages have. Better than not.Yeah, really. But the TATE mode wouldn't be in low res as the PS3 can't output that. Sad So we'd get another blurry mess. Still better than nothing though.

On the other side Wii is the only console with a big enough user base to make a port worthwhile. Also isn't the wii the only next gen console that is capable of lowres output(not to sure about that).UnscathedFlyingObject wrote:The Wii is probably too innovative for this game.
Anyway it would be nice to see ports of the current Cave games.
Taco Pirates!
I heard the Wii wasn't capable of low res either (see all the old games on the virtual console, they're all upscaled/filtered). Unless they released an Arcade stick for the Wii, it would suck big time playing with a joypad. Maybe you could use a PS2>GC converter or something though.
I don't see Cave ever releasing anything on the Wii, but that's just me.

I wish they wouldn't have even announced this. Everyone had pretty much given up entirely on the idea of a Ketsui port, much less from Arika, but then this...really, how much do they want to rub it in?
Edit: I've got an idea. The Arika offices are close to where I live and I think close to where Gaijin Punch is at as well. Let's go down there and throttle them until we get a port.

Same logic can apply to the Wii, seeing as it supports 480i and 480p modes only, and all Cave arcade boards are exactly 320x240 tate (ie: they can scale all of Cave's titles exactly double in each direction, adding a fake scanline optionally if they like, and not lose any detail).GaijinPunch wrote:They could put in a fake scanlines option for 31khz mode, like the recent Sega Ages have. I've been praying for some time that Cave and their console partners jump on the Wii bandwagon. That would make me a very happy puppy.
Or, if they ported it with GC controller support you could simply use a GC arcade stick (the hori soul cal stick would work, mod it if you have to), or heck, the classic controller. I play most of my shooters with whatever controller as is (DC, Saturn, PS2), and the Classic Controller is better than two of those by a big margin =P It seems an unlikely target for Cave ports, but it would be VERY cool if they did. Wii as the shooter console for this generation would kick so much colon, we'd have to import colon to keep up with demand.twe wrote:I heard the Wii wasn't capable of low res either (see all the old games on the virtual console, they're all upscaled/filtered). What the heck are you talking about? All of wii's VC games have sharp, unmessed resolution EXCEPT TG-16 turbografx titles, which originally use 256×224 (or even variables of that!), that obviously don't fit well with Wii's native resolution.twe wrote:I heard the Wii wasn't capable of low res either (see all the old games on the virtual console, they're all upscaled/filtered). Also to comment another post: Horsepower isn't problem with porting Ketsui, but memory is. Obviously all enemies and background didn't fit in memory at once. FMV background streaming would be pretty stupid, because compressed fast motion looks notoriously crap, not to mention myriads of synching problems between sprites and background.
might this news be good for mame emulation of ketsui? i know about the encryption/decryption problems and all but as it's not being ported one may argue that in the interest of preservation it "should" be added to mame in working form...yeah, i know it's not really how it works in the real world.
based on the translations given here the message does seem very ambiguous and rather cruel. if you look at it hopefully it just says that the ps2 port is not ever coming. like said earlier it might be that they will move it over to another system (or perhaps a pc) one day though probably not.
well at least now we can put this behind us and just hope on a prototype leak for those of us who can play burned media on our ps2s.

so they actually were working on a port.. man this is depressing beyond belief
"Mihara wrote that even though Ikeda forgave them for not being able to get Stage 5 'perfect', and gave them permission to release the port anyway, they still wouldn't allow it."
aargh!!
please please use the work done on some other machine..

Those are old 15khz progressive games being played in either 31khz mode, or 15khz interlaced. Sharp is not really the word to use here. What the heck are you talking about? I don't know about the PS3 (I hear it doesn't support low res) but I know the Wii doesn't. No offense to those that love their Wii, but being a system that was built to bring in new, casual gamers is by far the worst choice for a game like Ketsui (Old and nitch).

So make the background disappear, delete some layers, make it scroll the other way, etc. The background graphics don't affect gameplay unless there's a visibility problem. Yeah it wouldn't be 'just like the arcade', but Mushi and Ibara are even further from the arcade and not only in graphical ways.
Now how's that PGM emulation coming?

So despite this recent announcment of Arika's port of Ketsui for the PS2 cancelled, then would the original and fixed versions of Ketsui PCB skyrocket in value (since that's the only way to 100% legit way to be able to play it)?
Surely, all that PS2 Ketsui coding will not have gone to waste..... ^_~

RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!!!!
I think some of you people need a slight reality check here.
1) changing/removing/etc the 'backward scrolling' background likely isn't going to fix anything. I find it hard to believe that just having things move in the opposite direction completely fucks everything up. He's just using that as a description of WHERE the issues occur. That part of the stage is pretty crazy; there's a multitiude of issues that could occur there. Quit focusing on this 'background' thing.
2) All that code they have for the PS2? It means nothing for a port to another platform. It's going to be full of hand-tweaked assembly language and various other PS2-specific things. Releasing it on another platform would involve nearly starting from scratch again. This code is 'going to waste' no matter if they never relase this OR release it on another console.
3) another console? Hah. This is the guy who has been told by Cave he could release what he has; yet he refuses because it isn't perfect. You think he wants to release it on a platform that can't do the correct low-res video output? Sure he could do some fake-scanline thing or something; but that's still just 'good enough' for us. He doesn't seem to operate in the 'it's good enough, release it' realm of thinking. His goal is an arcade-perfect port; that's a big factor in why he picked the PS2. Don't hold your breath for other platforms.
I'd actually be more interested to see if people can convince him to release a video clip of the bad part of the 5th stage. If enough people say they'd buy it even with that small issue (assuming it isn't completely gameplay ruining) that's probably our best chance of changing his mind. Even if it is gameplay ruining I'd still like to see it.
