That's a shame. If Sony aren't putting the blocks on it, I'd hate to think that Konami themselves have started to view Gradius as a risky series that should be left on the back-burner until they've gotten their feet in the next-gen door...
Perhaps the recent Gradius Collection sold less than Konami's projections, so they can't justify funding a full next-gen Gradius project right now? This is a really disappointing cancellation, but Konami have always treated the Gradius franchise with respect and not forgotten about it, so I trust they'll eventually produce another Gradius game when they feel the market timing is right.
In all fairness I can't complain too much about Konami since they're still giving shmup fans Salamander Portable, Parodius Portable and Twin Bee Portable collections all this month, kudos to Konami for that. In this context also, perhaps Konami calculate that releasing Gradius 6 too soon now would just flood the market with too many similar games...

Good call, TF. Really, i'd rather wait a little longer for it anyway. The more developing knowledge the team has the better the game will look and play on the new gen hardware so a second or third generation title would be something i'd prefer anyway. Not to mention that this game is gonna have to live up to the legacy of Gaiden and Gradius V with us. All PS specific Gradius titles have been stellar so far so i'd expect no less from this one.
GAH can you imagine how awesome this game will look though!?! I'm definetly peeing a little
to be honest this doesn't bother me. after gradius V, i don't see how konami could top it unless they hired treasure again. if this is the end of the numbered Gradius titles, then the series ended the way all good things should - at it's peak.

Ehh? When are these collections coming out, and on what platform??
Agreed TF, they'll put out another Gradius if they feel the need. Although I would definately echo Stormowl's sentiments that if V is the last Gradius game we ever get, then the series ended quite well-certainly better then the R-Type series ended for R-Type fans.

PSP, Jan. 25th in Japan, no U.S. release dates so far. The Salamander collection includes Xexex! Remember that PSP's are region free, so order away if you feel the need.

QFT, but i wouldn't worry about it. Konami obviously deeply loves it's Gradius series. Wether they continue on with the main series or not isn't really all that big of a deal because we know we'll always get new Gradius in some form or another ^.^
I find it to be that Konami realised just how hard it would be to develop Gradius on PS3, let alone alot of PS3 games. now honestly, they announced Gradius VI around the time of PS3 hype. afterwards they said nothing else about it. This seems more like a decision of "holy crap, we better wait 'till we get our land legs first!" than it does actual cancellation of Gradius on a whole.

Awesome; thanks for the news!

As long as Gradius lives on, it really doesn't matter what platform Konami chooses.
I think it'd be interesting to see how Konami does making a new Gradius by themselves, and how different it could be from Treasure's V.
It says the games reported to be cancelled are actually not cancelled but rather their release dates are currently unknown. So it looks like there probably will be Gradius on the PS3, some day.
IGN sucks at confirming things... because we know now that Gradius 6 isn't canceled they're just trying to make next-gen that's why it's taking so long

That's welcome news indeed. And I'd like to second what TF said, even if it was cancelled, Konami has still been good to shmup fans this year with the 4 PSP comps.
Last night i dreamed this was coming out, developed in house at Konami by the usual Gradius team but with inspiration taken from Gradius V. Now unfortunatly the video preview i was dreaming about was talking about how Konami wanted to take advantage of the next gen graphics by switching to a behind the ship view at various points. What i was seeing on the screen looked like balls. Luckily this was just a dream. ^.^
so long and tanks for all the spacefish unban shw <Megalixir> now that i know garegga is faggot central i can disregard it entirely
<Megalixir> i'm stuck in a hobby with gays
I'm not really a big Gradius fan, but V is one of my top shmups ever. Of course, I love Treasure's shooters.
Now, if they can get it as good as Gaiden(which was the best Konami Gradius), and get rid of that stupid restart after you die shit, i'll be all over this. Maybe the PS3 will be below 500 dollars by THEN. God, what a psycho expensive machine.

Used to be my favorite shmup ever.....
.....but then I discovered Cave.
I havent really gone back to Konami since.
And certain parts of the design of V irritated the heck outta me (so I dont play it very much).
Still, it's sorta nice to see it being continued......
........well, sorta. If it were on something that WASNT the PS3, I'd consider buying it.
But since it is the PS3, well, screw that......
O rly? Then please konami to make that game for that hardware failure 360, maybe it has 3-year warranty but it's heat during games sucks balls (if your room is 35^C for example) Xbox 360 will be 100^C :O on standard room temperature 22^C it would be 87^C.... god screw you microsoft fanboys (Those heat stats were done by japanese who wanted to discover the truth about overheating of that FAILURE)
I love V even though I'm terrible at it, but why oh why does VI have to be on the PS3...it's a shmup, it's not like the graphics are going to matter whatsoever. Why not release it on the Wii, much larger install base and it'll be cheaper to develop, plus with all the shmups on the Virtual Console people might be more willing to try it out. It's not exactly much like Geometry Wars...
