Component to VGA: what will do the job?

Post by Franz the Stampede »

Hello again!

Me and my housemate want to get rid of interlaced stuff. What are the possible options to convert a component (YPbPr) signal to VGA? I've seen a lot of cables that claim to do that, like these:
http://froogle.google.co.uk/froogle?q=c ... a=N&tab=wf

Is a cable enough to do the job? Or are those supposed to run VGA signals into composite (kinda the opposite thing I have to do). Because I got one from a friend and tried to use it to connect the Xbox "High Definition AV Pack" to some VGA inputs (my evil monitor and a projector) but it didn't quite work (a bunch of green lines on the monitor, nothing at all on the projector and they both accept Dreamcast 480p output).

So we wanted to do something to have the 480p output out of the PS2 (but ONLY in the games that support it, so no "forced" upscanning) to be run in the VGA input of a projector. Would some adapter to the PS2 component cable work? Or do we need some kind of box?
Can you give me some advice on these adapters/converters, bearing in mine that we kinda just need a signal converter, not an upscanner, cause if a PS2/Xbox game does not support 480p we won't bother...

Thanks!

Those cables don't perform any signal conversion. We used one to run YPbPr component from a receiver to a projector that supported YPbPr through the HD-15 connector. I imagine it would work equally well for things that can be toggled to output RGB through the component output to something with a VGA input, assuming sync signal compatability.

Since you're only planning on playing progressive-scan capable games anyway... if your projector supports sync-on-green, there's a VGA cable for the PS2 that came with the PS2 Linux kit or the Blaze PS2 VGA adaptor. There are also probably instructions available for making your own.

There's also the X2VGA for your XBox.

Edit: Actually, the X2VGA would probably work for all of your aforementioned needs...

Thanks for the answer!
Ok, this also if there is no "Sync on Green" thing on any of the two devices we want to feed the VGA signal to?

thanks for the suggestion too!

I had a quick look and apparently the X2VGA 2 can do something about 480i, which I reckon would be good for those silly games which dont support progressive scan...

It won't be playable. It has a 480i mode, but I think it's a half-screen mode. It's only there if you need to configure some settings in 480i or something.

You've only got to worry about that if using the PS2 VGA cable.

bump.

I have a question about these. Is there any VGA boxes that have composite/s-video and component inputs? I would like to get my Super Nintendo/PS2 plugged into my dell monitor. Thanks!

Tons. Gamestop had one last time I was there (admittedly a while ago), and there's this thing at Play-Asia.

NTSC->VGA looks like blurry artifacted garbage, by the way. Just as a heads-up.

There are other alternatives that force 480p out of your ps2
If you put the infinity mod chip in there, there should be lots of games you can play at 480p. I don't have one myself, but I hear good things every now and then. Even for those silly (I agree) games

Thanks for the recommendations guys, but non of these do both (input composite for SNES and component for PS2 while still being output at 480p) I'm trying to find one because I have a 30" widescreen HD CRT that only outputs at 1080i and causes anything less than 720p to look like balls. The Mayflash one looks like my best bet, but it is not only sold out, but hard to find other places. Let me know if you guys find anything else. Thanks again!

Hello again! So, again, I'm looking for a VGA box. I've changed my mind and just want to get some shmups up and running in tate on my computer monitor. I want to play ESPGaluda on my PS2 through component. Now if I get the X2VGA, will it output correctly?

The X2VGA won't help you. If a game just outputs 15khz YUV (like ESPGaluda) then the X2VGA will only output 15khz RGBHV and that won't work with your PC display.

You need an upscaling device like a XRGB2/3.

The x2VGA is a signal convertor, not an upscale convertor. The XRGB is the best but not the only upscale convertor.

Besides, for the most part your defeating the idea of how shmups are supposed to look by upscaling. The XRGB does have scanline options on it though :)
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

It's the only cheap option I have available to me at this point in time.
