Pal Shmups
I just installed my Swap Magic Lid so I can play Japanese imports. My questions is, the CD states that I can play PAL (50hz) games on my NTSC TV using this swap magic disc. There are a bunch of PAL games that seem cheaper than their japanese counter parts. Are thses worth going for? Are their any PAL games that you guys would suggest? Does this even work well enough to buy PAl games?

I have no idea on how or if it will work but the Pal conversion of Psyvariar Complete is good, and so are Dragon Blaze and Homaru. Each of the above also have 60 hz options aswell so i think that if you memorize the button patterns you'll be able to change it.
Don't take my word on this however as i haven't tried it.

50 or 60hz depends on the system and not the game disc.. for instance if you play some PAL NES games on a US system they will run at higher speed because some games were optimised for the PAL release to run at the same speed as NTSC versions..Kron wrote:Typically if you try 50hz on an NTSC TV you'll get a screen that continually rolls from top to bottom.
as far as PAL vs JAP PSX reccomendations.. lots of great shmups were released in PAL territory, theyre all in english too, but other than that i cant really think of any "superiour" features vs the JAP ones.. i know X2 sucks ass in PAL anyways, maybe its better in JAP?

This isn't always the case as Ceph points out, Also the US NES only outputs in 60hz so any PAL NES games that were universal would be forced to run at the higher clock rate thanks to the hardware.sven666 wrote: 50 or 60hz depends on the system and not the game disc.. for instance if you play some PAL NES games on a US system they will run at higher speed because some games were optimised for the PAL release to run at the same speed as NTSC versions.

really, didnt know that, isnt it possible to force the system to run it at 60hz anyways?Ceph wrote:For (modded) PAL Playstations it does depend on the disc (PAL games make the PS go to 50hz, NTSC games make it switch to 60); the same goes for PS2 PAL releases that don't have a 60hz option.sven666 wrote: 50 or 60hz depends on the system and not the game disc.

You can use Blaze's Game Accelerator to boost a 50hz game into 60hz, but it doesn't centre the screen correctly, so you usually end up with a border remaining at the top of ther screen and a big chunk at the bottom of the screen cut off.sven666 wrote:really, didnt know that, isnt it possible to force the system to run it at 60hz anyways?Ceph wrote:For (modded) PAL Playstations it does depend on the disc (PAL games make the PS go to 50hz, NTSC games make it switch to 60); the same goes for PS2 PAL releases that don't have a 60hz option.sven666 wrote: 50 or 60hz depends on the system and not the game disc.
Incidentally, if anyone is interested in the Pal version of Shikigami no Shiro 2, I'd advise you to get the Japanese release, as the Pal edition not only lacks a 60hz mode but has also been made easier (less durable enemies/simplified bullet patterns).
