What shmup could I buy with $30?

Post by Milkgoat »

I have a PS2, and a Saturn that both desperately need some more shmups. My PS2 can play japanese PS2 games but not PS1, so please don't name any for PS1 if they need to be imported. My Saturn can also play japanese games. Please no European games. I don't have a PAL TV.

The shmups I currently own on both are:

PS1/PS2:
Raiden Project (PS1)
G Darius (PS1)
Castle Shikigami 2
Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 1
Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 2
Taito Legends
Namco Museum

Saturn:
Layer Section/Galactic Attack/Rayforce/Gunlock
Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus
Gradius Deluxe Pack

It doesn't matter to me if they are vertical or horizontal. Thank you in advance.

Mushihimesama(PS2) can be had for a little over $30 if you get the budget release. As can Homura, but I've not played it so I can't really recommend it in confidence. The first two volumes of the Psikyo Shooter Collections can also be had for ~$30, but I'd definitely get Mushi over those.

Saturn shmups I'd suggest that I think you can get for under $30 (some you might have to look pretty hard though for that kind of deal).

Dodonpachi (this one ran me $34 and I got a good deal on it, so yeah)
Donpachi (underrated because of the overbearing awesomeness that is Dodonpachi, but still a very good game, and not very expensive at all)
Soukyugurentai
Galactic Attack ($10-$15 tops, and an awesome game to boot)
Game Tengoku
Shienryu (if you like Raiden-style shooters)
Gokujo Parodius Da! Deluxe Pack
Detana Twinbee Deluxe Pack

Metal Black goes for nearly $50 on japangamestock, who almost always has cheaper prices than any other source I can find. They also have a new and sealed copy going for $95 or so.

Edit: Oh wait, that's probably not the "lo-rent" version with alternate cover art. Where would you find such a thing? I don't see any on ebay either, there are a bunch with weird red and white covers instead of gold and black, but the art is the same, and they still run ~$50.

Yeah, you're right.

On the other hand... - how the hell did we all miss THAT deal?

Gradius V.

(or R-Type Final if you like the series)

Edit: Sorry, I missed the SS part:

Soukyugurentai

Thunderforce V

Not sure how many of these you can snatch for $30 or below. The PS2 ones definitely, as they are quite cheap.

I can, I'd recommend snagging it.

Metal Black (and several other shmups) are avilable on the "Taito Memories" collections on PS2, which, IIRC, got "Best" releases and can be had for 30-40 bucks each.

As mentioned on another recent thread, Twinkle Star Sprites: La Petite Princesse also got a budget re-release recently; I recommend snagging it.

Make that $24-$27 each.

There is a Shienryu/Shienryu Explosion/Helicopter pack for $20, you can forget about the Helicopter game but you're still getting two fun games for $10 each.

If I recall, the SS JP version of Thunderforce V is over $30 (possibly $50 even), but the PS1 US version may be $15 or below.

How about Ibara? Is it any good? I see it's getting a Best release in a few days.

Holy crap! Every shmuper on the face of the planet went to sleep for the same week I guess.

Metal Black is on one of the Taito Memories things? I'll have to look into that.

The Taito Best release of Ibara has been cancelled near as everyone can tell. Dunno why play-asia still has it listed.

You are missing R-Type Delta and Einhander.

There's also a port of Strikers 1945 II that got released under the name Strikers 1945 (confusing huh?).

Unfortunately, they are older games, so you may have to look online for them.
