Atari 2600 Shmups?

Post by Blade »

I've been playing Demon Attack recently, but I haven't played much of Atari to know what shmups are out there for it.

Does anyone have a list? And hopefully one of decent games.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I'm not sure but I think I remember playing River Raid on the old 2600. And a kind of shmup I use to play alot was Seaquest. Also Yars Revenge might be one.

Spider Fighter!!!! One of my all time favorites for the 2600. Also, Pheonix, and a legitimate side scroller...Vanguard..both top and side scrolling for that matter.

Solar Storm by Imagic. My personal favorite. Totally awesome box cover! Wish I could find it again.

You played with a paddle. The ship fire was like a lightning bolt - not a bullet, but a ZAP!!!. Problem was: most of the enemies had the SAME attack! And they moved really fast. It really kept you on your toes. One of these days I'm getting an Atari Flashback 2 and hacking it! I still have a ton of dandies including SS, Beamrider, Gorf and Turmoil.

Side note: I wish w/ all of the new games being developed over at Atariage.com they'd create some new crazy dark maze game like Alien or Mattell's Night Stalker.

Spider Fighter, for a 2600 game it's so damned intense.

Two of my personal favorites are:

Yar´s Revenge (utterly brillant)
Snoopy and the Red baron (Defender variant with some of the best visuals on the system).

And another vote for Spider Fighter, discovered this gem thanks to the Activision Anthology. :)

Don't forget Activision's Megamania! It is an absolute classic, and if you ever get a chance to see the US television spot for it, do so! The Sammy Hagar reject featured on the commercial is no end of funny!

I've never played Beamrider or Spider Fighter, but after reading that old thread, I think I might have to...

The 2600 has more high-quality shmups then most people probably think it does.

The 2600 ports of Phoenix, Pleiades, and Galaxian (in particular) are all superior to the arcade originals, so grab those. Subterranea is a great Defender clone, and Laser Gates is fantastic as well. Good stuff! :D
