Gynoug is partially fantastic, but starts of way too slow. The levels are too long and far too little is going on. The theme however is excellent, I love the boss design, including their very well designed bullet patterns.

It's hard to determine the best shooter for the system, there are tons of decent ones, and no obvious flawless stuff. I think however I'm going to have to go with Gleylancer. Very cool presentation and with a fun and addictive weapon system.
Gynoug would be near the top of my list as well. I mean, it's got a giant cringing throbbing dick man and that makes for great shooting. ^.^

Almost everybody disagrees that the life bars could be a bad thing (myself included). Keeps you from getting too angry when you make a stupid mistake and get hit once or twice.

This is not making any sense..
I think the game is brilliant.
I only have the japanese version.

That Contra game is a bit of a mess anyway, I prefer the easier version which makes for easier access to all of its wonderful presentation. Having beaten the western version before (all routes), I have no need to feel ashamed either. :)

My grammar is a bit problematic, but it's late, damnit. Let me rephrase:

Almost nobody would say that the life bars are a bad thing. The Western versions (Probotector and Contra: Hard Corps on the Genesis) don't have the life bars; Thus they are much harder, and also have a little bit of character animation/sound unused as a result.

So we agree, actually.

Also, my only copy is the Japanese one, as well. Possibly the very first Mega Drive game I bought.

I have to say that this thread, although it's probably a repeat, has been extremely helpful. I've been following it since I own a Genesis and a handful of nice STGs that I received as a gift, aside from pretty much simply Sonic games that I had owned before that. So, I'm going to be looking into some of these titles. Thanks to everyone for their recommendations and advice!

GreyLancer is the most fucking easy shmup I've ever played. My second time playing it on a emulator I got to the final boss of the game.

This game is so not worth the money, seriously.

But sadly it beats the rest of the system's just bad games. I'm sure you can up the difficulty anyways.

YES!!! Please Fighter17, spread the word across the whole net!! This game is too easy, not worth the price!!!

(as a matter of fact, I need to grab one, so if this whole community could be convinced of this, the price out there might lower...)

Reality check: Phelios, which you rank among the system's best is a crappy crappy game. And the Forgotten Worlds port is nothing to write home about, either.

I guess Phelios doesn't get extra points from you because of divine incest, then?

I have a soft spot for FW made softer by the fact that the port is easy as hell (arcade version maybe a little too hard for what I want to get out of it) and the BGM is louder. Phelios is a good game. I think Namco is underrated as a shooter developer of the time. Ordyne also gets shafted.

Most Genesis shooters have many of these problems:

-stages go on too long, heavy amounts of repetition
-too many power-ups, useless weapons, etc. (ex. Phelios offers some useful power-ups, but you aren't at a major disadvantage if you die)
-cheap challenge or none at all
-gigantic hitbox, sloppy hit detection
-inconvenient checkpoints
-hideous

There are many other things that ruin a variety of these games, but Phelios has no glaring flaws. It may not be exceptional, but far more playable than the bulk of the junk below.

This game is better than everything else on the list, as far as I'm concerned, but the port in question is useless. This game must be played at full speed in tate format. Otherwise what's the point?

Quoted for truth.

Another game worth mentioning is Slap Fight, which for the most part beats many other games out in the gameplay department for it's price is a bit more than most people find acceptable.

V-V, a slight twist on an awkward, flickering proto-DonPachi.

I have to say I really like Grind stormer, but I'd like to point the fact that, like you say, it's a proto-manic game, since the patterns are dense and modern, and also the bullets are modernly designed... it shoul'd earn a prize just because it's a pioneer of the genere... I woul'd say a proto-Batsugun...

I think Task Force Harrier EX is pretty tight. You gotta love that jazzy level outro music too.

I'm being relatively serious here. While certainly not the best on the Genesis, it's really underappreciated.

Yeah, I like that one. I'd say it and Verytex are kinda like hidden gems.

Now I'm REALLY glad I have this game :D

Where's Zero Wing and Hellfire? Two more great Toaplan horizontals. Though Zero Wing has to be played on Hard mode.
