Shmup release dates pattern

Post by Neon »

Does it seem to anyone else most shmups are released in Japan in February or the middle of summer?

Just a thought

Arcade, home port, or both? I haven't really noticed a pattern, although a lot of stuff does seem to hit in summertime.

Time for someone to come through and post release dates of every shmup to hit the market since 2000, or something.

Yeah, I can't name any noteworthy shooter that was released in October-December in recent years. You could probably even bring that down to August, excluding domestic ports. Hopefully Exelica and whatever will be announced soon. February is definitely the time for at least DC ports.
Time for someone to come through and post release dates of every shmup to hit the market since 2000, or something.
Some approximations here:

Dodonpachi DOJ - april 03
R-Type Final - summer 03
Border Down - fall 03
Shiki 2 DC - feb 04
Psyvariar 2 DC - feb 04
Espgaluda - may 04
Gradius 5 - july ? 04 / september us
Giga Wing Generations - may 05
Dragon Blaze - may 05
Trizeal - may 05
Mushihimesama - june ? 05
Raiden 3 - july 05
Ibara - feb 06
Radirgy DC - feb 06
Under Defeat - feb 06

Correct, add, etc.

Known to be missing:
Asian and Korean release dates.
Comic convention-released PC games and etc.
Atari and Activision compilations. Namco and Taito wore me out ;(

For each release date listed, I tried to confirm it with multiple sources. For some dates, this was not possible and instead I went with the date that seemed most likely. For some, I couldn't even comfortably get that far:
Robotech: the Macross Saga (GBA US)
Robotech: the Macross Saga (GBA EU)
Samurai Aces (PS2 EU)
Sol Divide (PS2 EU)
Steel Dragon EX (PS2 EU)
Strike Force Hydra (GBA US)
Strike Force Hydra (GBA EU)
Super Dropzone (GBA US)
Super Dropzone (GBA EU)
Taito Legends Power-Up (PSP EU)
Tengai (PS2 EU)
Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded (PSP EU)
Midway Arcade Treasures (GC EU)
Midway Arcade Treasures (Xbox EU)
Midway Arcade Treasures: Extended Play (PSP EU)
Namco Museum 50th Anniversary Arcade Collection (PC EU)
Namco Museum (Xbox EU)
Namco Museum (GC EU)

Anything else that's missing I probably flat out forgot.

Compared against oxtsu's Chronology of Shooting:

Ikaruga - 8.5 months to DC

Raiden III - 6 months to PS2
Ibara - 8 months to PS2

incognoscente, your dedication is invaluable for this community - thanks!!!

edit: if you aren't willing to do it yourself - I'd add link to your list to my signature. It's just so helpful that I it's nice to have it just a click away :)

edit: what's the difference between pink, blue and bold titles?

Great list!
Exelica looks to be May 06 -> Feb 07 = 9 months to DC.
Karous will be a much less inspiring Nov 06 -> Mar 07 = 4 months to DC, although still the same interval as Milestone's previous release.
Turrican wrote:edit: what's the difference between pink, blue and bold titles?
As near as I can tell--

White = JPN Release
Pink = US Release
Blue = EU Release
Bold = First home release of a game

Looks like blue=EU, red=US, bold=JPN original release, non-bold=JPN re-release or port on a secondary console...

Great list incognoscente! Thanks!

edit: nZero beat me to it.

Thank you for the positive remarks, guys.

Kaspal: Thanks for the offer. If there is demand for adding the Touhou games and others, I know who to ask :)

Wow impressive list, so many good games here, very neatly organized, and easy to read. As for the games I see a lot of them came out in the later winter months, or early fall ( best time to stay in and practice as it's usually cold outside, staying inside toasty warm and with a shmup will keep you nice and comfy), but then again a few came out in summer (though the winter count seems higher than the summer count), so the pattern isn't as predictable as I thought before going through the whole list.

well, the touhou phenomenon its just a lil bit of what gets released at the Comic Markets....

i've been followin them for about 4 years now, and in those years, theres been somethin like 70+ (good and terribly bad) shmups released... whenever i have sometime, ill make a lil list... but, again, i ask someone else to come up with it... i can help to build it tho.

Done, thanks! :-D

I wanted to credit you on the link, but somehow the signature must have a character limit.
