I'm derailing the topic here, though it concerns vids.

I found some Gradius IV vids on youtube, though things seem to be damn slow. Since I've only played the (altered) game on the PSP Gradius Collection, I just need someone to confirm that he is, in fact, playing on an easier setting than default.

I think he is, aye. Ignoring the generous wiggle room he's afforded during most of the usual nasty spots, the boss gives it away. :P

In any case, this is a woefully mean-spirited thread - it's the presence and enthusiasm that counts. You folks might see better videos and the furtherment of your much-coveted competitive spirit if you approach these people with encouragement instead of imperious sneering.

I've already explained where Mills is coming from on this. Look back at my last post.

BTW, why are the two of you using the same avatar? Makes your posts hard to distinguish.

I think it has been said often enough in this thread, but anyway.

The western shmupping scene is small, so I think it's nice to see non "hardcore" players are enjoying this genre too. And sharing this video on youtube and seeing people liking it should be good news for shmup fans.

And I really can't see why it should matter how good someone is in a game. What counts is the fact that he likes the game enough to record his play and host on youtube. He could as well a member of these forums and might or might not be a highscore player. Even if you don't think he plays so well, he is probably enjoying what he is doing. One more shmup fan.

So, please let us not become like most fighting game sites, who judge games and players ONLY by how hardcore they are. I'd like to see the western shmupping scene grow and having a friendly yet sometimes competitive atmosphere. :)

That's at least my opinion.

^That's a fair response Edge, and I agree for the mostpart.

Its just that you've also got to understand the Mill's Mindset, especially when it comes to Strikers.

All of the negative responses to this have been fair, mate. I appreciate the concern that it'd be much more helpful for YouTube to be full of good replays, but are threads like this not simply drawing even more attention to the shite ones?

Idolizing (or appearing to idolize) certain players probably isn't very encouraging for these "scrubs", either!

Trying to pass off average runs as world record attempts is quite another issue, however, and fatal beatings should be administered to all scurvy dogs who propagate such LIES.

Lole, at least we aren't posting disparaging comments on these peoples' vids.

It's all good fun until someone takes it too far or someone calls the care police, omgwf.

Speaking of slowdown/easier modes and stuff, I've seen quite a few touhou vids with significant slowdown, as well as a raiden III vid with slowdown.

Might it be that they run some recording software while playing? When I tried to record a vid like that I had some kind of slowdown, too.

BTW this thread made me want to play a bit Strikers and I made it to 1-4 in Strikers 1945 ... is this any good? About 333000 points. If you now want to shit on me, it would be on-topic!!!

:o Well if your viewed Acidglow on Strikers1945 stage1-1, you should feel pretty proud making it to stage1-4. At least your replay would look better and more appreciated skill wise for the YouTube viewers. :)

If I get some time in the next few weeks I'll post 1st loop clears with all the ships for Strikers 1999 - except the X39. If I can get to 2-5 I'll post that.

Oh, and if I can figure out how to convert a mame replay to a video and that to a youtube video with black bars on the side.

I've always had trouble with the MAME replays of Strikers and Gunbird games, it's like the timing will be off and end up blowing my ship at a daring point where in the original play i actually made it. From then on it will keep playing my commands but the ship will be delayed from respawn time and off track. It's actually kind of fun to watch though, just screws me up for ever showing off input files on those games.

Have you tried clearing the NVRAM file(s) for the game before recording and before playback?

I have replays that I made of each ship clearing the first loop, and they playback fine for me. So it's just a matter of being able to convert them to video and upload them in the proper format to youtube. I've never tried it before.

I remember uploading a really cruddy 360k point replay of stage 1 TUMIKI Fighters.

Man, that wouldn't even pass quality control on my scoring runs nowadays.

I like to post scores on games at which I am semi-proficient, but I still enjoy playing shmups at which I am amatuerish at best. The more people we can get on board, playing shooters, the better.
