Agreed. Those sprites are not only identical to the original game (as has been mentioned) but the shadows beneath the characters don't look like a real graphical effect and the explosions aren't that convincing either.

Also, the level design looks just like level 1 of Gunstar Heros (the Level with pink as the boss).

It's not that they couldn't do a good one with enough effort, but it was clearly going to fail expectations since the prequel runs on a Saturn. I wonder why Treasure decided to ruin their no-sequel policy with a so flawed project.

Treasure never had a no-sequel policy.
I recall seeing an interview with Maegawa stating that they left Konami because they were sick of how all they did was sequels and sequels and more sequels. His motto has always been 'Originality', and I doubt he'd like to see his baby become like the company he despised doing sequels for.
I think they once said they weren't totally opposed to sequels, but that they would only do one if they had enough new ideas to make it significantly different.
Last month's issue of PLAY magazine (Dave rocks!) had an interview with some big Sega honcho that made it sound like Sega is going to come back into the hardware market full-force within the next five years focusing on franchise titles and sequels to boost them back to their old rep.
If you ask me we could be seeing this new Gunstar update on Sega's new system. (!)
Sounds like Sammy's eager to get them back into the hardware market...after all, the days when they had a platform of their own seemed to be when they made the most impressive games.

But they didn't make the most impressive profits. A new Sega console's a nice dream, but it's hugely unlikely to be anything more than a dream for the forseeable future.
