Speaking of heavy memory + saftey zones, Razanbar III (sp?), for PCE, has been kicking my ass lately. I absolutly hated Razanbar II and did not like III at first but the early 90's CD tunes and experimentation Boss fights are growing one me
. The backgrounds are cool 'cause they glow...

Tallarico is a fag; all he does is piss and moan every time a Nintendo game is reviewed because all the games he did music for were on Genesis. Also, he gave the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory game a 9/10.Dylan1CC wrote:Sessler is OK, he can be likeable and seems somewhat balanced (though it has been a long time since I have watched X Play, if he has slammed sprites then my bad). Thats the thing. If you sit a mainstream gamer in front of a fairly modern shooter and proceed to do well at it they tend to be impressed and intrigued. Then they try the game and because they never play shooters they get frustrated quickly and give up.antron wrote:On an encouraging note, when I showed my friends Psyvariar 2 on xbox they all said, "Holy shit, where did you get that game?" You have to take about half of what Adam & Morgan say on that show w/ a grain (or an entire shaker, if you will) of salt. Most of the time it's just them being sardonic because that's the thing to do if you're "cool" when it comes to being a hardcore gamer.Gopher's Ambition wrote:I recall on X-Play, Morgan was practically having an orgasm narcking on 2-D games because of how bad the game she was reviewing was (sorry, can't remember the name - was a contra style shooter that took place on a space station, and you had to wander a maze). She said things like "oh 2D is dead... this game proves that 2D is dead... I just can't believe that they'd make a 2D game... there's nothing left in 2D to be done... 2D is outdated, there's no way a 2D game can be fun anymore..."
About 20 episodes later, R-Type Final and Gradius V both score 4 out 5s.
But yeah, sometimes they're raking on a game for minor flaws does get old.

I will be blunt on one thing, they have been decent as far as reviewers go. if I recall correctly, they gave the metal slug 2 and 3 collection a 4 out of 5. all things considered, they are the BEST of the Metal Slug games, where as they gave the 4 and 5 collection a 2 out of 5. let's be honest here, 4 and 5 weren't exactly the series' strongpoints, it was a bit deserving in my opinion. (though I would consider 5 the shiznit, it's nothing compared to 3.)FRO wrote:You have to take about half of what Adam & Morgan say on that show w/ a grain (or an entire shaker, if you will) of salt. They're incredibly blunt when it comes to reviews, which in my opinion is a good thing. and let's face it, giving Mobile Light Force 2 a bad rating was a good idea considering how butchered a game it is. They atleast give shmups a chance when they come around.

Hi fellow shmuppers:
Sigh... I have come to accept the public's view on shmups as something that's not going to change. As far as I am concerned, they are missing out. While they continue to play the same game with different graphics, I am quite happy to play my shmups, which are entirely differently games with similar graphics.
I think the decline of shmups in North America is akin to the decline of adventure games, which were mainstream, in the early 1990s. Both genres, I am sure, will continue to live in niche markets despite the endless waves of negativity from the general public.
Cheers.

This is the post of the thread here boys and girls, and quite possibly the post of the forum, for damn near the duration of the thing. Everybody here really needs to at least try to understand why it is that the shooters we know and love really were mainstream and loved by nearly all segments of gamers--and now aren't. Because a football player or a cheerleader is more apt to game now has nothing to do with it.Acid King wrote:Thats the thing. There are a lot of shooter lovers who don't love the modern variants either, you know. Case in point, I love Gradius V ten times over infinity more than I really care to play Ikaruga--and I'm more than competent at each title.
Mainstream sucks, you say? How do you account for shooters being mainstream at their golden era? You really think they've lost nothing, since then, but their status?

i have a friend that is pretty "new school" as far as games and stuff go....
I showed him ESP Galuda 2 and he was pretty shocked... he kept talking about how good it looks ect. Then made as many comments on the insane amount of crap being thrown at me with me not dying. He asked if anything was like this was on PS2 so I showed em' galuda one... he said it looked good but not as good as the second one. It was nice to have someone actually be impressed without any coaxing over a shooter.
I got some looks from EB co-workers (use to work there) when I kept getting hyped over Gradius V. "You think you can beat me with that.... Loser" is what I said back after awhile... they had no idea where it came from and it quickly got on their nerves. It evolved into something I liked to repeat endlessly during fighters that we played on the demo machines in the store.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Man, there is a lot of hate for EB Games here. Not all of the sales clerks there are next-gen tards who play crappy games. Hell, I work there. I remember having a nice conversation with a guy who had bought Raiden 3, and he loved it, but was upset that it didn't have the purple weapon from Raiden 2. We then talked about shmups in general and it was a grand old time. I often compliment customers when they purchase an old school game. So yeah, not all of us game clerks out there are so bad. Don't let the retards give you bad impressions of the rest of us.
Also, I often play Cho Ren Sha in the cafeteria, and sometimes people gather behind me and watch as I play. I am not a grand master or anything, but I'm decent. Through people watching me I have gotten a couple of others hooked on it. I have yet to have someone insult me for playing a shmup, but I can see the possibility of it in the future. I look forward to that conversation, since I love shmups and would love defending them.

Our EB manager got mad at me b/c I was telling him the N-gage was a guaranteed flop before it came out. He was quite huffy/puffy about it also. More EB slander.... sorry Gov
Can you guess what I said in response as I picked up a GBA..... "You think you can beat me with that! Loser!!"

Lol!
That's how I show friends these games as well, get them interested at least if not playing.
Show them stuff of me dodging things in say, Mushihime or even better, Death Label, they sorta freak out over how impossible it looks, and then I just sorta say "Meh, it's not THAT hard"
Then they try maybe, and see otherwise

If you want proof, look at the PHFSTGT. No matter how miserable and pathetic the shooter is, it's still possible to have fun playing it.icycalm wrote:The thing with shooters is that it's quite clear to me that they are the best games ever, but I am not yet at the point where I can prove it. Some more choice bites:
"Even, if you were to get past the nonsensical script, silly, unclear mission goals (basically blast everything) and completely undeveloped plot you’ll find that there is very little actual game here."
"Hopefully Capcom will put Giga Wing behind it and put some effort into creating a decent shooter that shows the genre has moved forward since Space Invaders."
"I realize I might not be the most agile pilot, but average gamers will find this to be a bit of overkill. Really, is anyone supposed to survive these battles without dying?"
He never once mentions the reflect force in the entire article, or the scoring system.
For me, the worst possible insult is when people call shooters "mindless". Is there ANY other genre which requires this extreme amount of concentration? It gets to the point where someone entering/leaving the room I'm in can totally throw me off.

No. He, like so many people, have already been ****ed by Halo and Final Fantasy. You very rarely come back from that.Zebra Airforce wrote:Some more choice bites:

Such a stupid review in so many ways. Giga Wing is comparatively easy in a lot of ways, but it's still not an easy game. Unless this person 1cc'd it after a week or so, then he can't call it easy.
Also, not to nit-pick, but I don't think Capcom had anything to do with its production, only its publication. Perhaps they ported it. I still think of it as a Takumi game.
