Anyone else like Gekiridan?

Post by DBH87 »

Just been recently playing my taito legends 2 and found this good shooter, i think its pretty decent today even though it was made in 1992. The music is quite good if a bit samey, it is also fairly hard i think. A shooter with different time periods was a good idea even though you would never guess what year the levels were bar 1942. Anyway i have really got into this game so what are everyone elses thoughts on it?

Not Taito's finest hour (that honor might have to go to RayForce), but certainly a fun game. Graphically, it's a bit sloppy, & it lacks a bit in the design department (less original than it should have been based on the concept), but it's enjoyable nonetheless.

I like Gekirindan for what it is.

Seems to be a tribute shooter of sorts, imo.

Lots of Toaplan references.

Yes, that's what I've always felt. Definitely isn't spectacular, but it is a good game.

It's not a bad game, and I think the music is good, and the time travel theme allows for varity.

I still say it's no better than average.

true, but for some reason it's still fun.
For instance, I love Garegga and all, but the complexity can feel frustrating/boring at times...simplicity always holds out for me in the end, and thus Geki has become one of my most played shmups on the Saturn.
very odd love I have for this game.

Granted, nothing wrong with simplicity, but that's not what I hold against the game...it just never struck me as anything special whatsoever, though there are certainly worse shmups to be played. Though methinks the stupid "2P trick" bugs me most, though similar and equally stupid things have been done on other games too.

It's been mentioned on here a handful of times...basically, for some reason, when you play the game on the 2P side it becomes a good deal easier in terms of overall difficulty. Harebrained stuff like this tends to bug me more than it ought to, I suppose...at least now the game's available relatively cheap on one of the Taito Memories collections, which IIRC got/is getting a "Best" re-release.

*sighs* Hating on this game is like beating up puppies. Kind of lame puppies mind you...certainly not the best puppies ever. Maybe a kinder person would just put the puppies out of their misery, but leave it to people like you--you'd take a whole basket of puppies and throw them down a stairwell over and over.

Really, this is a nice game that isn't spectacular but its design is decent, its music is good, the graphics are nice. It does all the things you'd expect a shooter from that period to do. Don't beat the snot out of it just coz it isn't dodonpachi

We've been trying to put the little buggers out of their miseries for quite some time, actually, but others keep resurrecting them. Who's cruel now? ;)
