Eurogamer is reporting that Sony are about to launch the first PS1 shmup release for their Playstation 3 / Playstation Portable online digital download service. The first shmup release for the Sony Game Archives service is to be Irem's PS1 collection R-Types, featuring near-arcade ports of R-Type I & II.
According to this source, R-Types collection will reportedly be purchasable for around 525 yen (approx US$5), initially only available in Japan. Currently this will be playable only on PSP Firmware 3.0x, after downloading via the PS3 online store. But Sony have plans to also include capabilities for playing Game Archive purchases directly on PS3 in a future PS3 firmware update.
This is a promising sign for possibly other classic PS1 shmups to follow in time, on this new PSP/PS3 game download service.
