Wikimup?

I was wondering how long until this genre got its own wiki, and here it be. Wikipedia itself has some decent STG entries, and I'm interested in seeing how people will expand these with strategy and stuff. Or it'll collect dust. >shrugs<

it's a very good idea, however it would be much cooler if shmups.com went wiki. It really is a letdown to see such a great community be represented by such a crumby site. To me it makes total sense to go wiki, there's people here answering questions, and giving useful information all the time, and yet it gets lost the next week.

It may be crummy now, but if we all contribute & add information to it it could grow quickly. It's a relatively new site, so you can't expect too much yet.

I believe buzzo meant that shmups.com itself was crummy, what with the lack of updates in uh... forever?

Just so's ya know, Wikipedia material IS copyrighted. Lifting articles is not the sort of thing that will make this wiki respectable, and besides, if that's all that's being done then there isn't any reason for the wiki to exist in the first place.

A Wiki doesn't have to be an encyclopedia. Surely one can write different summaries for games than those already in existance, and compile troves of interesting factoids, but those are things that many sites do. What is less common is to find sites with detailed walkthroughs/STs (like those in this very forum), although I think that the Forums work very well for STs (the authors generally know what they're talking about, and incorporate suggestions well - all you need to do is edit).

I hate just dumping on the bad news (I had actually thought I got through it all in the first paragraph, but by the end of the second one I realized that was probably not too positive either), but please consider this to be some constructive criticism. I always like the idea of more community involvement and enthusiasm, but don't compromise your quality, vision, and goals to meet false 'standards.' Copying Wikipedia will be busywork and not terribly fulfililng for anybody.

ALSO: Somebody explain to me why one game is a "dynasty" and another is a "series." Is it related to something illogical like "how old and well liked is this game," is it based on how many companies the series has been palmed off on (i.e. the 19XX games) which is slightly more logical, or what?

Also, some good Wiki formatting stuff: Vulcan Venture should be a redirect page to Gradius II. Gradius II: Gofer no Yabo, if that was an existant page, should also be a redirect.

Re-reading his comment, I see that's probably what he meant...my bad.

As far as copying Wikipedia, that's definitely a no-no. However, article writers should most certainly link to any articles Wikipedia is currently hosting, & what's more, perhaps update the original Wikepedia articles to reference the Wikimup equivalent.
