If you look on the neo geo forums you will see going neo geo MVS is a much cheaper option.
None of those games you mention fetch anywhere near $100 each for cart only and kits are quite commonly available for $100 +
You can buy a consolized MVS unit for about $300 or a supergun and motherboard for about the same amount or less. Plus, the games are exactly the same and if you get a motherboard with a unibios you can play the games in AES mode and use your neo geo AES pads and sticks. The only reason to buy AES games is when your collecting them, since they are collectors items you are paying for the privelege of ownership only.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

A 'consolized' MVS is basically a supergun with a MVS built into it. They are all homemade, there is no official home MVS. Personally I'd just get / make a supergun (I'd go with making it if you have the time, there's lots of good guides out there). Then you can play MVS to your heart's content but also lots of other great JAMMA games...

Or rather its basically an MVS with a supergun built into it.Smithy wrote:A 'consolized' MVS is basically a supergun with a MVS built into it.
IMO you'd be better off getting a supergun and 1 slot MVS board. If your going to be building it yourself its going to be a lot less work. If you plan on buying a setup, it will be quite a bit cheaper because it can be made faster. Plus having a supergun means you can play other JAMMA games too.
Of course if you prefer to have the homecarts, you could probably get the two games and system you want for $2000 or less.
Oh, and there also is an MVS converter for the homecart system. They sell for about $250 or so IIRC. But I've heard they have some compatability issues.

Ah the Phantom-1 converter. I just learned about it. I cant find where its being sold individually, but I found someone selling a Neo Geo AES system, arcade stick, Phantom-1, and about eight MVS games including Blazing Stars for a little over $500 bucks. Sounds like a good deal but its too late. Last night I purchased a Japanese AES system and a converted copy of Blazing Stars. I have confidence in the AES system but the converted game I'm not so sure about. I was desperate and very tired and I just bought it. I hope it works ok with my AES system when I get it. Does anyone know anything about these conversion carts because I have seen a few. They are all under $200 and I've seen alot of good games like the one I bought. Better than spending like $800+ for some of the games I want If they are quality, but Id rather get a Phantom-1.

Are you suggesting Stormwatch that I emulate the Neo Geo to play these games? I have tried emulation of Super Famicom and I have many great games but its just not the same as owning the real game and system. I get a certain satisfaction in owning the offical system and games. I need to look and see the actual hardware and software creating the images I am seein on the screen. Otherwise I feel like I am cheating and I also enjoy collecting games and systems.

Please post the news when you receive your conversion cart. I have been interested in picking up some conversion carts but would like to hear some feelings from one who actually has one. I have a US AES system with 8 games.
US Neo Geo AES is really the worst way to go about enjoying Neo Geo because of the cost. AES is really more of a collectors market where a console MVS is really the best way to play Neo Geo. MVS offers pretty much all games (except a few CD exclusives) where many games did not make it to AES. I only have an AES as it was a childhood dream come true but I am pretty much at a rate where I get one game a year right now.

Neo Geo AES is region free. The hardware actually depicts which language the game will be in - a US console will be in English and a Japan console will have the games in Japanese. Other changes will also occur such as blood in Samurai Shodown on Japanese console and sweat on a US console.Darkfield wrote:Yeah I will definatly post back with my results Sonic R. It is also a child hood dream for me to get this Neo Geo. I cant wait to play it. Do you know if US games work on a Japanese system and vise versa?

I have a consolised US Neo Geo MVS with about 30 games. I'll proberbly pick some more up in the new year as well but I must say it was also a childhood dream of mine to own a Neo as well... weird eh?

MVS Console
Here are some pics of a mvs console to give you an idea, I made this from a four slot mvs board a few years ago. you can use standard Neogeo aes sticks and it plugs in to your tv.

And here it is in action.

I've got a U.S. Gold System, but the only games I've (intentionally) bought were Japanese (hasn't stopped me from picking up a few copies of Sengoku, and Baseball Stars Pro 2 + FF2 US came with the console. I also picked up the JPN version of FF2, and have the game on X68000 as well...yikes).Sonic R wrote:US Neo Geo AES is really the worst way to go about enjoying Neo Geo because of the cost. It looks good enough plugged into a television - barely. Actually, the visuals are crappy enough (a bit blurry and I think dark as well), and the sound is mono; and it's still not as bad as a Genesis 3.

So did I. The only thing keeping me away was the triple-digit cart prices.LSU wrote:Thegreathopper, that is truly one of the most awesome things I have ever seen.
Funny how many of us seem to have had a childhood dream of owning a neo geo. I did too. Haven't quite got there yet though, maybe one day!
With AES prices being many times higher than $200 now, I thank goodness for superguns- you get more options to set when you play on an MVS than a home cart (i.e. killing the checkpoints on Viewpoint by using the Simultaneous 2 Player soft dip). That 4-slot console MVS does look amazing.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Well I finally got my NEOGEO AES and my conversion cart of Blazing Star in the mail. I actually recieved the AES last week but my game was late probably due to holiday mail overload. I have to say that I see now why these games are so collectable, it is the most awesome looking cart and box I have ever seen. The large size just looks powerful! The conversion cart of Blazing Star works great. The case looks exellent and the cart looks flawless. I am pleased.
Some of you think I should have bought a Super Gun and thats fine if you like it but I much prefer the AES console. It just looks nicer to me. And yes the games cost much more but if I wanted to I could just buy a convertor cart and play the MVS games on my AES which I am considering. Still, I have seen some pretty nice AES games under $200 bucks which is expensive but not insane.
I am now a NEOGEO fan for life! I cant wait to get more great games!!

You could always use the headphone jack in the front if you're really pressed about stereo sound (I used to use that for my old MD1 in order to get stereo-sound). Just use a Y adaptor converting from 1/8 inch plug to standard RCA stereo audio connectors.Ed Oscuro wrote:It looks good enough plugged into a television - barely. Thanks for the update! I think I'll look into getting a few conversions such as Pulstar and Blazing Star. The original AES cart prices are rather restrictive.Darkfield wrote:Well I finally got my NEOGEO AES and my conversion cart of Blazing Star in the mail. I am glad you are enjoying your AES as I enjoy mine. The main reason many suggest alternatives to AES is mainly the opportunity to play more games. Price is a major factor when compairing AES to MVS for what is the same game. Like you I am more or less dedicated AES as I am happy with my 8 games which bring me much fun and the few more games I seek can be had for well under $200.
Another thing about NEO GEO is that it seems more geared to 2 player play. Its not a very solitary system but enjoyment can be achieved during solo play especially with shooties.
Have fun! Your a "real" hot dog now!

Load times suck balls on a NGCD, and it seems that some of them have been breaking down (something to do with the laser).
But loading times for shmups and early Neo titles are just fine...other than that, they're graphically accurate with the MVS original and the soundtracks are loads better most of the time (arranged because of the CD).
The library of Neo CD games isn't up to par with MVS/AES, either.

True, but not all of the games have bad loading times, and unless you have to have every Neo Geo game, the Neo Geo CD is not a bad option at all, IMO. If I ever go Neo Geo, that's the route I'll take. I have no desire to spend $400 on a consolised MVS, or pay out for an AES and AES carts. Shame that Blazing Star never made it out on this system, but plenty of other Neo Geo shmups did.shinsage wrote:Load times suck balls on a NGCD, and it seems that some of them have been breaking down (something to do with the laser).
