I've only played it briefly but from what i played i thought it was absolute pap. And i love psikyo games.

Huge hitbox, tight patterns that feel unfair, limited use weapons. No fun.

If you want a psikyo hori play Tengai/Sengoku Blaed (sic)
Number of 1cc's : 5
Now playing: Gunbird

I must admit i put off getting this for my collection for a long while due to all the bad press i'd read about it,but on finally purchasing it i found it to be no where near the turkey i expected.Scrutinise any game enough and you'll find fault and of course it depends on which games you compare it to,but i find taking every game on its own faults and merits works wonders and its by no means the best shooter you'll play, but by far not the worst.
Although it still goes for a pretty penny so unless you've got cash to throw at it i'd buy something with better write ups for the cash you'll pay for it.

If you get Dragon Blaze for the PS2, arguably Psikyo's best game, then you can try out Sol Divide, which comes packaged with it. I don't like SD at all for just the reasons that sjewkestheloon stated.

Thought it sucked but tried it out anyway, spent months practicing enough to beat the 4-hour-long console-exclusive RPG mode in a single sitting (don't make the same mistake in getting the $10 US version, which has the ability to save removed, among other mess-ups and omissions), still thought it sucked, and never played it again.

Its hardly even a shmup! As far as it being an "areal hack n slash" it really sucks.
Overall, not good at all. It could have been great if it played like Forgotten Worlds, as well as Lords of Thunder, which in this case it doesn't even come close.

Are you actually back on the forum or did the overwhelming badness of sol divide bring you back for this single post???

If you play for score, then you are correct in that it is hardly a shmup because for maximum scoring you need to get your final swing to be the kill swing.

It does however get manic in the later stages and you *can* play it like a shmup if you want to (some parts of the later levels are alot easier this way).

Last time I played it was at the end of my "I don't really like shooters" period. Maybe I'd like it now, or something.

Just played it on Mame today. Great game, but very short. Vorg is the best character.

I like the stage-select mode in the test menu as well.

It's a fantastic game, if you just wanna relax, credit feed and look a gorgeous graphics! :)

On the other hand, if you're looking to get any sort of "serious" shmup enjoyment out of it - you definitely won't!

PCEFX's encounter with Psikyo's Sol Divide arcade game...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

The first time I laid my eyes on this exquisite Psikyo arcade game by the name of 'Sol Divide', I was drawn by the cool opening intro. It does feature cool digitized flame/fire effects...cool at the time for a horizontal-based side-scrolling shmup. ^_~

Upon inserting a quarter and pressing 'Start', it was a cool Psikyo arcade shmup game...I haven't heard of this game before and why not? (This was back in January of 2000 and vowed to myself to get/scour for the PSX import title.) I did manage to score an original Psikyo produced PSX title of Sol Divide for a mere 3,900 yen in late March 2000 -- it was the very last copy at this out-of-the-way Japanese game shop somewhere tucked in the nooks & crannies of Akihabara district of Tokyo. ^_~

The Psikyo Sol Divide arcade PCB does fetch a pretty penny -- especially the USA country version as not many were made... ^_~

The USA PSX version of Sol Divide from XSGames is very infamous in that much of the original Japanese PSX version's content is removed and thus isn't accessible from the "get-go". If you really want to play Sol Divide on the PSX, then my suggestion to pick up the original JPN version as nothing is missing in the first place.....yes, the "arcade" version of Sol Divide is included on this original JPN version btw..... ^_~

Most likely frame cuts for both ports.

Game is too short and meh.

Sol Divide is not that bad. I actually enjoyed it. Of course it's nothing when comparing to other Psikyo shooters such as Strikers 1945 series & Sengoku Blade.

I just read this post again, and I still agree with what I said before...Sol-Divide sucks.
Yep, I own the original PS1 version. No, its not for sale, but it still sucks. Trust me... Why? Because there are simply too many badass shmups that are out there that you haven't even played yet!!!

Sol-Divide is simply a very poor shooter to say the least.
No offense to those that like it. It does have its "moments"...but those are often few and far between.
Play Forgotten Worlds, or Lords of Thunder...not to mention Hyper Duel!

Hello Mike. I've been meaning to say hello to you from you're earlier post regarding the DAM website.
Its good to see that your still keeping it alive.
One of my favorite websites...it seems we always had similar tastes in video games.
