DOJ got the better port (including replays, a nice practice mode, etc.), but Mushi, while its port quality is only "okay," got a "Best" release which can be had for about half the price.
Both are good games, similar in some ways but different in others: both have variations on the "chaining" mechanic, and can offer quite a challenge, but the presentation and atmosphere are completely different.
I like both: imo you'll have fun with either.

DOJ gets my vote as well. I'm one of those players that loves getting a beatdown though.
I have to admit that I didn't really care for Mushi too much at first but it really grew on me. Both are great but the quality of DOJ's port is just so much better.
With Mushi's Best release though, I'd say save a little bit longer if you have to and get both.

Uhm, no. Mushi reinvented the chain, is technical, deep, beautiful in any way. To me. And we must add that with 3 modes and a more "open" scoring system this game is better for starters.Rob wrote:DOJ is classic and you like DDP, so easy choice. That other game is highly skippable unless you really like purple.
However, I must admit that I really enjoy purple, you got me

They're both great. If you like pain, get DOJ. If you want a more accessible game, get Mushi. Mushi Original is good for casual play, and there are more challenging modes if you feel like delving deeper. The two modes in DOJ consist of Crazy Hard and WTF I'm Dead Already?
If you really can't decide between them now, but plan to get both eventually, I'd say to buy DOJ first. Mushi has recently been re-released at budget, so it should be easily available for a while. DOJ on the other hand has been out for a long time at full price and doesn't look like it's getting a budget re-release, so you might want to grab that before the pressing sells out.

For some reason I really like DOJ. It is an absolutely punishing game that pretty much tells you from the opening level that you aren't good enough. Yes, that sort of challenge is really welcome for some reason--in part I suppose because the execution is so damn good.
Mushi I've never felt anything special for. Just another shooter from cave (obviously some disagree...)

While I like both, I must admit that I have a slight preference for DOJ. It is a much better port and is packed with extas (ESPgaluda got the same excellent treatment). The port of Mushi, while passable, seems rushed in comparison.
However, the most important reason I would pick DOJ is availability (to echo Daigohji's response). Its rather hard to find beyond Playasia.com, which is where I scored my copy. The port is around three years old, after all. I could see DOJ becoming a real collectors item in the near future, whereas Mushi is relatively easy to grab--provided that you don't mind a Best version. You can grab a copy of it for around $30, verses $60-$70 for DOJ.

DOJ is too much like fan service for the hardcore Cave fanboys. Yeah, I said it. The chaining is absolutely fascist, and the difficulty is too high on default. Mushi is a more rounded game, with optional smackdown mode in addition to two very different normal modes.
DOJ did get the better quality port though. They're about at opposite ends of the Cave spectrum in play style, it really does depend on what sort of player you are. If you want a brutally hard revision of existing DDP play, which will demand section memorisation and tactical use of bombs/hypers, DOJ is probably the one. Mushihimesama is a little more freeflow, in normal modes. Sure, there's a best route, but not sticking to it doesn't necessarily force death.
