Your shmup for 2006!

Post by SPACE HARRIER »

Jeeezzz,Another year has (almost) passed..so It's time to look back what made this year so special for you and me
Being a BIG fan of the sony PSP..I was very pleased that they released the GRADIUS COLLECTION..mainly because I'm an oldskool gamer!
I grew up with those old shmups...snif snif..I'm almost crying..some of the best shmupmoments of my life.. :D

> = = Anyway... so the best new shmup of 2006 is the GRADIUS COLLECTION.
> = = And the best old shmup of this year is ZERO GUNNER for the DC,finally bought it for 5€ at a fleamarket.. 8)

So what's your BIG catch of 2006?

TNT,

Well lemme think...

New shmup, well I'd say that the PS2 port of Ibara with Arrange mode (and a little Arcade) is what I got the most out of. Honorable mentions for Shikigami no Shiro 3, Under Defeat, and Radilgy.

Old shmup of the year for me is Truxton. I'm terrible at it but I've had a lot of fun playing it recently.

Going to be really, really boring and Raiden III as it only came out over here in the UK this year. I really like old shcool shooters and I think eveytime I play Raiden III even though I get my butt handed to me I still have a smile on my face when I put down the pad. Not many games put a smile on my face these days let alone leave a lasting impression after I finished playing it.

Out of the older games I would proberbly say R-Type Delta as I've not played it before this year but managed to pick up a copy of the game for £1.50 at my local Gamestation which was nice. R-Type Delta is now proberbly my favourate R-Type and that's saying something since I really loved the series to begin with.

Best shmup for me this year was Under Defeat. Everytime there's news about the Dreamcast getting yet another release/port, it's always great news for me, even if it DOES take a whole year.

Best old shmups for me this year was Darius Gaiden and G Darius. No need to explain why. They've both been sitting on my shelf, until I brought them back out again in (I think) July. I'm still playing them.

The best new one was Under Defeat. However, I got so many good older shmups this year it's really hard to say which one is the best. The one that impressed me most was Recca (got a loose cart in April for a very good price).

My BIG catch this year was either Recca or a new and sealed copy of Brikinger, I can't decide. Both made me very happy.

Under Defeat

...and since they're not new...Gradius Collection.

Under Defeat was the first game in a long time to challenge and motivate me.

Before I bought Gradius Collection, I had played all of the games for a combined total of maybe 15 minutes. Now, I've already 1cc'd Gradius 1 and the collection is quickly taking up more time than even Lumines 2.

lemme see...

For the DC, Under Defeat... thats a pretty cool game... i love it.
for the PSP, Gradious Collecion... nice pack we got there
for the PS2 (i dont own one, but a friend of mine does), Ibara, havent played it much, but i like the way it plays.
for the PC, Shiki3 ... cant play it the way its meant to be, but i really like this game... need to get a better VGA so that i can enjoy it the right way.

Best New: Gradius Collection, i got me to buy a PSP.

Best Old (tie): Twin Cobra, the game destroys my confidence, but I love it anyway/ Parodius series, parody of Gradius, really funny touches, not to mention the OH! powerdown.

New: Under Defeat

Old: I picked up Radiant Silvergun recently, need I say more?

Old runner up: Dodonpachi... I just like this game so much I felt it needed to be added in somehow.

For a new one it has to be the PAL release Homura which i've put a good few hours into and enjoyed greatly. Nice art style and lots of bullet make stu a happy boy.

For olds it's got to be Fire Shark which i've nearly 2 looped and Bangaioh for the DC which i found for a couple of quid and played non stop. In fact i think i might revisit Bangaioh soon again to rack up some scores, and maybe track down the N64 version.
Number of 1cc's : 5

Still sorting out old games. I have a lot of favorites. I tend to like wasting times with the ones you can use a gimmick on, like Vasra and the Offense ship from Blazing Star.

EDIT: I canNOT forget about the latest additions I bought for my Saturn this year, thanks to some members here. I'm still having, loads of fun with Batsugun, Hyper Duel, Blast Wing & Soukyugurentai. These are all top notch shmups.

The most played shmup for me in 06 was easily Aero Fighters 2. It came with my Neo Geo cabinet and is 10 times more awsome than I remember it being many years ago. The characters are some of the best in any shooter.

As for new shmups in 06. I haven't played any of them.

Looking forward to an ESPRaDe PCB in 07, and trying out trigger heart and last hope on DC

Had the most fun with Ketsui this year, and will continue on with that. The nicest "new" shmup for me was Under Defeat
