Help! It won't go away!

Post by U K Narayan »

Unfortunately my sister has this infatuation with anything that represents 50 Cent. Personally I hate the bastard, and I hate his music, too.

Now I have more of a reason to hate him.

Do you want to know why?

Well, it's because of THIS!

Image

My sister installed this desktop software, unfortunately it installed on every user. I uninstalled the program, but this desktop icon remains.

Whenever I try to remove it, IT WILL NOT REMOVE; it just opens the "Open with. . ." menu.

If anyone could help me out, I'd be grateful.

PS: 50 Cent sucks.

Maybe you could locate the folder it was installed to and remove all the files from there manually!? You could remove the desktop icon by going to the "desktop" folder and simply delete it there. If it won't allow itself to be deleted try and see if it's read only.

If this doesn't work I'd say try and do a system recovery to the system specs before the installation. (be careful though as you might change back "wanted" changes to the system as well).

I am no expert on this, but that's what I would try!

Try starting up in Safe Mode and removing it.

Alternatively, go to Start > Run > type MSconfig and hit enter, go to the Startup tab, find the bastard in the checkbox list and uncheck it. Then restart the computer (and ignore the warning that shows up on next startup).

Hmm. I've hardly used Windows XP, but, here's what I would try:
  • Select, hold shift and press delete, or
  • Use the command prompt, navigate to the desktop directory (wherever that is), type del "50 Cent G-Unit DeskSite" (remember the quotes) and press enter, or
  • Make your sister remove it. It's not her own PC, right?
  • If all else fails:
    1. Move your WINAMP icon to the right of the 50-Cent icon.
    2. Right-click desktop, select "line up icons" (or however it is).
    3. Select both icons (50 Cent and WINAMP).
    4. Click and drag the WINAMP icon back to its usual place, thus moving the 50 Cent icon off of the desktop.
    5. Right-click desktop and "line up icons" again. At least in Windows 9x, the icons will be lined up but any that are off of the desktop will remain off of the desktop. 8)
There's probably a resource on the Web somewhere for removing unwanted desktop icons, but, this is off the top of my head. Good luck!

Edit: It might also be considered part of the "Web desktop" -- You might try going into the "Display" control panel (or whatever it is in XP; right-click desktop and go to properties?), and checking the "Web" tab (if it has one) to see if there is anything related in there.

(Man, I really need to gain some experience with XP so that I can give clearer advice in these situations!)

You can try seeing if Ad-aware or Spybot will remove it.

Actually, all I had to do was perform the desktop clean-up. That took care of it.

Thanks anyway. :D

I agree.

I would think that probably just hid it from view or something, I've never used that utility so I wouldn't know though. Best to use msconfig as a previous poster mentioned.

We are walking a fine line of political correctness with this post.

Yeah, he is kinda cute. At any rate thanks for the compliment. There are some more if you use google image search...my favourites are the ones where his eyes are upside-down U's though and there are only a couple of those.
