What about finding out that in Ikaruga, your hitbox is so small that you can squeeze between two of those indestructible red boxes in Chapter 2?

Back in Jan 1992, I got a Sega Genesis after several years of using a CGA powered PC (pic). And that week, I went out to Blockbuster to rent some games. At that time, all of the reviewers used Thunderforce III as the bunchmark for shmups so when I saw it, I rented it for the weekend. And for the whole weekend, it would hand me my butt after about 20 seconds. And each time it did that, I'd go, "WTF!"

I got better later on.

The first time I played Ray Crisis, I was pretty amazed at the level "Consciousness", with that huge liquid cylinder you when into. I was like "WTF" when I first saw that. An excellent example of top notch graphics in a PSX shmup.

Thunder Force V, fighting the ship from TFIV. Craziness!

Game Tengoku. Especially Saturn mode. The RPG? Mahjong? Karaoke?! *but I'll be damned if that isn't one of the catchiest things in all of shmupdom*

Seeing the moon crack open in Metal Black. Actually, most of Metal Black.

Most anything in the Parodius games.

Salamander 2's first boss.

Final boss' music in Blast Wind. Sheer gold.

Final boss of Hyper Duel.

Xiga in Radiant Silvergun.

And... thats all I got right na.

Actually, the hitbox of the ship isn't so small. It's just that the boxes (there is no indestructable red box alongside another, just alongside destructable boxes by the way) also have a small hitbox so that you can squeeze between.

But for a good score, you have to chain that boxes, not to squeeze through =)

Remembered this from a while back while rediscovering some of the older shoot-em-up's that I used to play when I was younger.

Boogie Wings

Seriously, the play mechinics are so wacky and the Evil Santa boss is worth inserting a credit in to the machine alone. It's a shame because a holiday park near me used to have this arcade cab in it but they got rid of it which is a shame.

But to get a dot eater rank without dying (I may try this for fun some day), you'd have to squeeze through. I actually didnt' know you could do this.

While technically off topic, since it's a bullet pattern thing, but the above post made me think of it. I what the fucked when I accidentally squeezed through one of the streams of lasers at Chapter 4-2 in Ikaruga. The part where there's that big disc surrounded by the 4 sections of wall, and the disc is spraying streams of bullets while slowly rotating and popcorn enemies come to circle around? Yeah, I accidentally slipped through one of the bullet streams untouched... THAT's what enlightened me to the Ikaruga hitbox size. I stopped, blinked, asked "what the fuck?" and died in the confusion. So I still think it's on topic, but whatever, there you go.

Castle Shikigami 2 translation gets a big WTF as well as an LOL from me. Note I normally dislike internet accronyms, but... For the sake of the topic I'll let it slide -_^

The Striker series: Bosses turning into weird ass robots!

Yeah. I think this was in one of the Strikers games, but the generic-looking plane boss that turns its propellers up when its wings are shredded and moves them around like weird robot arms scared the hell out of me the first time I saw it.

That's G-Darius saddest ending indeed.

The Bydo babies in R-type Delta also freak me out. Last week, I was playing on my PS2, and somehow the data wasn't loaded properly, giving me a green and black R13 Cerberus.

HATE HATE HATE Einhander! Volks Gasmask my ass!!!
uh, you get that on Easy, not hard. Hard is a red Endymion (or Astraea) with unlimited weapon ammo (999 anyway. that's close enough. :P )

I don't quite think that there's enough of a massive WTF to contain all of "Psyche Metal: The Bleeding". that game's just really bizarre.
getting to the true final boss in Cho Ren Sha. I was shocked and amazed by that boss several times. And to be perfectly honest, it's the one boss that really shows off the sheer awesome of having a little boss suddenly pop out a huge set of guns from nowhere. I love flamboyant displays like that.

I don't get what's so WTF about Parodius. I guess I'm a little numbed by japanese weirdness though, because I've seen way too much of it.

I don't know if that's so sad, they turned into the force of the creation of life or something.

I thought the WTF was when they turned into a hawk, I was like, "WTF?!?"

Also the "best" ending of RayStorm, when they say that everything has disappeared but they don't tell you why. You get that one when you beat it on 13 Ships Mode.

Silly one, but when I heard SAR - Search and Rescue music (okay, just samples) in Alpha Mission II.

Alright, maybe that's only funny to me. Moving right along...

No, that's them being erased from existence by the explotion, enjoying the the last taste of humanity before they return to nothingness.

And the "hawk" is a metaphor for that, allthough they sacrificed themselfs, it was not in vain, and the Silver Hawk will live on.

Actually, Gynoug (MD) has a very awesome dick boss. And a giant brass head that fires snot(?) from its nose at you. Apart from the fact you play an angel whose wings get cut off when he gets hit.
Thinking about it, this whole game is one long WTF moment...

I also like Hakugei's (Progear's Level 2 boss) final attack wave. It's pretty funny, in a "ZOMG IM GONNA DIE!!1one" kind of way.

The scene in Wisp Lisp Heehaw were you fight a pair of boobs is really strange, but that whole game is pretty weird for that matter.

After the glowing force from The Embryon engulfs them, it engulfs a lifeless dead moon, which now has blue sky and water . . and the credits roll.

I like to think our heroes became part of that force, but it's open to interpretation.

When they turn into a hawk for no real reason, it's just weird.

I hope we didn't ruin it for anyone. -_-

So I'm playing G Darius earlier today, and I get to one of the big red fish boss (I forget which stage it was). I'm fighting him and all, when all of the sudden he busts out three laser cannons from his side. And it so happened that I had captured an enemy, with a capture ball, and had not used him for anything yet. So we're charging our lasers simultaneously and when he fired, I fired. He left off all three of hhis lasers one after another, while I was still in the struggle. My blue laser became so huge that it filled up the entire screen. I've played this boss many times before and had some awesome laser battles with it, but none came close to the WTFness! of this one. If only you could've seen the expression on my face. It was like  , but with my mouth open.
