to me, Chaos Field is gaming minimalism at it's finest. i can totally get into people disliking it though. first time i played it (at eretsua's place), i thought it was a generic execution of a bad idea, and quickly forgot about it again. months later we played it again, and then i suddenly "got the point" and fell in love with it. now it totally blows my mind every time i play it.

i think CF is way underrated and i think that has a lot to do with people's expectations of a shmup. kinda like when you put on a minimalist techno cd expecting euphoric trance, and then are disappointed by the lack of wow-factor. unlike most shmups, CF doesn't try to wow anyone. i think the color palette alone makes that pretty clear. instead it aims for maximum zone-out effect: nothing stands out and there are no big events to break up the flow. i guess you can call that boring, but if you have a WeakSpot for minimalism then it's stunningly beautiful.

hi, by the way, i'm new, sorry for the rambling. now i'll go post in Trading Station to see if anyone's willing to sell me that first Chaos Field remix single, cause that's actually why i signed up here. ^-^

I know Neon already quoted this, but this quote nearly invalidates the whole thread.

I agree with others that this could have been a meaningful thread if some discussion had been brought up about the qualities (or lack there of) of Chaos Field.

That said however, I'm stuck on the fence over the cube. I still like it for playing GBA games, but perhaps I should get a better controller for it just to pick up Ikaruga/Chaos Field...hmmm...

Did Radilgy come out domestically?

Erm, I´ve used the GC d-pad for Ikaruga because I lacked any alternative (the analog stick is much worse for it without the proper training in using such a stick), and it worked well for me - for short periods. Well, I´d rather have this one on my DS lite - at least it´s responsive and does diagonals without needing to crush the pad into the casing. Enough complained.

I already clocked about 60 Hours on it and still counting. I usually only plays old school shooters, but this one got me hooked. You should try spending more time w/ it before rushing into a negative opinion.

it's a very intense score based shmup. 1st impressions aren't exaclty very reliable sources to judged such a game with.

but if you feel you've seen it all then that's cool.

I hated Batrider in the beginning. Some games NEED to be played for a while to reveal their genius - even thought it´s a bit problematic to play a game because you MIGHT start liking it after some time; why play a game if you don´t like it first time playing it? Well, I guess it depends on your attitude towards things in general. The thrill that comes from playing a game with an open mind and much ambition is totally different from just consuming them. Good games give back if you put effort in them.

No, it's unusable.
That would be your opinion. I use the stock GC controller to play both Ikaruga & Chaos Field, & I don't have any problems with it. Granted, after some time it becomes a bit uncomfortable, but the same could be said for the original NES pad as well. Please do the rest of us a favor & stop putting forth your opinion as fact. Saying "It's unusable as far as I'm concerned" would be more beneficial to the group as a whole. I realize that the majority opinion on this board is that the GC controller sucks for shmups (& most other stuff, for that matter), but I happen to like it & I know that there are others that share my opinion.

Now, to keep this post OT, I actually like Chaos Field. I would agree that it's a "pick up & play" title. I do agree w/ most, however, that it was probably not an example of great design & feels a bit rushed; despite that, I feel it's fun & I like the sword implementation (I thought it was almost as cool as the sword in Brave Blade). Graphically, the game is a bit lacking (sort of bland), but I like the soundtrack, & I think it's fun overall.

i meant that in the sense that the first few credits don't give a fair impression of the game. it is hard to have fun with it when you don't understand the system unlike say a cave shooter.
maybe "pick up and play" doesn't mean what i thought. i agree with you that it's good game to play for short sessions.

I disagree and I'm confident that it's unusable.

All of the next-gen consoles have worthless dpads in their standard controllers, but the GC one is especially stupid. I forgive Nintendo, however, because the Wii's classic controller appears to be the very first analog controller with a dpad that isn't stupid. I say 'appears' because I haven't actually used it-- I've just been looking at it through the clear packaging that it comes in. And since Metal Slug is delayed, there's no telling when I'll get to use it.

Who says Rob stating it like a fact is a bad thing? So what? If you are so confident that he is wrong then it should be no skin off your back. That sticks and stones thing?

Personally, I think the pad is a bit retarded, but like ganson said, none of them this (last?) generation are particularly special.

What's wrong w/ the D-pad on the PS2 & PS3 controllers? It's the same as the PS1 D-pad. I realize I'm in the minority on this, but I find the PSX D-pad style to be quite usable. I don't own a PSX joystick, & I play all my PSX & PS2 shmups this way w/ little or no problems. As long as you can adjust to the difference in the D-pad from one controller to another, it's usable (in my opinion).

My point is, not everyone agrees with Rob. Majority notwithstanding, it's still opinion.

I stand by my stance that it's strictly opinion, as is my opinion that the GC D-pad is not that bad & is perfectly usable. I played nothing but the Mega Man Collection for months & didn't suffer from hand cramping or other such problems because the D-pad is fine, despite it's miniature size in comparison w/ other D-pads.

No kidding. I've been gone a month and there a few newcomers I am irritated with.

And yes, ruling out any future Milestone games just because you don't like Chaos Field is shortsighted. To give you an interesting alternate opinion, I still haven't played CF but I do own the DC rev of Rajirugi and it's a very enjoyable shooter. But to each their own.

I got used to the GC dpad, but that doesn't mean its ideal. I managed to 1LC Chaos Field with it, so it isn't too terrible. I find that I can hit diagonals more reliably with it than with the normal PS2 pad.

My favourite pad is the Saturn PS2 pad - I think its even better than the original Saturn pad. I think I'll pick up a ps2-to-cube adapter so I can use it with Radio Allergy when it comes out in February.
bVork it up!
