1. 2 many djs: As heard on radio soulwax pt 2.
One of the best mashup discs I've ever heard. When ya got The Breeders, Salt 'n Pepa, Garbage, Royksopp, Skee Lo, Detroit Grand Pubahs, Electric 6, 10cc, Destiny's Child, New Order, and Dolly Parton on the same disk, ya got a genre crisis. Most vocals on tracks are paired with music from other popular tracks. It's done so well. The disk is probably the easiest of the series to find, but there are many other soulwax mashups worth listening on, even if the quality of effort isn't as good.
2. MC Lars: Self Titled (The Laptop EP)
(White) Rap. But intellegent, modernized...and hell...he raps about friggin' Edgar Allen Poe!
3. Hardcore Heaven 2
Happy Hardcore without much of the 'happy' to fuck it all up. 3 disk set. DJ Sy, DJ Brisk, and Kevin Energy each have their own mix. The Sy disks has a lot of female vocals, and is the least of the 3. Brisk and Kevin Energy hold it down though. No chipmunks, (retard) MCs, or any other embarassing shit. "Chav" music without the Chavs. Best used for road trips. The very best for road trips.
4. Johnny Cash: American IV - The Man Comes Around
While I hate the general "music is only for lyrics" mentality, I make rare exceptions for "enchanting mesmerizing vocals." A third of the songs are a little too slow, but if all else fails, you have great Depeche Mode and NIN covers to fall back on.

5. Muse: Absolution
Kinda like moderized dramatic music. Butterflies & Hurricanes is uplifting and a great "project tackling theme." While Stockholm Syndrome gets the hard-hitters credit.
6. Straylight Run: Self Titled
All I can think of here is "mature emo"..if..that's possible. With messages that rally a sort of theme that says "quit fucking complaining", it earns my uniqueness credit. Oh, and I like the piano.
7. The Avalanches: Since I Left You
It's like...being trapped in old happy 50s tv shows. A well-streamed continuous mix that spins into somethin' trancy. Samples, samples, samples, and samples. "WTF" may be uttered a few times. Track down Frontier Psychiatrist for a proper sample.
8. Lotus: Nomad
I'm not very good at describing this sort of thing. But I look at it like pretty easy-listening faster-paced jazzy percussion-oriented rock. Or I can call it psychadelic rock or something. I like it 'cause it's slightly drum-n-bassy at times. I loved the group after being introduced to a live show. But this studio album is shit compared to their live performance. That's how good this band & album are.

9. Rick Ross: Port of Miami
Meh, once a year one may find himself dabbling in the money, hos, drugs, ghettos, and clubs that almost every god damn rap album released weekly. This one serves its purpose. And there's catchiness.
10. Rammstein: Mutter
Almost every song is great! Yay for Germany.
11. DJ Venom: Raise the Volume 2
Hard House with fun references...like....Guns 'n Roses..and....Ninja Gaiden..and...Journey..and...a Speak & Spell.
12. Hybrid: Wide Angle
Techno with a russian orchestra. Hell yes!
The only instance where I'd recommend NOT to buy the special edition version. It takes a good track from the studio album and moves it to the short 2nd disk.

Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark -- garage black metal, just what I need
Vladislav Delay - Entain -- trying to find an electronic niche to enjoy, sticking to minimal stuff for now
Oren Ambarchi - Grapes From the Estate
Keith Fullerton Whitman - Playthroughs -- ^both drone, I have some trouble telling them apart, but they're nice
Immolation - Close to a World Below. I hope I don't jinx it, but I think it's my new favorite. It was a close race between it and Unholy Cult, but in the end CTAWB feels more even, complete and has a much stronger closing track. Amazing album. Also making time for Failures for Gods and Here in After on the side.

Lately been bumping the old Midnite album Unpolish a lot. If you like deep roots reggae, this is a must. A much overlooked classic.
Giving the new Akon album a couple listen too. Much more pop than his last album not so rappy anymore. And featured artists on nearly every track. But its growing on me.
I just downloaded a bunch of albums that I haven't heard yet. The Chinese Assassin Musik 4 is a really cool compilation IMO.

I've went back to this one this weekend:
The Invisible Pyramid Elegy Box - been going through all of the discs, really fantastic.
and Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime
Has anyone else had discoloration (rings) on their CDs? I think the cold/temperature fluctuations has damaged them at least superficially, which is evident on the discs not covered in artwork (Yank Crime). They play fine for now, but eh.
I'm working on a much smaller set (only 2 discs, woohoo!) that is to much the same effect. Tons of huge tracks, lots of great texture. More artists that are completely unknown. A new band that no one has heard called Oaxacan is completely primal--sound like they record in a cave. Improvised like jazz, but they aren't jazz. Brutal guitar and weird-inhuman vocals. Totally invalidates society. I want to hear more bands like this!Rob wrote: The Invisible Pyramid Elegy Box - been going through all of the discs, really fantastic.
As far as disc discololartion--I've had dvds do this and stop working. It does happen. Certain discs just go bad. I think the issue has to do with whether they are truly 100% sealed or if there is any room to allow contamination/oxidation. Laser Discs (which were just too big to allow for proper sealage) suffered from quite a bit o' the old laser rot.

So is the whole album worth checking out? I always liked that 'Finished Symphony' single. Brainbug is decent orchestrated techno although in many instances a little too clean for my taste (has that phony cheesy sound, dunno how to describe)12. Hybrid: Wide Angle
Currently listening to:
Primus - Sailing the Seas of Cheese
Any Ramones, Shonen Knife
The Cure - whichever one has just like heaven
So can anyone recommend some really good pop that I would not have heard of. Pop being like that song I Want you to want Me. Catchy shit
*pre-orders* That description works for me.CMoon wrote:I'm working on a much smaller set (only 2 discs, woohoo!) that is to much the same effect.
Unrest's Perfect Teeth has quite a few supremely catchy pop-rock songs. "Light Command" is one of my favorites.Neon wrote: So can anyone recommend some really good pop that I would not have heard of. Pop being like that song I Want you to want Me. Catchy shit
Have you heard Buzzcocks' Singles Going Steady?

Yeah I know brainbug. I get what you're talkin' about.Neon wrote:So is the whole album worth checking out? I always liked that 'Finished Symphony' single. Fully liking the disc depends if you're just in it for the orchestra backings.
Orchestra-ed great tracks:
Finished Symphony
Altitude (Red Square Reprise)
Snyper
Kid 2000 [w/female vocals]
If I Survive [w/female vocals]
General trance good tracks: (I wouldn't call phony-cheesy but it's up for judgement)
Beachcoma
Theme From Wide Angle
Kill City
Altitude [yes, there's two]
I only bought the disk knowing on Finished Symphony. I still usually buy disks on a 2-song rule or I trust in an artist's mix ability. 9-out-of-13 was a great turnout!
Why yes. ...Yes I can.Neon wrote:So can anyone recommend some really good pop that I would not have heard of. Pop being like that song I Want you to want Me. Catchy shit
(single tracks)
South Normal - Eloquently Hopeful
The Lashes - New Best Friend
SikSik Nation - Power Couples
Flashlight Brown - Ready to Roll
F-Stop - Let Go
My thumbs up to you, sir.Pirate1019 wrote:Kamelot: Karma

I have an ongoing thread at gamengai that has some offbeat CDs that I'm very thankful for. Thus far they're all ambient, but I'll be adding some other crazy shit in there soon.

Melodies From Mars by Aphex Twin! If anyone likes weirdo music like I do, you should check this album out. The only problem is that this album never went into full production, but thanks to the internet, you can easily download it via p2p software. (Don't give me any beef about illegal downloads; this is an unreleased album to begin with!)

I doubt Richard James gives a shit. He's such a down to Earth guy. He played ni a friend of mine's bar once. Maximum capacity: About 300, and that's pushing it. He said, "These gigs are usually more sorted.". He's all about the music & the party.(Don't give me any beef about illegal downloads; this is an unreleased album to begin with!)

Listening to some stuff I picked up for super cheap at the Tower records going out of business sale (RIP). All recommended:
Sing-Sing - "Sing-Sing and I" (<--GREAT album)
Isan - "Plans drawn in pencil"
Field Mice - "Skywriting"
Trembling Blue Stars - "Lips that taste of tears"
Also a CDR of some Mojave 3 "out of tune" demos of unreleased tunes. Good stuff. Otherwise I've been listening to random selections from my DAT live tape collection (some shows I taped myself on my sony D8 DAT recorder). Currently shows by Slowdive, Ride, Chapterhouse, Smashing Orange, and Trembling Blue Stars are getting the most play.
