Funny coincidence since I just posted a stage 12 replay of this game to Youtube. It was on the hardest difficulty btw, why don't we have that on this list? :D Well, it wasn't quite a highscore run though.

By the way are there any differences between the japan and the world version? I always thought the japanese version was harder, but then noticed that the world version just has the easy difficulty as default. Perhaps we should just stick to one version and one difficulty?

Confirmed now easy is world default difficulty and hardest is only availble on japan, score added

You might want to remove my score since I sort of used save states just to get me to stage 12 quickly and easily. I didn't care at all about the score, I just wanted to make a survival demonstration. I'll do the highscore run separately and probably with the default difficulty too, since that's what most people choose anyway I think.

This is getting pretty complicated. It seems that the both version's default difficulties seem to vary, depending on the Mame version. At least on the latest Mame they both have Normal as default, and the world version has Hardest too. At any rate, I still think we should stick just to the normal difficulty like it always goes, as I think not many people will post to this board anyway.

First boss is extremely easy once you know what to do with your 3-way laser

rules are changed now, one version, one difficulty and no continues ;)

Pretty old score, not so good but anyway. :)

Edge - 285'600 - 1-3

Actually it could have been 1-4 as well. I just remember that I lost very often in stage 3. But offcourse you also score not too bad in this stage so dying there isn't too bad for the score.

My 18 year old R Type II score;

DEL - 720,000 - ST11

I didn't go for the 2-ALL on this one. My friend ARC did get it though. I doubt he wrote his score down.

Finally beat the first loop on one credit.
Final result:
Sam - 573,300 - 2-3

I am not entirely sure which version it was, the romset is rtype2 and I checked the dip switches which said the difficulty was set to normal.

Ruldra - 308,300 - 1-5

I'm close to beating the first loop of this, but I don't know how to get past the second half of stage 6 where all those yellow crawlers show up. Is there any way to deal with that part safely?

I think the trickiest bit is when a wall of crawlers comes from the right. Just before they appear, you want to be at the bottom left, with the Force attached in front. pic

Tap right. As long as you don't adjust your vertical position, the enemy bullets should either miss or hit the Force. pic

Before you reach the right edge, attach the Force to the back of your ship. pic
Tap left when it's safe, then put the Force in front again.

Just before the tunnel, crawlers will come in from the left and right. Here, it's probably best to stay near the top for a good while. Make sure to preserve some of those destroyable spore-like things in the center of the screen; they'll absorb a lot of bullets. pic

Boss safe spot
It's not enough to simply enter the first embryo's chamber. If you don't position the front tip of your ship inside the embryo, you'll probably get hit by a red homing shot.

That works perfectly, thanks :)

I was able to no-miss to stage 6 and almost reached the tunnel, but apparently one of the bullets went through the spores and killed me. Too bad recovering is almost impossible on stages 5 and 6.

I can manage every part of the game now, I should beat the loop in a few days.

Done

Ruldra - 559,100 - 2-2

Died once in the second half of stage 6, but amazingly I was still able to reach the last boss and kill him. Memorizing where each enemy appears was quite helpful.

Not sure if I'm gonna keep playing though...not really fond of 2nd loops.

I need to find a good method for the loop 2 Rios fight. It seems to have more random elements than the rest of the game combined. :(

Is that the stage 4 boss? You could throw the Force at him before he starts moving and focus on dodging. Works wonders in the 1st loop at least.

That's been my preferred method in the first loop, but it's much riskier in the second. The boss fires a near-constant stream of homing missiles (and arrowheads and 5-way spreads). Without the Force to protect me, I often end up dying to a homing missile that approaches at an upward or downward angle. If I keep the Force, the fight lasts an uncomfortably long time.

I recently learned that the grey weapon from level three kills Rios almost instantly. Grey makes the stages a lot harder, so this isn't a very attractive option.

The fourth boss is pretty harmless if you don't have any qualms about max autofire (delay 1 in MAME). At the start of the fight, horizontally align your ship with the core and detach the Force. Shortly before the boss fires its first green laser spread, nudge up-left. It should die around this point (in either loop).

Image Image

1. Initial position. It's fine if your ship is a tad lower.
2. About two seconds after the boss first takes damage, tap up-left once to place your ship above the horizontal green lasers. Note the 10k point increase. :)

I'm kicking myself for not trying this earlier. Autofire delay 3 is ideal for most of the game, so I didn't think about trying delay 1 on Rios until recently.

I was originally going to work on my 1-5 and 2-5 routes today, but I decided to play full runs on the spur of the moment. Three hours later, I got this:

saucykobold | 925,900 | ALL

.inp (recorded with WolfMAME Plus 0.83)

I sacrificed three of my spare lives at the final checkpoint, getting about 60k each time. Then I accidentally died twice before clearing. I probably won't try to improve on this, as I feel like jumping from game to game for a while.
