I'm one of those that gets brain aneurisms whenever I try to decide which I like best for shmups, PS2, DC, or Saturn. Especially for only shmups, because I actually like my DC better overall, and the PS2 is pretty bleh overall, but for shmups? Oy, it's such a tossup.

I think I'll have to go with the PC ^_^ I have a fair number of doujins, but I still need to get Mame up and running.

all the good saturn shmups are also on PSX, and PSX has some better shmups not to mention a larger shmup list. PS2 has the current best shmup support, ahem CAVE.

Last time I checked Radiant Silvergun, Battle Garegga, Hyper Duel, Blast Wind, Batsugun, Cotton 2, Cotton Boomerang, and Game Tengoku had not been ported. Maybe I missed this happening?

Quoted for truth. The ps2 has definitely come a long way and it certainly is one of the best shmup consoles, but there are still way too many great games on other consoles. There is no way I could chose just one.

Discussions of this topic always suck imo because
(i) people often lump the PS1 library together with the PS2 library in voting for PS2
(ii) the masses who vote for Saturn make no effort to state what sets it apart from PS1. I love Garegga (though atm I prefer Ibara), but it really is the only game on the system that compares with the Raidens. After that it seems just a matter of taste. Gradius Gaiden, Zanac Neo, Harmful Park, Toaplan Shooting Battle v.1, Einhander, R-Type Delta, R-Types... wtf? My tastes are squarely on the PS1 side.

i'd keep my PS2 since most of the good games for the Saturn have been emulated so the only thing i'd miss is playing them on a television.

My favorite Saturn shooters are oddly the two that saw US release, Rayforce and Darius Gaiden. I think all of those mid-90s shooters are inferior to what was released just after that by the same companies (97-00). In the end the Saturn really has no unique identity, it's basically just a time capsule for arcade shooters of the time (incomplete as it is and with not so great ports at times). At least in PS's case, there were some high quality console-exclusives and it seems to have the last great selection of side-scrolling shooters. Raiden DX's port should have the status of Radiant Silvergun, but who would really want that? Leave the truly great games to the fans.

Of course I would vote for DC.

I know I did, the poll does say "system" and not "library". To me that means all PS2 shooters + all PS1 shooters - PS1 shooters glitched on PS2. I think I'd have voted for the Dreamcast otherwise.

Is this guy confused or something?

Battle fuggin Garegga, Radiant Silvergun, Batsugun, and Layer Section; just for starters, rape just about every PS1 shooter out there. What does the PS1 have on the Saturn? Einhander and a smoother version of DDP and Strikers 1945 II... what else?
What more can I say I wouldn't be here today if the old school didn't pave the way.

Here's what I wrote just a few posts above:

With the exception of Garegga, I like each of the games I list here better than any of the games you list for Saturn.

Can't imagine why. ;)

Every time this topic comes up, I'm torn between the Saturn and PS2...probably will forever remain that way. Not like I care that much since I own both, heh heh.

If you read the question that way, then the question makes no sense.
For on that way of reading the question you could not list PS1 as an option in the voting. You cannot say that PS1 library > PS1 library + PS2 library. You could say PS1 library = PS1 + PS2, if you thought that the latter adds nothing significant. But who's going to say that? (Granted, a couple PS1 games, like Toaplan Shooting, do not run properly on PS2. But that can't be the point of adding PS1 to the list of voting options.) So you have misread the question-- and this happens every time we have this discussion.

Because it wouldn't be true ;)

Quite willfully, I assure you my dear professor. This question comes up quite a bit in various forms as you've noted, and I chose the easiest route of interpretation of this particular poll. I assume a disclaimer of entertainment purposes only on forum polls, the discussion is usually fun though!

Good point! And I might add on your behalf that my "misread" is too strong. After all, he does say "best console", not best library.

Harmful Park was terribly boring IMO... since i have it on the DC... or at least some weird emulation of it. I think someone from here sent it to me along with another PS1 shooter running on the DC... but I don't remember what it was since I never play them since they both sucked.

So ha.

I thought Layer Section wound up on one of those Taito collections on PS2 though? Thats why I didn't list it in my list.

Granted, as far as I'm concerned Radiant Silvergun + Tecno Soft's offering >>>> most other shmup libraries by themselves. I think the PC-Engine CD stuff would definitely stand against that though. Oh... and I guess the Dreamcast what with Border Down and Mars Matrix.

And Ikaruga, Zero Gunner 2, Radirgy, and Under Defeat (at least for me, I don't know what the general consensus on these is). And while I've heard mediocre things about it, Trigger Heart Exelica looks really fun to me, so that could be added to the list come February. Toss in Bangai-O, Cannon Spike, and Rez if you count those, depsite not quite being traditional shooters, but I suppose that would just complicate things since the Saturn has the PD's and the PSX has who knows what.

I did vote for the Saturn, but after thinking about it for awhile, the PSX shmup selection is actually very good.

For a system which is not the greatest for 2D gaming, the PSX did a great job of hosting really good shmups on the system.

Better ports of Strikers 1945 II, Raystorm, the Pachis, Sonic Wings Special, and In The Hunt? The Playstation had better ports of these games than the Saturn.

Love Raiden, then you can have near arcade perfect ports of Raiden 1 + 2, and DX on the PSX.

Love the Konami shmups, then you can have all the great Deluxe Packs on your Playstation and the PSX only Gradius Gaiden.

Love the Complie shmups, then you have Zanac X Zanac on your PSX.

Love good looking polygon shmups, you have Night Raid, Einhander, G Darius, Raystorm and R-Type Delta.

So having a PSX for shmups isn't bad at all.

My answer will always be the Saturn. There's no need to explain why.
