A few consoles were left out due to apparent lack of popularity, my lack of experience with them, and "poll option" limitations (Xbox, MSX etc). Don't hate, just list your system if it's not an option. If a similiar thread exists that I missed (excluding the Top 25), vote again!

[options were limited to listings in the Xenocide files]

My vote=saturn

Although I've read through many threads and have a general idea, I'm curious to see which console is the most popular on this particular site...

Mine's the Megadrive for sheer quantity of quality games and glut of ones that, although not great, i can still get a lot of enjoyment from. Most other consoles i tend to like a few games a lot and not bother with the rest.

Plus the Megadrive 6 button pad has my favourite d pad ever.

If that's the case, lock it and throw me a link; I did a quick search before posting and am searching again ATM.

Its hard for me to choose between Dreamcast, Saturn and PS2. I love the cave-shooters on the PS2 but I also like any other shooter on DC and SAT

Anyway, I chosed the Saturn because of Batsugun, Radiant Silvergun, Layer Section and and and

PS1 for me, but DC, PS2, and Saturn are also essential. Earlier systems can be fun, but I prefer to play proper verts and I only play them in tate format so these earlier systems have limited value for me.

I voted Saturn, with dreamcast as a close second. If you include MAME though, then it's a different story. I'm getting a PS2 in a couple weeks so it will probably be up there as well.

Agreed. Even though, yeah, it isn´t a console. If there was only one SHMUP, it would be Batrider.

Xbox 360 (assuming there are ports, which isn't that clear yet) if I can't have a PC.

The others work or don't based on:

1.) Are there various types of controllers available - PS2 style dual sticks AND classic eight-way joysticks?

2.) Can it run MAME? (It's no good if the system is limited only to games from a certain period.)

3.) That system's specific library of titles.

Personally, I spend the most time with the Mega Drive/Genesis. Saturn is great too for Taito love.

Also, some of my personal favorites are the home PCs the X68000 and the FM Towns for their great ports of arcade titles (and remixed soundtracks!)

My vote for the PS2 - simply due to the fact it's the system I have the most shmups for.
But close second/third the DC/Saturn. Pretty close to call

lol..maybe i'm just blind? I got my vote on Xbox and MameXboxPlus (sp) : P. It runs most stuff darn near perfect from teh genny/snes timeframe, and alot of other things darn near close. There's even plenty of arcade games it will run. There are adapters and the possibility of adapters for any system you'd ever need to have (even if some have to be frankensteined).

As far as mostly unmodifed systems go..Genny/MGD for nostaglia's sake, PS2 (lately) because it can also do my R-Types/Delta AND shattered soldier (along with all of the givens : P), and a Saturn in the third spot.

Best Option PS2=PSX and PS2 shooters.

all the good saturn shmups are also on PSX, and PSX has some better shmups not to mention a larger shmup list. PS2 has the current best shmup support, ahem CAVE.

Dreamcast would be next in lline
