Play Magazine gives Red Star a 9.0!...
Well I read that very same article in PLAY magazine and I can't say for a 2 page cover that there was much in the way of actual game-play description. Mostly it was talk about how fast certain characters moved and the overall aesthetics. I can say this much, it's slated for November and today is the 29th with zero news elsewhere on this game so perhaps PLAY knows something we don't...
Whoops, seems like the rumours are true!

This was my biggest problem with the review. There wasn't a single word about the playmechanics. Saying that "...it plays just like a Treasure game..." doesn't mean anything. It's a mindlessly vague comment that I really should have come to expect from Halverson.Limbrooke wrote:Well I read that very same article in PLAY magazine and I can't say for a 2 page cover that there was much in the way of actual game-play description. He just mumbles on about irrelevant crap in his reviews without really delving deep into the mechanics and play system.
Then again, this is the man who gave impossibly high scores to games like Battle Monsters, Blinx, and Turok 3 of all things...

OMFG!!!!!Then again, this is the man who gave impossibly high scores to games like Battle Monsters
BATTLE MONSTERS ?!?!
he needs to be commited
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

This should speak to Halverson's credibility.

Diehard Gamefan Magazine - December 1993 - Volume 2 -Issue 1
After braving the stormy skies of New York city, Kid Fan emerged with the first Atari Jaguar awarded to a game publication. After ripping open the Fed Ex box, we all gathered around the first 64 bit game system and plunked in Cybermorph...I got to play. 24 hours later, long after everyone else (except for my trusty Quadra operator) had left I emerged, totally fulfilled, with the strange feeling that after playing video Games for 9 years I had just played the first "real one". No longer am I tied down to going from point A to point B, I could go anywhere, anytime, and interact with crafts and characters all over each of fifty planets, for as long as I wanted. After rescuing my allotment of pods I can survey the world, taking out remaining enemies, playing with different viewpoints and examining structures. Each level is a different type of rescue mission requiring a completely new strategy than the last. Some moons are totally hostile while others require intense exploration and passive gameplay. I played for 3 hours to complete the first eight moons, then surprisingly met a boss on the ninth. At that point (I'm used to 16 bit games) I figured it was over. But I was wrong. Eight more appeared that required massive study to conquer. Then, after another twelve hours of engulfing gameplay, I reached the end once again, fought two huge gunships and figured, for sure, that was it. Again, I was wrong. Eight more planets appeared that I am still, two days later, studying.
IT turns out that there are fifty planets! Making this game, one that doesn't even nick the hardware, the longest I have ever played. All 3D, all rendering on the fly, filled with vivid, brilliant colors and detailed polygon enemies, that seem aware of my presence-I am thrilled with this game. So now, for me the face of gaming has totally changed. Now, I must imagine games like this that make use of the Jag's full potential. Texture mapped, rendering on the fly RPG's are now possible- games with huge worlds to explore are on the horizon. Action, shooting, role playing, adventure, the Jag will have it all! No Putt, Putt's, no Bird's Life, just solid inventive 64- bit games from programmers with imagination. This game was made by ATD, who's ATD? Whoever they are, they sure know how to make games. They got inside my head and that's what it's all about. Will everyone who plays Cybermorph feel as I do?...probably not. There are those, (I've already met some), who will turn it on, fly in to a planet, think they're just playing another shooter, die for sure, and exclaim...this is 64 bit? To those boneheads-I must say; you have to look deeper than that, this is the first game! It was probably started before the 64 bit processor housed inside was even invented. Look at the creativity, the sound, the intelligence. Cybermorph has great music in the intro, but the game itself whispers only the surreal sounds of each planet. The sounds of approaching missles, the rumbling of approaching transport vehicles, the hum of your thrusters, that's all you here and rightfully so- music would only interfere. In closing, I can only say that, with the Jaguar, Atari has won our support. The new machine is made here, in the highest quality I have ever seen and looks fantastic. Support? They will have it, because we all will own this system, at least most of our readers will. And you guys alone can spell success for a new system. Atari is back, come pet the cat.

Even though XS Games hasn't updated their site it appears the developer, Jack of All Games, seems to be on track and again the January 1st release date is also slated much like on EB Games. When it's during normal hours I think I'll call up and see what info they have.

Thanks for the update; I do indeed hope that that release date is correct.Limbrooke wrote:http://www.jackofallgames.com/games_ite ... 2&pltfrm=4

Man, none of the games that I wanted to come out this year made it: Raiden III, Super Paper Mario (got bumped to the Wii, with no release date) US release of Taito Legends 2, and GCN Kirby Adventure.

Called both XS and JackofAllGames and actually spoke to someone.
JackofAllGames:
What I derived from here is what I should have already known, wherein they are a distributor and being a subsidiary of Take2 have little influence in projects they handle as far as actual release information. Basically, the date on the site is as much as they're aware of but it's only tenative at this point.
XS Games:
Since they don't have a main info line, I spoke with the first representive on the first extension offered (2). I'm quite shocked to have spoke with someone hear, even during day hours since my last two calls were all answering machines throughout the directory.
XSRep "Hello, are there any questions I can help you with?"
Lim "Yes, actually I'm calling up essentially since your website hasn't been updated in very long time and since 'The Red Star' is under your supervision for an upcoming release I wanted to know more from the source."
XS "Yeah, we've been planning on updating the website by the end of this year to [promote] new software.
Lim "Oh, that's good, I think your website hasn't been updated in over a year so new is welcome. Regarding information, my main question is on 'The Red Star' which you took over from Acclaim studios around 2004."
XS "Supposedly."
Lim "Haha, yeah that's about all the information I have, from the internet of course. With these things you never know."
XS "Well, of course what I'll tell you is limited. Right now we are considering our options on TRS and as to what direction the company is headed in right now. Perhaps that gives you an idea."
Lim "I understand, you need keep a certain level of secrecy. That or you don't want to be releasing unconfirmed information."
XS "Exactly, so after the mentioned release date on other sites for TRS more information will be availible and if we are to go ahead with a release at a time in the future."
Definitely the more interesting conversation.

Thanks for that; we may yet see Raiden III over here! I certainly can't wait for their website update!Limbrooke wrote:Called both XS and JackofAllGames and actually spoke to someone.![]()

Once when I actually got a hold of someone there, I think he was one of only about 6-8 people, so XS definately could use more staff.

I'm not holding my breath for this anymore.... to bad, hope i'm surprised. of well, that's what usenet and torrents are for. that's what always burns me, how companys go after downloading like mad dogs yet make it incredibly difficult to actually buy something you WANT!!
10 to 20 years from now I bet if it weren't for all the downloaders and horders, half the back catalouge of early gaming history would be lost.
I've never really understood why these places wouldn't just take online preorders and only manufacture whats been paid for. I had heard way back konami was going to do something similar with gradius gaiden, salamander deluxe ect when the PS1 was much younger. Could have been complete BS but i do remember reading that.

Nuff said.
Also worth noting is that PlayStation US site lists it too. April 24th.

The Red Star has shipped according to Game Stop!
I have reserved this game at TRU and will hopefully be picking it up after work tomorrow!
Gamestop was dum dum and not allowing for reserve on this game
What is point of offering reserve when they discriminate on titles such as these. Look hard this may be tough one to find?

Eugenics: you know it's right!
I do have it. It's alot like gun spike in ways. You deffinately have to use your hand to hand attacks along with your guns. It actually has a decent combo system for a game like this; pop ups ect. You can level up your guns (3 in total, could be remembering that wrong maybe 4?) and attacks, life ect.
There is some deffinate shooter elements with bullet hell and patterns later on. I haven't beat it yet but there is a hori shooter stage that's fun also... possibly more later?
The bosses and stages can be very challenging as the game progresses. The grafx are pretty decent for a game like this also esp considering it's age. It's deffinately oldschool play wise and is worth 20.00, to me anyway.

Looking at the videos this seems to be a no-brainer to pick up.
Any idea about length of gameplay? It has to be longer than cannon spike, right?

Toys'R'Us. Good idea. I should probably PO there too since they at least keep the new games sealed...Sonic R wrote:I have reserved this game at TRU and will hopefully be picking it up after work tomorrow!
Otherwise since Monday all the EB's in my area say it's shipped since, A, it's not in stock, and B, they have no date in the computer meaning it's on the way.
