Getting your daily fix
Curious as to what particular shooters you play on a daily basis and your reasons for doing so...
For me:
Mars Matrix-high score/unlocking
Radiant Silvergun-memorization/chains
Soukyugurentai-still trying to 1CC
Batsugun-score/pure exhilaration
I play some of these before bed every night and I'm not so sure it's a good idea, considering these sessions tend to excite and stress me at the same time which naturally doesn't assist going to sleep...

Yep, playing very intense videogames before bed seems to cause/aggravate insomnia. The recommended alternative is something like linear turn-based RPGs, which have a coma-inducing quality to them, almost like the classic method of reading a novel to prepare the mind for sleep...lynchesque wrote:I play some of these before bed every night and I'm not so sure it's a good idea, considering these sessions tend to excite and stress me at the same time which naturally doesn't assist going to sleep...

I also can't play shmups before bedtime. But for some strange reason, watching superplays/replays always makes me extremely tired, even if itsin the middle of the day...so I recommend trying this before bed if you still need a fix.Thunder Force wrote: Yep, playing very intense videogames before bed seems to cause/aggravate insomnia.

kinda strange as im trying to get into mushimesama at the moment and i was watching the superplay to try and get the hang of the button mashing, getting really tired watching the DVD, paused it and played a round to get my pep-up then watching some more DVD

Advance Wars had this coma-inducing quality to me. Unforunately, a friend made me play this with him some time ago, and I hard a hard time concentrating on stopping him from bombing my ass into oblivion for two LONG hours.Thunder Force wrote: linear turn-based RPGs, which have a coma-inducing quality to them
But true, when I play shmups before bedtime, it seems to be still on in my brain, hearing the music, seeing the gameplay...horrible.
As for the daily fix, I am trying to get into Batrider again after being sick of it for several months, and maybe Mars Matrix too. I abandoned all hope of getting into DDP again, it just seems so slow and boring compared to those two other shmups. I sucked at it anyway.

That seems to be a good way of practicing actually.sven666 wrote:

Daily fix for me is playing a few stages of Radirgy (DC).
Dunno what it is about this game, but the atmosphere and music always put me in a good mood.
I suppose it's the scoring system that has me hooked (keeping that multiplier up during boss battles is addicting for me) either that or I'm just a huge fan of Milestone's limited, but excellent catalog of games.

I play on a daily basis whatever I'm playing for score but... On game, not morelynchesque wrote:Curious as to what particular shooters you play on a daily basis and your reasons for doing so...
Other games are just to entertain/distract myself when I'm concentrated on a single game.

You do know that there are discs with data saves right?lynchesque wrote:Mars Matrix-high score/unlocking
I uploaded a save for Mars Matrix and it had everything enabled but the RGB color option. And that is the option I'd really like to check out.
Anyone have a save that could be burned on cd? I don't have the data coder cable to upload to the DC.

Mars Matrix save discs? Official things, perchance? Oooh... Do you have more info..?

My little 2-year old son seems to really like sittign down next to me and watching me play shmups in the evening. The last couple of nights it's been Blast Wind, and both times it sent him to sleep within ten minutes! Maybe the fast motion and flashing colours have a kind of hypnotising effect? Or maybe I'm just a really boring player.lynchesque wrote:I play some of these before bed every night and I'm not so sure it's a good idea, considering these sessions tend to excite and stress me at the same time which naturally doesn't assist going to sleep...

When I said "Curious as to what particular shooters you play on a daily basis and your reasons for doing so..." I really didn't make myself clear. I was wondering why people come back to a certain game even if they've cleared all the stages et cetera.
For example, I've beaten dodonpachi and souky but I still enjoy just going through the motions in those two games; it's not just the 1CC goal or high score improvemnent that's bringing me back. Not really sure why I like them so much...Guess it's a hard question to answer.
I've spent more money on games in the shoot-em-up genre than any other, solely for the reason that the replay value is endless. As well as the fact that a great shmup gets my blood pumping like no other.

Every once in awhile I'll have a go through Space Megaforce/Super Aleste, even though I've cleared it several times and you really can't play it "for score" very much...granted, I do like the game "for what it is," but I guess it also has the nostalgic value of being one of the games that really got me "into" shmups at the beginning.
It's also one of the few shmups that I have actually beaten, most others I'm still trying to clear for the first time, heh heh.

Edit:
um....I...sorta....accidently....topped the high scores already....so...er...I got another project somewhere

Agreed. A round of Lunar: SSSC or Final Fantasy VII right before bed will usually do the trick for me. I find playing shmups right before I sleep is not a good idea, nor is ignoring the mid-late evening yawns & staying up to play that "one more round" or watch "one more tv show".Thunder Force wrote:Yep, playing very intense videogames before bed seems to cause/aggravate insomnia. Under Defeat and ESPGALUDA: Trying to 1cc them.
If I don't feel like playing seriously, I'll play Radiant Silvergun (though I haven't YEt, since it just came in today), Perfect Cherry Blossom, or Dodonpachi. These are the ones that I WILL be taking more seriously once I get my 1cc's on UD and/or ESP.

My shmup experiences are limited to the arcades, but they are a nice relief when your stubborn ego finally gives up challenging this guy on KOF (like plonked in 8+ credits
), knowing full well that his reflexes and intuition are way better than yours.
Full of anger at the embarasment, you head to the Raiden III/Macross game machines to heal that wounded ego and forget past miseries. And having regained some pride in completing them, you return back to KOF on a new quest for glory.
