My favorite acronym misreading is QFT = quit fucking trying. When I first saw people quoting posts with just that as a response I thought that's what it meant. And liked it better that way.Acid King wrote:I always interpret it as Fuck The World. Quit Fucking Trolling seems to be another popular misinterpretation. I've seen some strange arguments pop up over that one.Rob wrote:My favorite acronym misreading is QFT = quit fucking trying. I thought I'd perform thread necromancy instead of creating a new thread for such a trivial question.
At the end of the first stage (when the boss is exploding) I was bored one time, and was spamming fire just to see how fast I could make the machine gun fire... "put put." Anyways, as I was doing so, this text appears at the top of the screen in Japanese. This happens every time I spam the button on the first boss death scene (haven't tried earlier in the stage), but I can't get it to work anywhere else.
What is it and what does it say? Anyone know?

So, in essence, G.Rev's way of saying: "Hold down the Shot Button for auto-fire, retard."CIT wrote:We recently discussed this in another forum.
It basically says, "while holding down the fire button your shot will automatically rapid-fire".
Also, looking at the kill time on that shot reminds me that I still have loads of trouble nailing that 3-rocket kill against that boss. I normally have to use 4 rockets regardless of which loop it is. I just have a tendancy to not drill one of the sides enough leaving the boss with a smidgen of health after the third rocket. :/

Late joining the party.
I like that while stop firing and waiting for the charge shot in UD the enemies don't become too overwhelming. In Strikers 1945 say if I was charging up the charge shot for the P-38 by the time it's ready the screen will be full of drones and crap.
Likes: How the bullet shells are falling from your copter when you are firing.
Dislikes: How your rocket misfires sometimes.
I actually wish stage two would be longer. I wanted to fight more ships in that battleship group. Something like two submarines, four destroyers, two cruisers, battleship and main battleship, and maybe a hovercraft here and there. But then I am a sucker for sea theme stages.

Enemy placement is pretty damn deliberate in the game. Of course, increasing the rank also increases bonus enemies... but the game is designed with very slight lulls in the action in order to allow your weapon pod time to recharge for the next wave.IlMrm wrote:I like that while stop firing and waiting for the charge shot in UD the enemies don't become too overwhelming. There are tons of minute details in the game. Spend some time in the replay mode and rotate the camera to the reverse angle to see some hidden details.IlMrm wrote: Likes: How the bullet shells are falling from your copter when you are firing.

As for the rocket misfire, make sure that you spend a brief second lining-up and maintaining your direction on a target when you deploy it. Also, make sure the the rocket has room to fire... it can fire downward at almost a 60 degree angle, but you really shouldn't let it get that close to a ground-target since you run the risk of over-shooting.
The targeting reticle is actually one reason why I really hate playing this game in anything other than VGA. The single pixel-width crosshair is blurry through S-Video and almost invisible through composite, however, it has 100% clarity through VGA, making it much easier to recognize what target is in your sights.
Considering stage 2 has the best soundtrack next to stage 5, I agree... but part of the reason for the slightly shorter stage length is the fact that the boss is something of a marathon in comparison to the others (save stage 5).IlMrm wrote: I actually wish stage two would be longer. Sure, why the hell not join in.
I like Border Down and Under Defeat.
I agree with the sentiment that level 1 in UD is TOO LONG with not enough going on. The 1st level difficulty dilemma is something that comes up again and again. I'd so much rather have a short training level that you can skip out of.
Graphics look like shit? D00ds, where are you coming from???
Anyway, I like the gameplay of UD, but it isn't my favorite shmup. By having a really spartan scoring engine and no power-ups, UD have made a minimalist shooter that I could see not appealing to a lot of people. Especially given how rich with ideas Border Down is.
And I think at this late point in the game I have no problem saying I like ZG2 better than UD, but I also think they are very different and each have their own merits.

Actually, I think stage 1-1 presents the player with a really good introduction on how to effectively utilize the weapon pods. The difficulty shouldn't matter since the focus is on how to effectively score (the difficulty ramps up plenty through the additional 9 levels).CMoon wrote:I agree with the sentiment that level 1 in UD is TOO LONG with not enough going on. Now I tend to have a good chuckle when I see the little option tried to make up its mind, then juke away and shoot a rocket to nowhere.Kiken wrote: As for the rocket misfire, make sure that you spend a brief second lining-up and maintaining your direction on a target when you deploy it. Minus the spartan scoring engine part; whatever that means, but Ikaruga certainly has a much MUCH more interesting and complex scoring system than UD. Which is just to kill key big targets or clusters of enemies with your weapon pod: read rocket. It's also less boring overall -_^ What kills me in UD is the pacing. I know it's deliberate, and fairly well done to allow good use of the weapon pods, but it's just too slow for me. Not enough bullets either. Once you learn what to kill when, the game starts to get far too easy.Kiken wrote:Read: IkarugaCMoon wrote: By having a really spartan scoring engine and no power-ups, UD have made a minimalist shooter that I could see not appealing to a lot of people.
However, it IS very good if you just want to blow stuff up. Since stuff blows up real pretty in Under Defeat =D

Yeah, I agree with that for the first couple levels, but I think later on the game really forces you to dodge a lot while your rockets and such recharge. The game isn't one of the harder shmups by any stretch, but the second loop still completely destroys me =) Check it out if you haven't; the game even lets you start on 2-1.Arvandor wrote:What kills me in UD is the pacing. I LOVE Under Defeat. It's probably been my favorite recent shooter, and I can't really think of anything about the game that needs changing.
Some people complain about the fact that it's reliant on the weapon pod for scoring and survival. Well, Ikaruga is dependent on the color switching and subsequent chaining, and I seem to be the only one who thinks that was lame, so ;p
