It's a RAP!

Image

It arrived today, and as expected, customs completely ignored it (thank you shoppingmalljapan!). This thing is pretty big, but quite light. Initial impressions of the controls are good: the stick does seem to have quite a throw on it, but only time will tell whether or not a more sensitive stick will be necessary. The default buttons are kinda squishy, and I'll have to change them, as they don't seem sensitive enough to my tastes.

Going to run a couple of tests with Ibara and Brave Blade to really get a feel for this stick. Mmmmmm...

Looks great Icarus! Give the stick some time, you'll discover you only need a quick, soft tap to make precise movements. And yeah, get rid of those buttons! Pop in some Sanwas and you'll be set.

So anyone want to confirm on my initial question regarding why HRAPv2 cannot be swapped with Seimitsu stick?

It's due to the different mounting plate with the HRAPv2. Won't fit a Seimitsu unless you drill and modify the casing.

Well that's crap. I wish I knew that before I bought my brand new HRAP last spring. I guess it's either find another HRAPv1 or a HRAPSE ( :lol: ).

That's kinda why I asked first, and went to YAJ for my HRAP. Better to have the ability to fit any kind of stick in when required without having to fiddle with the casing. ^_-

You don't say... :roll:
It's not like my HRAP is a total write-off anyway since I can always put a replacement Sanwa in when the time comes and the buttons aren't permanent either. I doubt I'll go through with getting another stick anytime soon since when I was looking I sought the HRAPSE in the first place (having the shorter throw Seimitsu stock) with no luck.

Well of course. If stick sensitivity isn't too much of an issue then any version of the HRAP will be fine, and you can still change the stick to something besides the LS-32 when needed. I'm extremely fussy about my controller options, however, therefore there was only one option in this case - get a version of the HRAP that can be properly customised to my tastes.

I saw a HRAP on YAJ for about 35,000Y though. I think it was some kind of limited edition.

Indeed... quite funny too.

There's a HRAPSA (Special Addition/Full-out Sanwa model) on there right now for about ¥14,000 IIRC. I can't say the Seimitsu model (SE/Special Edition) comes up as often. The gents at akihabarashop.com were going to land me a HRAPSE but then they stopped replying to my emails for some reason and that was my green light to get a HRAPv2. It was cheap enough too at $70 BNS off P-A.

This info might be of use to some... an Ultimarc Mag Stick (very tight, precise, perfect for shmups) will just about fit in a HRAP1 (v.2) with some minor modification to the mounting plate holes, and cutting the last 2 or 3 threads off the end of the stick (flush with the retaining nut).

I like you. If you do decide to do this, tell us how it works out.

I've already done it! I also fitted Happ Competition buttons. I might still be crappy at playing shmups, but there's no way I can blame this controller 8)

The original stick (Sanwa) has a 5 pin plug connector, which you'll need to cut off. The wiring colour scheme is as follows...

Black = Ground
Red = Up
Orange = Down
Yellow = Right
Green = Left

The mounting holes almost line up. I just extended them into a slot (on the Mag Stick plate). It's a tough metal though, so a decent drill bit is required.

For the LS-32-01 (or 40-01) in ver.B, the only 'problem' is you'll need a flat plate instead of the default step plate with the stick.

For RAP ver.B and SA, Hori changed the control panel mounting plate (aka baseplate, not talking about the stick mounting plate) to a single-way and more compact size. The stick height will be shorter than normal with LS-32 + flat plate. Seimitsu LS-55-01 and 56-01 are compact in size and taller shaft height, conforming to Sanwa JLF, so it installs to ver.B/SA RAP's without any plate changes and retains the standard stick height. It's all bolt-on.

-height difference : LS-32-01 w/flat plate in 'ver.B'(actually SA) vs normal-

-relevant thread-

On another note, contrary to what many think, the buttons in RAP are already arcade spec. The switches are the same as Seimitsu's standard (Alps), and overall feel of the button is near identical to their PS-14-GN. It's a stiffer touch, more distinct "off/on", compared to Sanwa OBSF buttons.

How much clearance is there when the stick is finally mounted? I would assume not nearly enough for a Plus model of T-Stik. Knowing that one will fit in there might just make me pick one of these up.

You mentioned the LS-32-01 since it has the 5pin universal connector right? Does that mean the normal LS-32 isn't possible to swap?
Good to know that using the flat plate from the LS-32 is still a possibility.
However, it's also handy to know the height difference, making it a good idea for the potential of using LS-55-01 with flat plate instead. I really appreciate your input. :)

That's nice, I might have to grab me one of those. With room for a PS2 too eh...

Alps? Nope, Seimitsu uses Tokai switches which are also found on the Namco PS1 arcade stick and Neo Geo stick (and many others, I'm sure). It's worth noting that these switches can have PCB-mount terminals while Sanwa's don't.

That's right, you can use the LS-32 as well, but the 5-pin connector on the RAP would have to be changed to seperate connection with a ground loop.

Thanks for the good word, Limbrooke.

So I was wrong about the brand name. Thanks for sharing. However the buttons on the RAP are still near identical feeling to Seimitsu PS-14-GN, that's the main point. And they are arcade spec switches, the same model as Seimitsu uses. Only the first Tokai switch on that page is PCB mount terminals, which is not what is used for RAP or Seimitsu's arcade lineup. It's not really worth noting, btw.

The Tekken 5 HRAP does use PCB-mount Tokai switches so if someone wants to replace the stock buttons with some fancy Seimitsu models they can just swap the buttons while keeping the stock switches: this ensures total arcade/Seimitsu feel and allows for a nice mod where you don't have to dump the Hori PCB and hack a pad as I've seen people do. The Tokai PCB-mount switches ARE part of the Seimitsu arcade catalog (used for mahjong panels) so it's handy that they can be orderd from Seimitsu if one needs them. Why would anyone need them? Well, for the above-mentioned T5 mod for instance, in case you break one while desoldering it or for restoring some other sticks that use them like the Neo Geo old style sticks which are getting pretty old and worn out by now, etc. So I thought this was worth noting but if the great guru of jap arcade parts says it really is not then I must be wrong. :lol:

Slow times at NG.com? I don't sense from you a genuine intention of trying to help.

We know about the T5 RAP situation. It's almost worthless so it didn't cross my mind.

And yes, you are misguided. If some one broke a terminal in the process of a T5 mod they could just as easily replace with a full button, which they were going to do anyway. The buttons on the NG stick are absolute shit, btw. I would recommend someone to use something else (or take the stick only and swap). So yeah, I'm not concerned with the PCB terminal buttons because they are irrelevant to someone who actually wants the best performance.

p.s. I never claimed, nor am I, some kind of guru.

There's virtually no clearance. That's why I cut the last couple of threads off the end of the shaft, just to make sure it didn't catch.

Is there any difference between this one and the original one other than the color? I would like the blue one I think. Also, does anyone know where I can find one of these?

Blue=All components Seimitsu stock
Red=All components Sanwa stock

components=stick/buttons

These sticks were offered for a limited time about 2 years ago, as such they're quite uncommon.

Low chance (none among western channels). Plus, you're looking at, say, $180 used for the SE.

I use this for hooking my HRAP up to my PC. Don't know about what GC adaptor to get, but let me know if you find a good one. I could do with one for Ikaruga.

I just got one myself to play fighting games with (I never thought the gamepads I use on shmups were holding me back). It's a lot like the one pictured earlier in the thread, except it has a metallic silver plate.

While I find double tapping motions (4,4;6,6) wonderfully easy to execute, I'm having a whole lot of trouble with half circle, quarter circle and DP motions, and I haven't quite figured out exactly where up/right is on the thing yet.

I had no problems with circular motions or the DP motion on the X-Arcade I'd been using (well, tiger kneeing DPs was tricky, but that was tricky on the gamepad too), but double tapping motions were a bitch. It's as if the Sanwa stick that came with me HRAP is like a photo negative of the X-Arcade stick.

Maybe I simply need to put in more time with the HRAP. The Sanwa stick is almost universally praised, so I'm thinking I'm just doing it wrong at this point.

I've got a quick question about the Hori RAP II, is the joystick suppose to make a clicking noise whenever it's moved? Sorry if this question has been addressed somewhere else, I did a quick search and didn't find anything.
