Freeloader works on Wii
So I was over Bill's house the other day playing his Wii, and we decided to test out the freeloader disc......
I popped in my import version of Ikaruga and IT WORKS! For those holding on to their gamecubes for import reasons, you can get rid of it now if you plan to get a wii.......
I didn't try Star Soldier or Nintendo Puzzle Collection yet though.....Tetris attack would be a blast with wii-mote controls.

Yes, you might get all of $19 in store credit for it.postman wrote:For those holding on to their gamecubes for import reasons, you can get rid of it now if you plan to get a wii.......

Yep, this is the gamecube freeloader disc......I'd be shocked if they made a Wii-loader this early.....
Granted I only tried Ikaruga, but since the console doesn't reset when you eject a disc, the swap is made possible and the import game can load......
If they disable it in a future firmware upgrade though, is another story completely.

Can the wii play gameboy/gba games like the cube?

Or, maybe they'll add the GBA library to the Virtual Console schedule someday.Pirate1019 wrote:Uhh...I don't think so. Not unless you can find a way to hook up a Gameboy Player To the Wii. I doubt it. Just emulate them if you own the titles.CMoon wrote:Can the wii play gameboy/gba games like the cube?
(I keep my Cube nonetheless)

That's the reason I'm keeping my GameCube, even if I may get a Wii later. Wouldn't this fuck with multi-disc games though? "Please insert disc 2". BAM! reset. I'm kind of thinking Nintendo may not tamper with the Wii's GC compatibility- any sort of tampering with it to fight FreeLoader could break some games. Nevertheless, getting a Japanese Wii sounds more tempting than a US one when the time comes, considering this thought.postman wrote:Yep, this is the gamecube freeloader disc......I'd be shocked if they made a Wii-loader this early.....

I never picked up a Freeloader since they were harder to find in stores around here. So instead i bought the GC action replay, which has the same import feature as the freeloader.
Well it seems that the action replay isn't compatible with the Wii. Probably because of the memory card dongle. When i start the GC game (action replay) from the Wii menu, it reboots instead of loading it

Yeah, I owe you one, don't I prof.
On the upper right on the back of each game box it'll show you in blue what controllers and attachements work with that game. The gamecube controller has its own designated logo. So basically you'll have to check every game's backside to see if it'll work for it. I know for a fact that Metal Slug and new Smash Brothers will support it (but I also know the GC dpad is tiny & stiffer compared to the Wii classic pad). And every Virtual Console game I sampled for more info had the gamecube controller on the list of things you can use.
I read somewhere awhile back that any other accessories that plug into the same gamecube port work on the Wii.
So the answer is yes, but only for games intentially retaining an old-school playstyle. I don't have anything to test third-party accessories though.

Thanks, DJ. That's very helpful. Sounds like I'll be able to play Metal Slug Anthology with my import Hori pad, since it likely has the same output as the standard GC controller. In any case I'll probably pick up that retro Wii controller-- from the pics I've seen it looks pretty cool.
One Zelda question, in case someone has a chance to check. I'm thinking of picking up Zelda for my daughter-- does it offer different difficulty levels? She can probably handle the normal difficulty, but she's only 7 so it would be nice if there were a beginning difficulty.

Lol, yeah, if I didn't have the Gameboy Player and the Hori Digital controller, I'd trade this sucker in real quick! At one game store I stopped in at, they were giving $30 trade-in credit for the Cube. Dunno if any store would accept the GB Player. In any case, those who are trading in their Cubes will, I would think, just end up having to purchase another Cube controller to play Cube games on the Wii, as you pretty much have to trade in a complete system.UnscathedFlyingObject wrote:I'm keeping my GC for playing GBA games and Resident Evil 4. It's otherwise a pretty good paperweight.
So, does the Wii store Cube gameplay data, or do you have to use a Cube memory card? I've also heard about some issues with people trying to hook it up to ether net ports.

I'll keep my GC around for my GB Player as well, plus the fact that I'm a collector.
The GC compatibility is good news, though, because on nights when my wife gets called in to work & she takes it w/ her to help her stay awake (she supervises mentally handicapped people, sometimes just to make sure they stay in bed all night instead of roaming around), I can still play my GC games on the Wii.

Hmm, I was planning to sell my GC, but now that I've done the math, I might as well keep it. Based on recent eBay sales, I'd need to include the controller to stand any chance of selling it, but then I'd need to buy a new GC controller to use with the Wii. Due to an odd quirk in eBay economics, new official GC controllers are going for nearly as much as full used systems @_@ ...so there's no point.
My excitement for Twilight Princess has fizzled since playing Okami, and Trauma Centre isn't the full sequel I was hoping for, so I'm now planning to wait a few months before picking up a Wii.

Update:
I was checking Play-Asia, and on their Freeloader page is says it's NOT compatible with the Wii:
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-28- ... 0-1ik.html
However this is the newer version.......I happened to test it out with the older version of the Freeloader (1.0)......so it may depend on which release of the FL you are using.......

I guess now I can use statements like:
"I just sold my Wi!!!!"
and
"Now I'm completely Wii-less."
Thanks Nintendo
I guess this makes the 1.0 Freeloader more desirable, maybe I'll try to find one today.....current version is 1.06B and looks completely different.
