Which version of Fantasy Zone is the best?

Post by EOJ »

Ok, I'm thinking of buying a console version of this
classic Sega Shmup. But there are many console versions available (SAT, PS2, GG, SMS, TG16, etc). I'm looking into the PS2 Sega Ages version and the Saturn version. Are there any differences between the two? Which is the best overall and most arcade perfect?

I'd go for the Sega Ages PS2 version (rather, just get Sega Classics Collection - it'll cost less and give you 9 additional games as well).

It's not arcade perfect, as the graphics have been changed to 3D, but the game still plays exactly the same if you're playing in arcade mode. Plus they're cel shaded graphics so they look nearly 2D anyway.

There's also an arrange mode that gives you 3d special stages. Also there's quite a few unlockables in the game.

If you're just looking for the straight arcade port, get the Saturn version.
You're arguing for a universe with fewer waffles in it. I'm prepared to call that cowardice.

Thanks! Sounds like the PS2 version is the way to go. I can play an arcade perfect version on MAME. Though I may snag the Saturn version if I can find it cheap (like, say, $10).

Don't tell me this! I was hoping to avoid having to buy a Master System. It's absurd, really, that the Saturn and PS2 versions of Fantasy Zone don't include FZ2 & 3.

I wonder whether there are other worthwhile shmups only available to those with a Master System?

Don't listen to these dirty, evil lies.

The Saturn verson is the best, but the new PS2 thing is an interesting and enjoyable diversion.

Totally. Power Strike II is probably the best 8-bit console shooter. I have a fondness for Bomber Raid, too.

Fantasy Zone 2 was in the arcades before it was on SMS. Also, saying that it's the best version of Fantasy Zone is like saying that Super Mario Bros. 3 is the best version of the original Super Mario Bros. They are different games!

I'm definatly going to get that SEGA Classics Collection. Circuit City is having a sale on it this week for $14.99. It got bad reviews from some critics, but they mostly complain about the updated graphics and not the actual gameplay (except possibly for Golden Axe).

There is a very good SG-3000 Zaxxon, but I'm not sure if it's playable on the US Master System or the Power Base Converter. I second the recommendation of Power Strike II. I'm not sure if I recommend the first Power Strike. It's a good game, but it's extremely hard and not as well balanced as the MSX Aleste. Too bad GG Aleste isn't playable on SMS. That game rocks.
