Ikaruga Startup Image (Monitor Calibration)
Finally got around to trying Ikaruga in my cab. I noticed the familiar startup screen with the counter but this time I also saw the dim image of a ship inside the box. I am guessing that this is a monitor calibration image.
Could someone who reads Japanese please tell me what the text says ?

Please set screen brightness and contrast.
Set the brightness & contrast of your cab, placing the ships sillhouette in the square frame.
Setting brightness is easier if you set the contrast close to it's MAX value.
Game will start after pressing the start button, or when the timer reaches zero.

Thank you for the heads up GaijinPunch!GaijinPunch wrote:Please set screen brightness and contrast.

I'm a bit unsure about the meaning though...
Do I adjust until I do not see the silhouette or until I can discern the weak silhouette ?

Thanks nZero, when I did this Ikaruga looked beautiful. It was just fluke that made me discover it, I had been playing with contrast and brightness on another game and my screen was very light. This made me see the silhouette when Ikaruga started and it reminded me of the Adobe calibration program.nZero wrote:It's surely the same as setting the black level on those THX calibration discs and the like. Set the brightness on the monitor to where the item in question is just barely visible over the black background for best picture.
Thank you all for your input

Does 'picture calibration' apply to other arcade PCBs?
And does this picture/image calibration apply to other arcade shmup titles as well? (Of course, each respective arcade PCB outputs differently at either high or low levels, hence the adjustable gain on the R, G, & B lines for optimum image viewing...)
Makes me wish that the arcade cabinets at my local arcades were optimized for best viewing -- "Some of them look real shitty, " said the kitty...another kitty lying nearby replied back, "Tough titty..." ^_~
Why is that with my Supergun setups, the picture and imagery is better than the monitor setups at the local arcades? (Could it be pure fucking lazyness or the no desire to adjust the arcade RGB monitor to it's best in overall picture presentation by the local arcade technician? -- that's one way to "lose" a customer like me who has an "eye for detail"...perhaps just a simple 're-cap' job {meaning replacement of the arcade RGB monitor's capacitors} is all that's necessary to get the ol' arcade monitors in tip-top shape again.....)
And that dreaded "screen burn-in" on some arcade cabinets looks like they need to be replaced...I like to play an arcade game with no "screen burn-in" issues -- looks like it's time to replace that aging and dying RGB monitor with a new one..... ^_~

Re: & does this picture calibration apply 2 other arcade
You have a new'ish monitor, they have monitors which have been on for years. And depending to the cab type the monitor can be very hard to adjust.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:Why is that with my Supergun setups, the picture and imagery is better than the monitor setups at the local arcades? Thanks for the clarification on the "screen burn-in" issues...
Yes, I know all about firing up a brand new RGB monitor -- one can't any better than that when it comes to playing arcade PCBs with that particular setup... ^_~
So it would be best to minimze "screen burn-in" by turing off the RGB monitor when finished playing with said arcade PCB and not having the RGB output lines cranked up too high but within reasonable limits for a stable & beautiful picture?

Re: & does this picture calibration apply 2 other arcade
Newer games have a bit more extensive attraction screens so the burn in is not as severe, but it's the high voltage which eventually gets to the tube. If you are not using your setup at home, turn it off. This will save your monitor and some energy.PC Engine Fan X! wrote: So it would be best to minimze "screen burn-in" by turing off the RGB monitor when finished playing with said arcade PCB and not having the RGB output lines cranked up too high but within reasonable limits for a stable & beautiful picture?
