Mars Matrix is the best of the lot, for sure. Gigawing is kewl, but I prefer to MAME that, though I own the dreamcast version.

Start with Silpheed, or else it'll feel even less enjoyable later.

I spent about 20 minutes with Silpheed. It's not a bad game. The visuals are nice, it's just that the game play is a little "slow". It's not as frantic as the games I'm used to playing these days. It's definately worth the $10 I paid for it though.

Castle Shikigami 2 is decent, but I find two things VERY wrong with it. First is the voice-overs. HOLY JEEBUS! Second, a lot of the enemy bullets are the EXACT SAME color as the old coins that rain down. I had a lot of "WTF" moments.

Simple solution for the first problem, play it with "Demo Off."

Silpheed: TLP happens to be one of the few games that attempts to bore you to death rather than kill you with crazy bullet patterns.

Hehe yeah I agree totally, I got to level 4 or 5 on my first play and I had a feeling I probably could have beaten it if I kept going, but I just got so bored I quit.

I tried to finish it once, but the last level combines the semi-chase perspective with a much larger number of bullets for a wonderful exercise in frustration. Not to mention pretty much every last one of your weapons suck. Oh yeah, and the whole boredom sapping your will to play thing.

Wow I bought Silpheed thinking "Sweet, Working Designs is releasing a PS2 shmup"...considering when I see Working Designs I think of their awesome port "Thunderforce V Perfect System".

But no...

Silpheed, while it may be candy for the eyes, is boring.
Depends on your taste, though seeing as you bought some manic shmups along with Silpheed, I think it's back to the shelf for the PS2 shmup that never was.

Nice buys though.

I've actually 1CC'ed Silpheed on hard difficulty hoping that I'd unlock something special. My reward? Absolutely nothing. WD really skimped on the extras in this game. Yes, the game does get more difficult towards the end, IIRC mostly due to laser and explosion attacks and the fact that your ship is so slow, it can't dodge ramming attacks you can see a half screen away.

The sad part is that while I wasted my time 1CCing the game, I've never once had the patience to sit through any of the numerous CG cutscenes in the game so I still have no clue what the story is other than the fact that you're on a team to destroy aliens that destroyed your world.

That's a shame, I found the cutscenes to be enjoyable. I actually liked the story a whole lot, through the cutscenes, the enemy reminded me of the Bydo (desecrating and infecting anything it touches, becomes some kind of mutant). If you're bored one day and decide to play through it again, check out the cinemas.

The other day I played Gradius IV and got really far; farther than I ever had before. I really like it, and I'm only reminded of how easy Gradius V is when compared to earlier entries when I play the compilation. GV's still teh best, IMO.

Oh where to begin! :D

Begin whereever you like,,, in the end You'll only really treasure Giga Wing and Shiki2 (and want keep Gradius III&IV just for the sublime intro movies and occasionally enjoy part IV (III is nice but nicer on the SNES!) :D
