Your Border Down synopsis was woeful. Please desist from writing "reviews" about games that you have not bothered to research properly.
Border Down is pretty much a Masterpiece, programmed by very experienced guys, and this shows in the depth of this game.
http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j262/ ... bd_d-1.jpg
^A 1 credit completion 6D ALL.
The scoring engine based on 'breaks' and the Bordering are tight. The sprite collision - perfect. The adrenaline and smooth flow are all there.
This game forces you to use your brain - something that you have stated that you do not wish to do.

I have the feeling, stop me if I'm wrong, that that is not a perfect run in Border Down. Probably far from it. You could just reply with "This is nowhere near perfection. This is only [throw in appropriate percentage here] of the possible scoring potential." He would probably shrug it off too. His head has just swelled a bit to much.

Yes, its far from a perfect run, but its a 1CC 6D ALL and the 1CC is the point I'm making. He spent a fair part of the next page complaining about not having enough continues
.
A perfect run requires a different route to 6D. Nevertheless, just try and beat my score
. not easy

Border Down is my favourite game of recent years, so I take it kinda personal. If someone's gonna slag it off, they had better get their facts straight first.

This all reminds me of the time when the NES came out. I remember Nintendo kept their cheats and secrets closely guarded. People gave a shit when they beat the Mother Brain or finally downed Mike Tyson. People still talk like it's a frikkin' badge of some kind if you can beat Punch-Out.
When I got the first Rachet & Clank. I did some of the tip-toeing, watched my P's and Q's, and tried with conscience effort not to die. I was amused, got the sequel, liked the minor improvements, but still had the somewhat rubbish storyline and a fair amount of the same. I pushed on through it but started to get laxed a little bit. Abandoned the secret-chasing, tried some fancy trick-shit with the bad guys, cared less about dying, etc.
Got the third one. Enjoyed the weapons. Completely didn't give a shit about the skill end. Headstrong through everything without a care in the world. And why not? Infinite lives after all. And then there's the 4th one. That sits unwrapped on me game rack. When I open it, I'll probably say to myself "just gimmie all the guns on max level...now!"
So then say Rachet & Clank 5, they adopt some kinda limited lives or an even lesser lifebar so I'd have to really watch my shit. I'd probably get pissed 'cause I can't be so lazy, as I've learned well in gaming over the years.
But this doesn't just start and end at Rachet & Clank. This is about how meaningful it was to accomplish a game over the years. That started high and dwindled to just about zero nowadays. And that's where your video game reviewer mentality comes in. That's what this is all about. Even if WarCheese said it better.
Hah, and why should that even change? You can't even get a proper ending out of a game anymore. God-forbid you put effort into a title to not cheat it through, you're left with a lame anti-climatic cliffhanger and an advertisement for a sequel purchase not even 11 months later. It's like people want to shell out $50 on new-release-Tuesday to go on their HARDEST OF THE HARDCORE BARE-KNUCKLES SAFARI ADVENTURE but they've done it so many times with diminishing quality each participant really just wanted a greyhound tour bus with bulletproof windows, heated vibrating recliner seats, and a trained medic willing to do half the work for them..so all that's left for our players is "OOOHHH, DROOL! Graphics and Large Breathtaking Environments!! Charming! ^_^ "
So with that guy and the shooters...I was surprised to find a reviewer even plays them and was happy he name-dropped some. Somebody should just post his link in the Game Features You Hate With a Passion and that would cover just about every other interesting innovation the industry tried to make one year or another. But hey, at least the author took the effort to make it to the SOTN inverted castle. I bet I bet he needed to look up GameFAQs to figure it out.
Ranting is fun. Now I'm in happy mood for some Pinball. Thanks for reading ^_^;

What I think is funny about it all is that shooters take no time to beat when you figure them out. There's no need to save anywhere in a genre that takes a half hour to clear. If you run into a wall, it means you're not good enough to get past it and you need to get better. Ten-fifteen minutes of practice time each run doesn't seem like too much to ask.

Ahh, but "Walls" are the "Gay Nazi Hitler Facist Racist" of the game industry. Last I checked anyway.
Watching my little sister set everything to very easy, max lives, and asking me to beat the hard parts for her is about how I picture most gamers under 17.
Oh well, fuck paintbrushing. I'm out for real now
Here's to another 3 pages added to this thread...with eventual complaints!

Good comment on that review anyway, his article made me really angry (being a huge Taito / G.Rev fan myself).

. Virtually no-one has & to be honest, I find it difficult to step back to the older Darius games after the Border Down experience. Its just a lot crisper & user-friendly (once you get used to the loose joystick).BD score hunting!

If he'll never get it, he'll never get it. I won't be surprised if he gets bored with videogames because all he cares about is whether feature X and/or feature Y exists and never on the overall design of a game.Gungriffon Geona wrote:I'll be damn, he replied!

That's asking for trouble. By trouble I mean 'excuses and petty insults'. Maybe even an entire new article bashing arcade games exclusively. At least he is not so much of a prick that he actually replied.Gungriffon Geona wrote:on that note, I offered him a challenge. everyone get ready, he'll probably send fake screenshots like the moron he is.

Where are we suppposed to give the thumbs down exactly? "of 179" is a bit deceptive when there's no apparent option. 179 OF 179 PEOPLE WHO SELECTED THE 1 AVAILABLE OPTION SELECTED THAT OPTION. WOW!

What this basically boils down to is that you can't accept that I don't like the game. I personally think the Border Down system is a terrible way to punish the player for a mistake... it's both frustrating and disorienting for players who are either new to shooters or refuse to become slaves to them for the sake of a high score.
Maybe you think that jumping through the endless flaming hoops set before you by a sadistic programmer is fun, but me, I like a little more freedom than that. I don't play by patterns, I don't play by memorization. I don't subject myself to hours of punishment to learn how to play a game perfectly, because by the time you're finished, any fun that may have been there when you first brought it home has long since went out the window.
In my humble opinion, being conditioned to follow a set path like a lab rat in a Skinner maze is not entertainment. It's clear that most gamers feel the same way; it's the reason that full-motion video "games" like Dragon's Lair are extinct and more rigid shooters like Ikaruga and Border Down are on the endangered species list. To put it succinctly, no freedom equals no fun.
I'm sorry you don't like my article... or rather, refuse to like my article because I dissed one of your favorite games. However, it's worth pointing out that nearly two hundred other readers disagree with you, including Ziff-Davis Editorial Director John Davison. Even without the thumbs up/thumbs down system that was previously in place at 1UP.com, they're likely to be in the majority.

It's funny that he says rigid shooters like Ikaruga are an endangered species when Ikaruga is probably the most popular, most available, most respected and best reviewed shooter outside of Japan. The chaining and color systems are exactly why it got reviewed so positively in mainstream press.
