No wonder shmuppers prefer joypads for PC gaming...

Post by gs68 »

So I just got my 3-in-1 PC Joy Box to go with my Saturn pad (it's a US one but it's good enough). It works very well--I had no trouble setting it up, and I don't notice any lag (compared to the horrible lag with the Kiki-Joy converter).

I went to a few Kenta Cho shmups and noticed nice boosts in my skill. My thumb is better at reacting than 3 fingers are, and I managed to beat PSY mode stage 6A in rRootage for the first time, and i one-lifed Normal mode stage 4R. I also set a few new records here and there.

I'll have to admit: if it weren't for this board and its love for Saturn pads, I'd still be using a keyboard to get owned in PC shmups. Thank you guys for indirectly making me get a Saturn pad!

I think that there is such a thing as a good keyboard; it's just not the norm. Do people like the PS2 pad? I screw up diagonals on that a lot. I haven't touched it in a few months though.

Agreed. I only have a PS2 pad and the games that need some serious button mashing are simply exhausting.

I plan on buying a pad for my PC soon too. It feels too awkward playing PC shmups the same way I would be playing a FPS.

I use a Dual Box Pro w/ a PSX controller on my home PC. I love it! I wouldn't consider going to a joystick unless I could get my hands on an X-Arcade dual stick or something like that.

Joy Box really is a good model...I got the 4-in-1 USB to PS2 Dual Shock and haven't gone back since...

Ikaruga plays just like it were on Playstation on my PC, heh.

I just have a logitech USB controller. Looks a lot like a PS2 controller except that the left thumbstick is a bit out of the way, so I use the D-pad. Works well enough for me.

Holy hell...someone uses the keyboard for PC shmupping!? Amazing... I havn't used the kb since before I installed a joystick port on my 486. You do the math.

Currently using the official USB Saturn Pad and my custom stick.

I've always felt that playing with a keyboard is writst suicide but hadn't done anything about it until now. Hell, it feels good playing with a pad. I got me a Thrustmaster pad with rumble. Pretty good.

I do so much better with my keyboard than anything else it isn't even funny. giving me a controller I can do well, but a good ol'keyboard works better because my hands cramp up a whole lot less.
