Guwange >>> Air Gallet > Blazing Star > Star Force
Armed Police Batrider: Didn't have ANY time to play that week. When I last played it, I hated it though. Hopefully someday I'll have time to read about all the secrets and scoring techniques and try it for real.
Blazing Star: I only had time for a few runs, and felt BS was a slight disappointment after Pulstar.
Star Force: I liked it. I've always been more into survival than scoring, so this was nice, too bad I didn't have time for this one either.
Dragon Blaze: Don't own it, and in MAME it was running too slow, so I didn't even try it. I was hoping people would vote for Sengoku Blade instead.
Air Gallet: This was a surprise, so much fun. Especially competition-wise, nice playing something that most competitors hadn't already exhausted. Shame about that fucking Hunter-Seeker weapon, which caused so much restarting.
Guwange: Created a helluva addiction, too bad I didn't have enough time with it, because I was getting better on every run. No restarts necessary here, but once I was ready to start screaming obscenities when suddenly some .pdf (which I had forgotten I was downloading) opened on top of the MAME window just when I had a record chain and totally fucked up the run

Before Pope John Paul died he decreed that Aliens were also GOD's creatures and we should treat them with respect.

I got so lucky on my top scoring game. MAME minimized for about 5-10 seconds (feels like longer, but that's my guess) during the 4th boss and somehow I managed to not get hit or lose the chain. Not quite sure how that happened.Shocky wrote: Guwange: Created a helluva addiction, too bad I didn't have enough time with it, because I was getting better on every run. Blazing Star = Dragon Blaze = Air Gallet > Batrider = Star Force > Guwange
Blazing Star was long and boring when playing it repeatedly, but outside of the competition I think it is a nice relaxing diversion (until I get pwned). Air Gallet is kind of the same thing except vertical and without boss milking.
DB is a lot of fun and it's good test of survival. The difficulty ramps up as the game goes on but it's not as cheap as Star Force. Batrider is like DB except collecting the medals is too stressful.
I don't like Guwange much because I suck at survival as well as scoring and it seems not to be possible to concentrate on one and ignore the other.

Batrider > Guwange > Air Gallet > Dragon Blaze > Star Force > Blazing Star.
I probably averaged around 5-6 hours per game, and my total MAME time before the contest was 20 hours at best (why I never voted). I didn't get more than halfway through anything, but here are some impressions:
Armed Police Batrider: I played this for maybe a half hour long ago, and it made no sense. It went better this time. Game's fast, busy, epic, full of secrets. Perhaps the most perfect shmup I've ever played. If I ever try to get good at any of the contest games, this is it.
Guwange: Outstanding presentation, interesting weapon system (I've seen obvious derivatives before). Chaining a whole credit doesn't sound too bad since the timing is so gentle. I like it a lot more than DP/DDP. The game's not as diverse or engaging as Batrider though.
Air Gallet: Feels dated and simple, but it's fun. Nice weapon system, I assume the bombs are nice too, I just never saw anything that looked worth bombing (noting, of course, that I never made it out of stage 3). Solid game, but unremarkable.
Dragon Blaze: My keyboard would seize up for seconds at a stretch during the desert and sky stages. Once I figured out how to stop that (forced frameskip) I played for maybe another hour. The dragon shot is fun, but the game felt oppressive and a chore to play.
Star Force: Well, it's playable. Too primitive though. I can't button mash at all here, so I could get none of the "interesting" bonuses. Nice to know they exist, at least. There's enough variety and stuff happening that I can stay interested; it's just, again, primitive. I hear something about Cleopatra sucking, as well.
Blazing Star: A very pretty game with nice ship variety, OK weapons & scoring mechanics, and insufferable stages. Stage 4 looks like it might have been a little fun if I ever got there. But I'd always get bored in stages 1-2 and forget what little plans I cared to make for stage 3. Stage 6 looks depressing. A lot of care and attention obviously went into the game, but it stinks.

It's obvious that the coldness, which crept up from your feet after your socks got blown off, froze your brain and made thinking difficult. There's no other way you could come up with conspiracy theories like this.BulletMagnet wrote:I KNOW Air Gallet tampered with the election.
I hope next year we'll get some more games that a) are easy to get into even for someone who hasn't touched the game before and b) haven't been played to death by several forum members.
I felt totally worthless playing Guwange, Batrider and Dragon Blaze, as in those games I needed a good chunk of the playing week to get comfortable with the games' mechanics. Very frustrating, that. In Retro week and Hidden Gem week, roughly the same players got out on top, but competing was much more fun, as the playfield felt more even and more like actual competition instead of a bunch of guys showing off their impressive skills and experience in front of a crowd which barely knows what's going on. I can understand that the top players may quickly get bored with simpler games which don't have a complicated score system that keeps them busy and interested, but, on the other hand, for less advanced players like me one week is little time to learn a complex system and you quickly reach the point where you wonder why you should even bother trying to catch up.
P.S.: If the Raizing fanboys get their way and we have to play Garegga in next year's Raizing week, I'll switch to the dark side and declare Emperor BulletMagnet my new master.

(PS - Actually, if you check the Hidden Gem Week voting thread, the tally on the first post lists ill6's (somewhat confusing, I admit) vote for Vasara under Cyvern, and my vote for it isn't even counted. It wouldn't have mattered as Gallet would have won anyways, but I still want a paper trail next year.
Why wait?P.S.: If the Raizing fanboys get their way and we have to play Garegga in next year's Raizing week, I'll switch to the dark side and declare Emperor BulletMagnet my new master.
