What systems do you own and are you capable of importing on them?

The main thing you need to remember is practice makes perfect. Everyone has their own style of approaching a game when they first play it so find what works for you. These games are mainly about memorization and I find it usually works best to play for survival first and score second.

I would recommend Giga Wing, not because it's necessarily easier but because the scoring system is very rewarding.

Hmmm... Well you must understand that basically all shooters get hard later on, at least to a point. For Dreamcast, in my opinion the easier ones are Radirgy and Gunbird 2. PS2... I haven't actually played Homura, but that one seems fairly easy, and has a budget release coming soon. Stay away from Cave shooters ;) They're pretty merciless. Even ESPGALUDA, which is regarded as their eaisest game (and is damn awesome btw) is pretty intimidating. Also try the Psykio Shooter Collection that has Strikers 1945 I & II on it. Those are only fairly difficult. My experience with shooters is pretty limited though, and I've never really encountered any "easy" ones save one or two on the Saturn.

Shikigami no shiro II isn't to rough early on, although I haven't played enough to attest to the later stages. Btw, as Arvandor eluded to, if you're interested in picking up an older console the saturn is what you want. There's some nice pick-up-and-play shmups for it...Just remember though, if you want to get all classics it will break you. I know first hand

Do you play DDR with high speed mods? It actually affects how you would respond to fast bullets... in a good way. D;

But on topic though, I'd recommend Mushihimesama for PS2. Fun for all.

R-Type Delta, Einhander and ThunderForce 5 can be played without much trouble, and are actually fun. And since you have a PS2 you can play them without any trouble.
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

Well, most shmups have various difficulty settings. They usually range from "Easy" to "Hard", with some going "Very Easy", and others reaching for "Abnormal" and "Yea Right" (literally). So basically, if you adjust the difficulty setting to your skill level, just about any shmup is open to you... even some of the manic ones (aka "bullet hell" shmups where the screen litterally fills with bullets from enemies). So, here are some shmups I'd recommend checking out...

-DC-

Border Down
Under Defeat
Gunbird 2
Giga Wing 2
Zero Gunner

I'd bring up Mars Matrix and Gunbird 2, but those can be a bitch even on Easy.

-PS2-

Silpheed: The Lost Planet
Gradius V
Gradius III & IV
pack
R-Type Final

-PS1- (these should play fine on your PS2)

Einhander
The Raiden Project
Raiden DX
Thunder Force V
R-Types
R-Type Delta
Raystorm
Raycrisis
Strikers 1945
(this one's actually Strikers 1945 II... why they renamed it, I don't know).

There are a few imports for the PS1 that are great games, like Gradius Gaiden, Raiden DX and even the Japanese version of X2. But you'll need to be able to play import PS1 games on your PS2 system, which I'm not certain on how to do. Of course, you could also grab an emulator and play the CDs on your PC too.

-Saturn-

Radiant Silvergun
Hyper Duel
Thunder Force Gold Pack 1
Thunder Force Gold Pack 2
Blast Wind
Darius Gaiden
Darius II
Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus
Gradius Deluxe Pack
Kyokyuko Tiger II
Galactic Attack
Layer Section II
Strikers 1945

There's also Battle Garegga, Metal Black, Soukyugurentai, DonPachi and DoDoPachi, but those are pretty rough even on Easy. So I'd suggest looking up some info on them first.

Some may not fit your tastes, but I think most of those should be doable for a beginner.

This is messed up, dudes. Nobody mentioned Gradius Gaiden yet? What about Salamander Deluxe Pack (not just because I'm selling it .)
"Sooo, what was it that you consider a 'good salary' for a man to make?"
"They should at least make 100K to have a good life"

Welcome to the forum. I'd have to go w/ most everything The Coop says. I'd recommend Gradius V & R-Type Final as good starters (for horzies anyway), Shikigami No Shiro II (Castle Shikigami 2 in the US), Einhander, Raiden Project (if you can find it reasonably priced), and Raystorm as being in the easy-early-on category. Watch out though, they get tough early on. I'll also throw my recommendation for Gekioh: Shooting King for PS1 (port of Shienryu for Saturn) because of it's fun extra modes & nice difficulty curve. It's a good vert that's kind of in between a manic like DonPachi/DoDonPachi & a trad vert like Raiden or Twin Cobra. Good game.

Dodonpachi, Dodonpachi DOJ, Battle Garegga, Mars Matrix, Ibara and Batrider on Mame or FBA. Everything else is downhill from there.

He's asking for the easier shmups, not the hardest =P Though, I honestly don't think Mars Matrix is "that bad." It just has a weird learning curve is all. DDP:DOJ, Ibara, and Battle Garegga on the other hand... Are three of the big controller breakers. Though, DDP:DOJ is "fair" in it's retarded amounts of difficulty, I can't comment on Ibara as I've only played it once ever, and I don't care much for Battle Garegga's BS rank system.

Ah, if you have a Saturn, Shienryu and Donpachi arne't too terribly difficult. I think I got to chapter 4-5 in both of them the very first time I popped 'em in; on a single credit of course.

Also, if you don't like changing the difficulty, then keep in mind that A LOT of the games mentioned in an above post are really tough on normal mode. I've never mucked with difficulty, so I don't know about non-normal, but yeah.
