R-type reference in Radiant Silvergun.

Post by SFKhoa »

I've tried it for the first time, and aside from the "GO GO IREM" Dog secret they had in the game, one of the bosses had a serious R-Type influence to it as well, not only that, its name is "Gallop".

Arrowhead's red weapon reference.

Arrowhead's yellow weapon reference.

One of the wave cannon reference.

Cerberus's weapon reference, but I can't remember which.

Another wave cannon reference.

There's also the boss shooting out its force bit as well.
I know many of you have seen this and think it's old, but it's a new and surprising thing for me.

Nicely done. I'm not sure I follow the argument at each step, but I'll take your word for it.

Should I screenshot the original R-9 weaponry for comparison? Even so, perhaps the most hardcore "R-Typer" will get this.

Both of these are references to R-Type 2 - the semi-homing laser and the first instance of the Dispersion Wave Cannon. You also missed the Shotgun Bullets - those mines that fly out and explode on impact with something - which is another reference to R-Type 2.

The "Force Device" even fires in the split-four-way style of the classic Round Force. The "Force Device" does look R-13ish though, now that you mention it.

I always got a nice subconscious memory of the R-9 whenever Gallop fired the blue ring lazer and the wave burst. Nice job pointing out the other homages.

Huh, guys? I thought Radiant Silvergun came out before R-Type Delta? Like, a year before.

There are several Image Fight references as well, from the obvious (large carriers in the later half of stage 3) to more subtle arrangements of things in the level design.

These screens were from MAME, it runs at full 60FPS in some cases. SSF is only slightly slower.

Its a reference to Space Invaders too...you press a button and your ship shoots.

But you are right, the similarity to R-Type is obvious.
Nice screenshots btw.

I find it rather amazing that RSG is one of the most analyzed shmup and among dozens of articles I've read about it, noone mentioned this before. :)

It's been mentioned several times in previous iterations of the shmups board. I created a thread about this when I got my RSG and everyone was like "welcome to five years ago."
"Sooo, what was it that you consider a 'good salary' for a man to make?"
"They should at least make 100K to have a good life"

I think the faq on gamefaq (its been around forever) mentions this.

Well, it should run 60FPS FOR the most part. Maybe you're using an earlier build of MAME?

So, what about the sound? In MAME 0.106 the music was extremely rudimentary. I hope you`re not discussing about running RSG with -nosound.

Funny how RSG gets a lil' more and more playable with each MAME build.
I remember when you couldn't get past the Treasure logo.....

Couldn't get the game running with any MAME version. Maybe I have a corrupted ROM? Does this game use something special or why are there speed issues, I never came accross any speed issues in any game I tried on MAME (and there was no game that was meant to work but didn't work either). After seeing those screenshots I really want to play this game, is it worth to grab the Saturn version?

Speaking of references to shmups...

I could've sworn Shmup.com (the French site) had an article explaining all those Beattitude for Gains and the Boss references in RS.

Also...if you kindly look at my signature...I discovered the ORIGIN of the Beattitudes...lol
