BEST japanese ps2 shmup list

Post by chickadee »

I was going to buy a Wii, but instead im going to buy a brand new Japanese ps2 just to play shmups. But to make my purchase really worth it I need to know the best/most popular shmups available for ps2. Also what to stay away from (I hear radilgy is garbage for ps2 -slowdown-) I'll start this list off with the 2 games im going to buy along with the ps2:

ESP Galuda
Ibara

Thank you all. Most of these games go for $60 a pop so I have to make wise purchases and this will help me out a lot.

Actually, quite a few of 'em (most recently Homura and TSS: La Petite Princesse) have gotten budget releases that you can get for about half the price, so unless you're a stickler when it comes to original prints and whatnot you might want to look out for those.

As for which are "best," in all honesty there are few PS2 shmups I really dislike...Galuda and DOJ are generally considered some of the best (especially since the port quality was excellent), and Gradius V has a decent fanbase around here too...in the end, though, it comes down to which types of shmups you prefer.

If you want some horizontal Shmup sugestions then you should also consider buying Gradius V as it's proberbly one of the better addtions to the series. Since you are getting a Jap PS2 then I would also consider getting some old Jap PS1 games as well like R-Type Delta for example.

Vertical Shmup wise there are plenty of games to choose from (duh? hence the thread! ~ reader) but I would strongly suggest picking up DoDonPachi for the PS1 and Shikigami no Shiro 2 for the PS2. Also if you like you shooters all old school like then I would strongly suggest Raiden 3 as it's fantastic in my opinion and the current Shmup I am playing atm.

Hope that helps! :)

I've gotten the most use out of:
Shiki II
Dragon Blaze
Though, most people find Dragon Blaze really hard. If that's an issue for you, Espgaluda is really popular.

The Jap PS1 shmup library has numerous gems. Do a search and you'll find lots of discussion.

Hi Chickadee, I picked up a JPS2 a year ago for all the fantastic shooters and it's easily my most played console over the last 12 months. My recomendations would be to pick up ESPGaluda due to it's accesability and Mushihimesama for a tougher challenge. Just stick to Maniac mode on the latter though, Original mode is not that great.

Dodonpachi DOJ and the Taito Best release of Ibara would be my next picks.

Ok so now im going to order:

Dodonpachi DOJ
Mushi
Shikigami (all three games)
Raiden III
R-Type Final
Gradius V (even though the original was a little slow for me)

and theres a whole bunch of discounted games coming out in the next 3 months (SNK best, Taito best and CapKore games) I think I made the right decision getting a J Ps2 instead of a Wii.

Keep em' comin Just name any shmup that catches your fancy i'm going to look into all of them :D

Homura
Shikigami no Shiro: Nanayozuki Gensoukyoku (how is this one compared to II)
Twinkle Star Spirits: La Petite Princesse
Ibara (when it goes best)

Thank you all

Not a shmup. Not even a shooter. For those who don't read Japanese, it's not even going to serve as a game.

Thanks ganson I almost bought it. I heard it was text based with shooting parts in between but the ratio between shooting and text I wasnt sure.

No challenge, pathetic patterns, next to nothing resembling a scoring system, worst selection of ships ever.

I like it. If you despise early Psikyo stuff you will react to it like Rob, though. I suggest you try out one of the other Sonic Wings games via emulation. If you happen to like them, SWS will give you more of the same in superior form.

The worst selection of ships is in Sengoku Ace, btw. All of those are awful. Some of the ships in SWS are actually useful.

I've been playing the first 3 Sonic Wing games for years, there decent. Although I prefer bullet curtain games I might give this a try.

My personal good shooties for Japan PS2 would be:

Mushihimesama
Twinlke Star Sprites La Petite Princesse
Dragon Blaze

A Japan PS2 can also allow for some great PS1 shooties:

Zanac X Zanac
Harmful Park
Gradius Gaiden
Raiden DX

Nice list.
Beware, though, that it does not play Toaplan Shooting Battle v.1. You'll need a Jap PS1 to play Twin Cobra in tate format.

Wow! Zanac and Harmful Park go for $150-$200 on ebay. Thanks to everyone. So far I have plenty of shmups to keep me going for months.

I got my used copy for around 40-45, but it was a year or more ago...if it's mint/complete I'd say you got a good deal, one of my favorite games too.
