ABS, Guard Barrier, Reflect Laser etc

Post by gavin19 »

I don't think it's a coincidence that my fav shmups all employ some form of secondary defense mechanism like the Guard Barrier in Espgaluda or the Mosquito System in MM. I like to have that safety net without having to bomb my way through more difficult stages. Anyway, all I wanted to ask was are there any other games with a similar 'gimmick' aside from MM, the gigawings, galuda and radirgy? Thanks.

Homura has a sword slash that reflects bullets.
Guwange has a spirit that slows bullets.
The Vasaras have a melee attack that cancels bullets.

All good games, too.

Edit: I think Chaos Field has a bullet-sweeping thingie too.

Maybe also Progear where you cancel bullets by shooting enemies nearby. If your ringvalue is high enough this is a really usefull defense technic.

RSG has a sword what not, as do some of the chars in Shikigami no Shiro series.

In Psyvariar 2 you can absorb bullets when you power up. I think in Nightraid you do something similar too... Non of these are like GW or MM though.

The guard barrier IS a bomb. You use it like a bomb, you "recharge" it like a bomb (items) ;)
The Mars Matrix system is a better example in my opinion.

I don't think you "absorb" or otherwise manipulate bullets in either of those, though you do gain invincibility from them via various means.

How about pretty much any game with options? They almost always absorb shots for you.

Yes. It does. Too bad it doesn't fix the games mediocrity. :(

Apologies, I meant to say Kakusei mode in Espgaluda.

Thanks for the many suggestions btw.
