UnscathedFlyingObject wrote:Dodonpachi Daioujou as most of you should know by now. Toughest game I've ever played but it has me hooked like crack. Playing in Yoko is a little hard since bullets are wayyy too close together. I wish I had a TATE monitor to play this.
Get a cheap used TV or monitor some place. If you plugged it in, unplug it. Wait a few minutes. Now turn it so the bottom is on the right. Plug it back in. Hook everything up. Tada, you now have TATE. Check out this web site : http://turn.to/vertical . It almost always works. You might not want to try this with an expensive TV tho cause something might fall off and break. So far I have had no problems playing The Raiden Project this way.

I'm currently playing Fren-ze (tate) and Bullet Candy... both indie PC shmups. Xyanide and Ibara on the console side and Gradius collection on PSP.

Lilian fourhand: Nuclear Souer Fighters ..for the PC. I picked it up at an Anime con about 2 weeks ago. You play 1 set of 4 different pairs of girls. You walk down the street from left to right and shoot everyone you see. If you let off the fire button it auto locks on people in the backround (ala Panzer Dragoon) and your second person following behind you can fire backwards. You can also double jump. Its more of a Contra style shooter but w/ an anime backround. Def worth a try if your up for sompin' different.

turned the TV back to its regular horizontal mode. Been playing some old PCE stuff.

Mainly Hanatakadaka and Super Darius.

Hanatakadaka is really a great game. Great graphics and classy music. Not only are the amount of weapons very robust, but the levels themselves have nice branching paths. All of this plus the wacky traditional Japan as pop-bublegum sort of atmosphere easily puts this game into my top 5 PCE shooters.

I am kinda new here, though I've been reading this for a while and used to log in as than previously, though I forgot all my details. As this is my first post with this account, hi :)

Since I recently got a ps2 (and just prior to that I was borrowing my boss's ps1) I've been picking up quite a lot of shooters.

PS1

R-Type Delta - This is a masterpiece. I don't understand why this, 2 and Final appear to be so disliked by shmupers. OK, so there are a few parts where it can be a little unfair, and as with all the other R-Type games, it requires a lot of memorisation to beat (not really anything serious until the end of level 4 though), but look at it - it's fucking beautiful, it has a fantastic soundtrack and is really satisfying to play. Not only that, but it doesn't make your eyes bleed because there are not so many bullets to worry about.

Raiden DX - This is a really enjoyable shooter. It doesn't seem that different to Raiden 2 (that I have on PC) and I HATE the powerup system, but it has nicely drawn graphics, some cool enemy designs and generally feels pretty solid.

Gradius Gaiden - I don't like Gradius games, so I don't know quite why I bought this. It's kinda shit. Hate the gradius powerup system with a passion, the guns don't feel satisfying to use, the ship is horrendously slow to start with so you always need to spend your first powerup on a speedup... ugh, just hate it.

G-Darius - Thought it looked good when I played it ages ago, but played it recently and it's aged badly. Looks crap, aside from the bosses, and is thoroughly unsatisfying.

Ray Crisis - Another kind of meh shooter. Nothing special.

PS2

R-Type Final - Another underrated R-Type game. It has some terrible slowdown, and doesn't have level design quite as interesting as Delta or R-Type 3, but it is a great game in its own right. Also, I don't feel the 101 ships are particularly gimmicky, since there are some pretty different ships to choose from, and trying each one out and racking up some more playtime is always fun. Great graphics and pretty different music for a shooter.

Rajirugi - OK I suppose, but doesn't feel particularly crunchy or rewarding when you shoot down the enemy ships. I don't really care about scoring, so that is a big problem for me. The graphics are OK in TATE, but I can't rotate my TV, so they end up looking a bit flat and squished in YOKO :/

Silpheed - Awful weapon upgrade system (though the idea of changing weapons by refuelling from a supply ship is kinda cool) and fairly uninteresting levels from a visual standpoint. Gets a bit repetetive too. Also, like Rajirugi it isn't a 1 hit death game, so it is a little easy.

Despite not liking Gradius games, I'm looking forward to getting hold of Gradius 5 when I find it cheap somewhere, and I'm also after some of the Cave shooters like mushi and Ibara, though I only seem to see them at 5000yen or more and don't want to buy the crappy box budget editions :) I'm drooling over the next Mutant Storm game.

PS, any Osaka based folks want to give me some tips for good used game shops or price estimate for finding shooters then please PM me. I work in Kyoto and have pretty much been to every game shop here but there are only a couple of good ones (though chain stores like Sofmap seem to have pretty decent used game selections).

I take one small dose of Zanac each day. So far I really enjoy the game, but I'm still getting a grip on the basics of mechanics/scoring. And level 4 kicks my ass every time. Probably in a few days it won't be such a pain.

I've been playing a few credits of Raiden III most evenings. When I picked it up I foolishly thought "with my Dragon Blaze skills, this old school shooter wont test me at all!". But I still can't beat the level 3 boss and I've had the game for a couple of weeks now. The game seems completely average, yet for some bizarre reason I'm really enjoying it.

I'm trying lots of new material these days. Playing more hori's for a change of pace though...like progear and R-Type. The Gunbird games always stay in regular rotation because whenever I get frusterated with something I'll play a few credits of Gunbird to remind myself that it can always be more frusterating . Still playing Darius and failing terribly at it. Lots of Donpachi.

I'm not playing DOJ, that's for sure. I'm probably not going to get back to it until sometime in November or December, when I can afford to get the Wells-Gardner I have my heart set on.

Hello all:

I play DOJ, when I feel optimistic...

Then, I play Shikigami no Shiro 2 because I feel crushed after playing DOJ and need a bit of confidence boost.

Cheers.

Yesterday I played Phalanx on Super Famicom.

The game has a lot of things going for it, but there's a lot about it that turns me off too. The bosses are really lame, for example, and some of your weapons really suck as well. Overall a pretty decent title, but not exceptional, I would say.

Anyway, I quickly moved on to R-Type III, but only ended up really frustrated. I guess that was to be expected. In my opinion it's still the best SFC shooter though.

I've been playing 覇天光 (Hatenkou), a 1998 doujin shooter for the X68000 by ハイテイドラドラズ (Haiteidoradoras). It's a fairly manic hori with plenty of pink bullets to wade through. Power-up system is confined to a single upgradeable weapon and up to four options, but there are 5 option formations that can be cycled through at any time. Your ship is equipped with a one-hit shield that charges with time - when your shield gets penetrated, all bullets on the screen turn into point bonuses.

Certainly one of the more impressive doujinsoft I've seen for the platform.

Since my original Mushihimesama shipped today I'm going to try to get into it.
BTW: is there a translation of the level-stories at the end of the booklet? I can't read/understand any japanese but it would be nice if I knew what's going on.

My fresh copy of Silpheed: The Lost Planet just came in. First impressions:

The visuals (graphics, design and style) are quite nice. The intro was awesome. The HUD display is clean, with only whats needed being on it, menu/option navigation is clean.

One thing that grasped my attention the story. This game has a story, and I mean one that you actually deal with. Radio/Intercom is always on, so you're hearing about the "war", and other pilots blurbs on it (or deaths). Its really fun.

More later.

I've been pretty Raiden-centric this month with my time split between Raiden Project and Raiden III. In all the years I've been playing the original Raiden (on and off), I've only just grasped the real power of the wide shot :? Raiden III is pretty decent, but I miss having the opening level occur over a country town.

My Psy2 score is creeping up, but it's still nothing to boast about. I'm playing a few credits of DOJ here and there, but I don't see myself trying to chain it seriously any time soon. Ibara and Galuda are still getting play, but Mushi has dropped off the menu for the time being.

IMO, Gradius V stands head and shoulders above the other games in the series. I paid £25 (about 5500yen) for the PAL version when it first came out, and it was worth every penny. You might want to relent and get the budget version of Mushi, but Ibara is well worth full price.

Its my first post, I am so nervous! Hehe, the Pirate told me to tell you that.

Anyways, I am playing Sexy Parodius and Gigawing a lot, of late. I am also a fan of ABA games stuff, but then again who isn't.

Nice board you guys have going on here. Glad to now be a part of it.

Under Defeat vs. Guwange

UD - Disappointing. I was expecting something closer to ZG2 quality-wise. The game feels off. Needs ship selections, main shot power-ups, a greater degree of turning, less tedium and ZG2's option attacks >> UD's. And when the screen freezes up when you get hit, pathetic. I'll try to clear the first round anyways.
