Can someone post the quick rundown on how to read the score? I can sorta muddle through it but a quick guide by someone who knows what the fuck would be helpful.

Check SAM's post in this thread...IIRC you really only need to know the symbols for 0-9.

Just to check, though, I'll post my first score...

Image

If I translated everything right, I believe it should turn out something like...

BulletMagnet - Team Loser - 1,391,377 - Stage 4 - Gensuke

If I got it wrong, please let me know.

Anyways, not too bad for having not played in a bit...held my chain up till just before the stage 2 boss, then got it back to about 1000 in stage 3 before losing it again...from there all heck broke loose, as usual. Hopefully will have a decent amount of time to devote to this, as it's one of my favorites.

If you want to know your hiragana for your name entry, go here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiragana

For the score numerals, go here:
http://sp.cis.iwate-u.ac.jp/sp/lesson/j ... mbers.html

This is my name in hiragana, I'll be using it on my scoretable when I get round to posting screenshots:
いかるす = i-ka-ru-su
(Although for foreign words they should technically be using katakana, but nevermind.)

I doubt Edge will want to bother listing the chain count for the tournament table, but in your case BM, its 1914.

Cool, I think I translated it correctly then. :)

Each rank is seperated by color (first place being on the far right), and has three columns each, written vertically. The one on the far left, is the score. The one in the middle is stage, and just under it coin (max chain) and the third one (on the right) is your characters name. There's something else under the name but I'm not sure what it means.

Anyways, the kanji can be found on this chart, written from top to bottom.

The kicker is the 10,000 marker, but you really don't need it. It's the one that looks like this: 万, and is in silver, while the other numbers are in gold.

Example. BM's score is:
1,391,377 Stage 4, max chain of 1914

EDIT: I'm slow.

Gonna throw this out there, as this is just a good a place as any. Can someone confirm the differences in characters? From what I know:

Gensuke: Strongest Shikigami
Shishin: The bizarre range
Kosame: Uh... stronger shot?

Speeds all seem to be the same. I've not paid attention to Shikigami speed, which might be an issue.

Gensuke - strong semi-piercing Shot, slowest speed Shikigami with large clustered bombs, average movement speed

Shishin - variable sweeping Shot, average speed Shikigami with small clustered bombs, slowest movement speed

Kosame - weakest narrow rapid Shot, fastest Shikigami with small forward trail bombs, fastest movement speed

The difference in movement speed for both character and Shikigami isn't too great, but it is noticeable if you are used to a particular character and then make the switch. The majority of players use Kosame for her movement and Shiki speed, and her Shot is weak, allowing prolonged milking. Shishin holds a chain better due to the variable Shot movement which can catch more enemies in one sweep, while Gensuke can obliterate enemies and bosses.

I think all Shikigami strengths are the same. If not, then it would probably go in the order from weakest to strongest: Kosame, Gensuke, Shishin.

I blow through the bad guys w/ Gensuke. I always attributed it to the shikigami... I guess it could've been the shot, but doesn't seem to make sense as I don't do a lot of milking.

If you can't read your score, simply post a snapshot. But reading the kanji isn't as difficult as it seems at first. Actually you just have to learn the numbers 1-9. The kanji for the 10'000 mark is there by default.

And one more place to see the kanjis for the numbers: Numerical Kanjis :P

@Icarus:
If you guys want to, I can also add the chain counter. :)

Javel - Team Sweden - 6,257,523 - Stage 6 - Chain: 6,210 - Shishin

Last Boss. Final pattern. Those damn balls will go straight at you and hit you and there´s not a thing you can do about it. :? I´ve yet to get through that pattern on my _2nd_ credit.

My least favourite Cave game. Anyways, I have absolutely no time to play this week, maybe I can squeeze in some time with it on Sunday. Hopefully my team mates will do better.

Starting to find my old rhythm again, thankfully.

Icarus - namakoteam - 8,490,157 - Stage 5 - Kosame - 11,739 - [WolfMAME]

Image

Chainbreak at the stage4 worm, mistiming the link. Flapped through the rest of the game, ending the run at the stage5 boss, first form.
This is my name in hiragana again, for reference.
いかるす = i-ka-ru-su

Replay verified.

Wow, I'm so fucking comically bad at this since I've last played.

I'm not sure if I'm going to have an entry this week, being the final week of midterms and whatnot.

Yeah, this is hard in a way that lessens the fun. There's no way I will clear that in a week. How did DOJ (1st round even) ever get a reputation for being really hard.

If you have trouble reading your score and are using MAME, you can set a watchpoint at $2024A4 to retrieve in arabic numerals. This value persists after a game over until a new game is started, so turning it on after your game is over is fine. Score is stored as an 8-digit BCD value (hence, 32 bits).

Here is the set-up in the MAME cheat dialog:

I've finished Guwange and can only get to 1-4 on DOJ on a lucky day. Haha.

Then again, I logged way more time on Guwange because I thought it was actually fun.

You have to read it from the top to the bottom. And only the yellow kanjis do matter. So for that snapshot it would be:

Score: 1'139'012
Max Chain: 1138

Edge - Team Germany - 1'139'012 - Gensuke - 4 - 1138

EDIT:
Oh, you figured it out already. I think you misplaced the 6s on your post are actually 7s. :)

Ah. Gotcha. Thanks for the assist.

Edge- What are the rest of the areas? I know where your initials go, but what do the rest of the sections on your score mean? I'm guessing the top center is the name of your character, but what about the top right and bottom right areas?

It's not as bad as it looks. I broke this out, played it for like a week (maybe a bit more) after not having touched it in years and got a 1CC. It's very doable. I sucked ass at it when I first put it away... made it to stage 4, maybe.

I had to use my bombs quite liberally on stage 6 though. The key is to find the food items.... the one on stage 6 is like an extra credit!

Top center is the stage you reached, not the name of the character. Top right is the ranking (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) on the hi score chart, under that is the name you entered followed by the suffix '-dono' (honorific name suffix somewhat analogous to "Mr./Miss"), under that it says "ikkin", and I'm not sure what that's for. Means "one gold" literally. Might refer to you getting the score on one credit? The "gold" here could be referring to the coins you pop in the cab to play a credit.

Here's a layout chart:

Image

Everything is read from top to bottom.

You can always tell which character was used by the silhouette in the background of the score display. Blue for Shishin, Red for Kosame, and Yellow/Orange for Gensuke.
